Chapter 432: The Retired Young Mercenary is in Official Uniform!!
Pearl Villa.
Morning had not even properly begun.
The sky outside was still dark, carrying only the faintest hint of blue near the horizon.
Inside the bedroom, Miles closed the final compartment of his travel case.
Chloe walked out from the dressing area, tying her hair.
"Did you pack the uniform?"
Miles looked toward the bag.
"Done."
Then his eyes moved toward the second suitcase beside her.
He frowned.
"Is that your bag?"
Chloe looked innocent.
"Yes."
"We’re coming back in the morning."
"Hehe."
Miles stared.
Chloe finally opened the suitcase slightly.
"It has Hope and Asher’s clothes too."
Miles immediately understood.
"Oh."
"That makes sense."
Before Chloe could reply...
Footsteps came rushing down the hallway.
The door opened.
"Big Bro!"
Asher appeared.
Already dressed.
Far too energetic for the time.
"Let’s go."
Miles smiled.
"Everyone ready?"
"Yes!"
Asher nodded proudly.
"Mama."
"Dad."
"Grandpa."
"Hope is almost sleeping while standing."
Chloe laughed.
Miles picked up the bag.
"Then let’s go."
...
The entire family had gathered in the living room.
Daniel.
Elena.
Timothy.
Hope and Asher.
Chloe.
Miles.
Only Monica was staying behind.
She had refused to come.
According to her...
Having the Reaper Group’s most recognizable public face accompanying Miles into an already sensitive military ceremony would attract unnecessary attention.
Monica stood near the entrance with her tablet in hand.
"Good luck, Boss."
Miles sighed.
"You make it sound like I’m going into battle."
Monica smiled.
"I’ll be watching from here."
Miles looked toward her.
"Jet ready?"
"Yes."
She nodded.
"Fuel checked."
"Crew ready."
"Security team already reached Citadel."
Miles became more attentive.
"They’ll cover all the blind spots between the airforce base and Sterling Estate."
"No one follows the family."
"No one gets close without us knowing."
Miles nodded.
"Great."
Chloe looked toward Monica.
Then toward Miles.
"Sister Monica..."
"Hmm?"
"I feel less like a General’s wife and more like the President’s wife."
Monica laughed.
"That actually makes sense."
Then she looked toward Miles.
"If the President personally wants to give him a medal..."
She smiled.
"...either he is very proud of your husband or very afraid of him."
Miles looked offended.
"Why does everyone say that?"
Timothy chuckled.
"People forget this country was once ruled by the Sterlings."
Chloe immediately looked toward him.
"Oh."
"Right."
She smiled.
"Royal family."
Then another thought came.
"Wait."
Everyone looked toward her.
"Where are we staying in the Citadel again?"
Miles slowly turned toward Timothy.
A smile appeared.
"The prince who left the palace..."
Timothy immediately knew what he meant.
Miles continued,
"...finally gets to see his palace again after decades."
For a moment...
The room became quieter.
Citadel wasn’t just another city for Timothy.
It was home.
The city where he had grown up.
Where the old Sterling family once stood at the center of Haven’s history.
Where he had spent his youth before business, tragedy and years of silence separated him from everything.
Timothy smiled faintly.
"Is that old place still the same?"
Miles shrugged.
"You’ll find out."
Elena smiled.
"Let’s go."
She picked up her handbag.
"I spoke to sister Birdie."
"They’re already waiting for us."
Daniel nodded.
"Then we shouldn’t keep anyone waiting."
Hope yawned loudly.
Her head almost fell against Elena’s arm.
Miles smiled.
Then looked toward Asher.
"Asher."
The little boy immediately stood straight.
"Yes, Captain."
Miles pointed toward Hope.
"We’re going outside."
"Military base."
"New city."
"Lots of people."
He became mock-serious.
"Make sure you don’t leave your sister alone anywhere."
Asher saluted dramatically.
"Roger that."
Then he grabbed Hope’s hand.
"I’ll be her shadow."
Hope barely opened her eyes.
"I don’t need a shadow."
"You do."
Asher started pulling her gently toward the door.
"Let’s go."
Elena laughed.
And the family left Pearl Villa.
...
