Chapter 46: A Message
"You’re back," Lea said the moment he walked into the apartment.
"Hmm," Liam nodded as he placed a hand on her head, "sorry for making you worry."
Lea also nodded as she enjoyed the head pat for a while before asking, "So, what was that about?"
Liam considered telling her about the USB; after all, it was still a message from their parents.
But there was still the fact that whatever might be on the drive would cause them worry, especially since there was a chance they’d discover that their parents’ deaths had been anything but an accident.
So he came to a decision.
"It was just Mom and Dad’s coworker," he said with a smile, "he wanted to know if we were doing fine."
Again, Lea found that hard to believe, but if he was hiding the true reason, then it meant he didn’t want them to worry.
"I see," she muttered before turning to the kitchen and asking, "Hungry?"
"Very," Liam responded with a smile.
Watching whatever was on the drive would have to wait; for now, it was time to have a meal with his family.
While Lea moved to the kitchen, Liam headed towards the living room where Eli currently was.
He silently sat by the kid who was completely absorbed in what was currently playing on the TV.
"Whatcha watching, buddy?" Liam asked after a while, and only then did Eli notice his presence.
"Big brother," he said before turning back to the TV and replying, "It’s Mecha Hero."
"Is that so?" Liam muttered as he also focused on the show playing.
It seemed to be an anime about people who piloted giant robots, and from what he understood so far... the main character could create said giant robots.
It was pretty interesting.
Liam wondered if [Genesis] could allow him to create something such as that.
Well, he was certain that he could, but he first needed to have enough knowledge of mechanical engineering to actually pull it off.
Unfortunately, aside from looking cool, it wouldn’t be useful in his contracts... except he had to take down some type of Kaiju.
Still, knowledge on that wouldn’t hurt, and as stated before, it would look hella cool.
Speaking of which, Liam turned to his younger brother.
"You were into robotics, right?" he asked.
"Hmm," Eli nodded with his eyes still stuck on the screen, "I want to build a mecha like that, someday."
"Is that so?" Liam ruffled his hair with a smile, "Then big brother will be cheering you on until then."

A couple of hours later, Liam found himself in his room since he had spent enough time with his siblings.
He ensured that the door was properly locked before he sat on the bed, took out a laptop and without hesitation, he connected the USB drive.
He calmly waited for it to read, and the moment it did, he was prompted to input a password.
Liam silently looked at the keyboard for a while; there were no clues or anything for what the password was, which meant it was something the old Liam knew.
The hitman scanned through his memories, specifically memories about the old Liam and his parents.
After a moment with his eyes closed, he suddenly opened them and typed in, "Firefly."
It was a nickname that his mom gave him due to his energetic and almost restless personality while he was young.
It was a name only he and his parents knew, so that was his first guess.
And the fact that a folder soon opened meant that he had guessed correctly.
Inside the folder was a video file titled: For our little bugs.
And below the video file were two other folders, but these seemed to also be password-protected.
Curious, he opened the video file first and expanded it to full screen.
The first thing he noticed was a shaky recording, but that soon stabilized, revealing a man in a long white lab coat.
He had black hair and eyes.
Even without the old Liam’s memories, he would immediately recognize the man...or at least, he’d know who the man was.
David Bennett.
In other words, the father of the three.
Liam was a spitting image of David; the only difference, aside from the fact that David was older, was the fact that he had on glasses.
"There we go," David said as he steadied the camera and stepped back, "that should do it."
He then turned to someone who was out of the frame and asked, "You ready, honey?"
"Give me a sec," the voice of a woman could be heard off-camera.
A couple of seconds later, she stepped into frame and Liam immediately froze involuntarily.
She had a head full of short white hair and crystal, strange silver eyes identical to Liam’s.
Like David, she had on a white lab coat and on her face was a small smile.
She was undeniably Catherine Bennett, David’s wife and the mother of the three kids.
Her smile got warmer as she looked directly into the camera and said, "Hello, my little Firefly....and our cute little bugs."
"H-huh?" Liam let out a gasp as he felt a warm liquid streaming down his cheeks.
"Am I...." He lifted his hand and touched it before adding, "crying?"
He wiped his tears away with the back of his hand, a bit confused at the reaction.
It seems his emotions were acting up again just as they had during the incident at his siblings’ school.
’The memories are not even mine, so why does it feel like —’
His thoughts were interrupted when Catherine spoke again.
"If you’re watching this," she said, her voice sounding as warm as the one in his memories, "then Thomas did what we asked of him, and that means we’re not there to tell you this ourselves."
"We’re sorry," Catherine said earnestly, "for not being there for you three."
David wrapped a hand around her shoulder before he also spoke up, "but if you’re watching this, then that means you need to understand what we did."
"At least, some of it."