A convoy moved through Star Harbor before sunrise.
The city was unusually quiet.
Most shops were closed.
Traffic was light.
Only the occasional early worker or delivery vehicle passed beneath the streetlights.
Chloe leaned against Miles inside the car.
Hope had already fallen asleep again.
Asher, somehow, was still awake.
Timothy looked through the window.
The vehicles eventually entered a secured airbase.
Miles’ private jet was waiting.
The family boarded quickly.
By the time the runway lights began disappearing beneath them...
The eastern sky was finally turning orange.
...
The private jet climbed smoothly.
Star Harbor shrank beneath the clouds.
Asher had lasted less than ten minutes before asking the question everyone expected.
"Big Bro."
Miles looked away from his tablet.
"Yes?"
"Can I remove the seat belt?"
"The seat belt sign is off."
Asher immediately unbuckled.
Miles raised an eyebrow.
"But where exactly are you planning to go?"
Asher looked around the cabin.
"I want to explore."
Miles laughed.
"Explore the jet?"
"Yes."
"I’ve never seen a plane like this."
Hope opened one sleepy eye.
"It’s Big Bro’s plane."
Asher immediately turned.
"Really?"
Miles nodded.
"Yess."
Asher walked closer.
Then another question arrived.
"Big Bro..."
"Hmm?"
"Do you know how to fly a plane?"
Miles smiled.
Even Chloe, who had been leaning comfortably against the seat, opened her eyes.
She looked interested.
Miles folded his arms.
"There isn’t much in this world your big brother can’t drive or pilot."
Asher’s eyes widened.
"Really?"
"Really."
"A ship?"
"Yes."
"A real ship?"
"Yes."
Asher became even more excited.
"A train?"
Miles nodded.
"Yes."
Asher stared at him like he had just discovered a superhero.
"When I grow up..."
He pointed toward Miles.
"I want to become like you."
Timothy laughed softly.
"Then you’ll have to work hard."
Asher immediately nodded.
"I will."
Daniel looked toward him.
"You’ll need to wake up with your brother every morning."
Asher’s confidence remained.
Then Daniel continued,
"And exercise like him."
Asher’s face slowly changed.
Elena immediately laughed.
"Don’t demotivate him before he starts."
Everyone laughed.
Asher looked toward Miles.
"How early?"
Miles smiled.
"Very."
Asher silently walked away.
Hope giggled from her seat.
...
The flight became peaceful after that.
Chloe eventually fell asleep.
Completely.
Her head rested against Miles’ shoulder, her hands loosely folded in her lap.
Miles barely moved for almost an hour so he wouldn’t wake her.
Asher wandered through the cabin under Daniel’s supervision.
Hope drew something on a tablet.
Elena spoke quietly with Daniel.
Timothy simply enjoyed watching all of them.
Miles eventually looked toward his grandfather.
"You feeling alright?"
Timothy turned.
"Any discomfort?"
"No."
Miles studied him carefully.
𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"Fatigue?"
Timothy smiled.
"This..."
He looked around the cabin.
"...takes all my fatigue away."
Miles’ expression softened.
Timothy continued,
"It’s been a very long time since I’ve gone anywhere with family."
He looked toward Chloe sleeping against Miles.
Then Hope and Asher.
Daniel.
Elena.
His smile deepened.
"And now my grandson is traveling to receive a medal from the President."
Timothy looked at Miles.
"I couldn’t be more proud."
Miles lowered his eyes slightly.
Daniel smiled from across the cabin.
"We all are."
Miles looked around.
Then smiled.
"Thanks."
...
Breakfast was served during the flight.
Hope and Asher immediately became fully awake again.
Chloe also woke the moment food arrived, which Miles quietly found suspicious.
A few hours later...
The pilot announced their descent.
Citadel appeared below.
The capital of Haven.
Government buildings.
Military facilities.
Wide ceremonial avenues.
Older districts carrying remnants of the country’s long history.
And farther away...
Parts of the city Timothy remembered from another lifetime.
The jet descended toward Citadel Air Force Base.
Miles looked toward his family.
"Everyone ready?"
Chloe adjusted her clothes.
Elena immediately looked toward the twins.
"Hope."
"Asher."
Both looked at her.
"This is a military facility."
"You behave."
Hope nodded seriously.
"Understood, Mom."
Then she grabbed Asher’s hand.
"I’ll hold him."
Asher stared.
"I was supposed to protect you."
Hope looked toward him.
"You wander more."
Chloe laughed.
The aircraft touched down.
...
The stairs were positioned moments later.
Miles stood near the door.
He looked back once.
His family was behind him.
Then the door opened.
Bright Citadel morning light entered the cabin.
Miles stepped outside first.
Wind moved lightly across the runway.
He descended.
One step.
Another.
Behind him came Chloe.
Then Elena and Daniel.
Timothy.
Hope and Asher.
At the bottom of the stairs...
Several high-ranking officers were waiting.
The moment Miles’ shoes touched the ground...
They straightened.
Then saluted.
Miles stopped.
For Chloe...
For Elena...
For Daniel...
Even for Timothy...
That single moment meant more than they expected.
They all knew who Miles was.
They don’t know pieces of what he had done.
But they have seen his scars.
But this was different.
Uniformed officers standing beneath the Haven flag...
Saluting him openly.
Miles Sterling.
Chloe’s smile appeared almost instinctively.
Elena’s eyes became slightly wet.
Daniel stood a little straighter.
Timothy watched silently.
Pride visible on his face.
Asher whispered,
"Woah."
Hope squeezed his hand.
The officer standing at the center stepped forward.
He was older.
Broad-shouldered.
Decorations covered part of his uniform.
Even civilians throughout Haven knew his name.
General Everett Sloane.
Chief of Staff of the Haven Air Force.
One of the most decorated officers still in active service.
Miles smiled.
"We meet again, General."
Sloane extended his hand.
Miles accepted it.
"Welcome to Citadel, General Sterling."
Miles chuckled faintly at the title.
Sloane looked toward the family.
Then respectfully greeted them one by one.
"Thank you for coming."
He looked toward Timothy.
"It’s an honor to finally meet you, Mr. Sterling."
Timothy shook his hand.
"Nice to meet you, General."
Sloane smiled.
Then looked toward everyone.
"Please follow me."
"The President will arrive in approximately two hours."
Miles nodded.
"Alright."
"Until then..."
Sloane continued,
"You’ve been provided private quarters inside the officers’ wing."
"Rest."
"Change."
"Prepare for the ceremony."
Then he added,
"President Maxwell and Vice President Horrow will join your family for lunch afterward."
Miles’ eyes barely changed at the name.
Vivienne Horrow.
But he gave nothing away.
"Thank you, General Sloane."
"My pleasure."
Sloane turned.
The entire group began moving toward the secure building.
...
Everett Sloane was one of the few people in the Air Force who knew exactly who Miles had once been.
Not from rumors.
Not from incomplete military files.
Personally.
Years ago...
During Miles’ mercenary days...
Their paths had crossed more than once.
Sloane had watched a teenager walk into situations experienced soldiers avoided.
A boy without rank.
Without uniform.
Without official authority.
Yet enemy forces learned his name faster than they learned the names of generals.
Sloane had always thought the same thing about Ghost.
Too young.
Too fearless.
And far too comfortable with death.
But he respected him.
That respect had never disappeared.
Most members of the Haven Army had at least heard stories.
Especially soldiers connected with the Northern Frontier and the Seventeenth Battalion.
Rumors of Ghost existed there like old campfire stories.
The Air Force was different.
Very few had ever connected those stories with Miles Sterling.
That was one reason President Maxwell had selected this base for the ceremony.
Fewer familiar eyes.
Less curiosity.
Less chance of someone digging into a past Miles had deliberately left behind.
And Everett Sloane knew better than most...
Some histories were better left where they belonged.
...
Two hours later.
The family gathered inside their assigned private lounge.
Everyone had changed.
The twins were unusually well behaved now.
Hope sat beside Elena.
Asher kept looking toward the door.
Then...
It opened.
Miles walked out.
For several seconds...
Nobody said anything.
The General’s uniform fit him perfectly.
Dark ceremonial fabric.
Polished buttons.
Formal insignia.
General officer markings.
His posture made it look natural, even though it was the first time he had ever truly worn such a uniform for a ceremony.
Timothy slowly stood.
He stared at Miles.
Then laughed softly.
"I feel like saluting you."
Miles smiled.
"Grandpa."
"I’m serious."
Timothy walked closer.
His eyes moved across the uniform.
Then to Miles’ face.
"I’m very proud."
Miles’ smile softened.
"Thank you."
Elena stood.
For a few seconds, she didn’t speak.
She just looked at him.
Her son.
The boy she once thought she had lost forever.
Now standing before her in the uniform of a General.
Pride shone openly in her eyes.
"You look wonderful."
Miles smiled.
"Mom."
Daniel walked over.
"You look great, son."
"Thanks, Father."
Hope jumped up.
"Big Bro!"
Asher joined her.
"You look awesome!"
Miles laughed.
"Thank you both."
Asher looked at the insignia.
"Can I touch it?"
"Later."
Asher nodded seriously.
"Okay."
Chloe stood a little behind everyone.
She didn’t say anything.
Miles noticed.
He looked toward her.
Chloe simply smiled.
The same smile she had while taking his pictures that morning.
Miles understood.
Then footsteps approached.
Sloane entered.
He stopped the moment he saw Miles.
His eyebrows rose.
"Woah."
Miles laughed.
Sloane slowly walked closer.
"First time in uniform..."
He looked him over.
"...and you already carry the aura."
Miles sighed.
"Don’t start."
Sloane ignored him.
He looked toward Elena and Daniel.
Then back at Miles.
"I never thought I’d live long enough to see this."
Miles raised an eyebrow.
"See what?"
"The young boy who carried no rank..."
Sloane smiled faintly.
"...yet made enemies afraid just by hearing his name."
The room became quieter.
Sloane continued,
"Now wearing the uniform of this country."
His expression became genuinely proud.
"No one deserves it more."
Miles looked at him for a second.
Then smiled.
"All emotional as ever, General."
Sloane laughed.
"Still disrespectful as ever."
Timothy chuckled.
Sloane looked toward the clock.
"Come."
"They’re about to arrive."
...
The ceremony hall stood inside one of the oldest administrative buildings within the airbase.
It wasn’t enormous.
President Maxwell had deliberately kept the event private.
No press.
No public audience.
No rows of cameras.
No crowds of politicians seeking photographs.
But the hall carried a quiet dignity.
Tall Haven flags stood along both sides of the room.
At the center of the far wall hung the national emblem, polished beneath warm ceremonial lighting.
A deep navy carpet ran from the entrance toward a raised platform.
Behind the platform stood three flags.
The Republic of Haven.
The Presidential Standard.
And the flag of the Haven Armed Forces.
Rows of dark wooden chairs had been arranged neatly on either side of the central aisle.
Only a limited number of guests were present.
Senior officers of Army , Navy and airforce.
A few members of the President’s staff.
High-ranking Air Force personnel.
Several senior military officials.
No one unnecessary.
No one with a camera in hand.
A military honor guard stood near the platform in perfectly pressed uniforms.
A small table beside them held a velvet case.
Closed.
Miles looked at it only once.
He already knew what was inside.
The medal.
The room became noticeably quieter when Miles entered.
Several officers stood.
Some saluted.
Others simply watched.
Curiosity.
Respect.
Recognition.
A only had heard the stories.
Others only knew the public version.
A twenty-three-year-old businessman.
Honorary General.
National hero.
Miles walked down the aisle with his family behind him.
Chloe stayed beside Him.
Hope and Asher were between Daniel and Elena.
Then Timothy
Asher’s eyes moved everywhere.
The uniforms.
Everything fascinated him.
Hope quietly whispered,
"Don’t stare."
Asher whispered back,
"I’m observing."
Timothy heard them.
He smiled.
Near the front, Sloane guided the family toward reserved seats.
Miles remained standing beside him.
He looked around the hall observing as always.
Sloane glanced toward the entrance.
Then quietly said,
"They’re here."
The doors at the far end opened.
Every conversation stopped.
The honor guard straightened.
The officers rose.
Miles looked toward the entrance.
President Maxwell Abbott had arrived.
And beside him...
Vice President Vivienne Horrow.
