Chapter 764 - 713: Either a Big Shot or Trouble! (1)
「About half an hour later.」
Several Land Cruisers, escorting a Bentley, sped to the outskirts of the Great Wall’s restricted area.
Unlike other vehicles that had to park before their occupants walked in, the domineering motorcade ignored the ’No Entry’ signs and sped right through the gate.
"Damn! Did they not see the ’No Entry’ sign? In Beijing, where luxury cars are everywhere, are they really trying to act tough in a Bentley? Fucking hell, watch me deal with them!"
From a distance, a young hothead in charge of security, dressed in his uniform, cursed as he sprang up from the guardhouse upon seeing the Land Cruisers and the protected Bentley drive in.
He had encountered this sort of thing many times. He had scolded and turned away people driving sports cars, Mercedes-Benzes, and even a Rolls-Royce once. It was clear he had grown accustomed to this feeling of superiority.
Although his official title was just a non-contractual security officer for the Great Wall, the power backing them was strong enough that they could arrogantly reprimand even tycoons. The reason was simple. The security of the Great Wall was handled by the forces of Lord Shan, a dominant figure in Beijing’s Underworld!
Thus, it wasn’t unheard of for people to try and trespass just because they drove a luxury car, but their outcomes were seldom good.
"Damn it, get back here! Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Seeing the young hothead about to rush out, a middle-aged man in the guardhouse shouted in a panic.
"What do you mean by that, Old Li? This is our duty!" The young hothead stopped, his face a mask of confusion.
"Do you know who’s in those cars? Take a good look at the license plates!" the middle-aged man scolded, pulling the young hothead back.
Hearing this, the young man finally took a proper look at the vehicles’ license plates.
"66661!"
"66662!"
"66663!"
"66664!"
"66665!"
"66666!"
As he read out the license plate numbers, he froze, completely dumbstruck.
"Old Li, who... who is that?" the young man’s voice trembled as he spoke, still in a daze.
In Beijing, one’s status wasn’t measured by the luxury car they drove, but by their license plate number. A plate like that said more than enough.
"Lord Shan!" Old Li’s eyes were fixed on the parked Bentley. Even though he was in his forties, he couldn’t contain the fervent excitement that lit up his gaze.
"What? Lord Shan?"
Hearing the name, the young man’s legs went weak, and he nearly collapsed in shock.
Lord Shan was an idol to every single Great Wall security guard. He was also their ultimate boss.
No one who wore a Great Wall staff badge was unfamiliar with the name Lord Shan. In their inner circle, it was the name they discussed more than any other.
"That’s right. Those Land Cruisers are Lord Shan’s escort, and that Bentley with all the sixes is his personal car! I’ve seen it before! Didn’t you notice how the gate guards didn’t stop them? That’s because they knew it was Lord Shan’s convoy!" Old Li said, his gaze still radiating fervor.
"But Lord Shan... how could Lord Shan possibly come here? I’ve been here for over a year and I’ve never heard of him visiting this place!" The young hothead’s legs trembled as he stared through the guardhouse window at the parked motorcade, his breathing ragged.
"I’m not sure either. I can’t figure it out. In any case, either a massively important person has appeared on the Great Wall, or something major is about to happen here today," Old Li said gravely. Then, speaking more urgently, he added, "He’s coming, he’s coming! Lord Shan is getting out of the car! Keep your eyes peeled! A chance to see Lord Shan in person is rare!"
With that, Old Li hurried out of the guardhouse, watching from a distance as the Bentley’s rear door was pulled open.
At the Bentley’s rear door, several young men in black suits and sunglasses stood guard, their temples slightly bulging. They bowed respectfully, extended their hands, and said, "Lord Shan, please!"
Without a word, a stern-faced Chen Shan stepped out from the back seat.
He was dressed in a well-fitting Zhongshan suit that complemented his slightly graying hair. His resolute face was etched with the weathered lines of a man who had seen all walks of life.
He straightened the collar of his suit and said simply, "Let’s go."
"Yes, Lord Shan!" the dozen or so men, already in formation, responded in a thunderous voice.
They immediately formed a protective circle around Chen Shan and walked briskly toward the entrance to the Great Wall.
The young hothead’s gaze followed them, and only after their figures disappeared from sight as they ascended the Great Wall did he exclaim with fervent admiration, "So domineering... so damn domineering!"
HUMMMMM!
HUMMMMM!
Just as his exclamation died down, another motorcade arrived. An Audi A6L, several police cars with sirens blaring, and a stretch Lincoln all drove in one after another, each one ignoring the ’No Entry’ rule.
Seeing this, Old Li’s mouth fell wide open.
"An Audi with a City Government plate, police cars from the Municipal Bureau, and a stretch Lincoln with four eights! Have they all gone insane? What in the world is happening at the Great Wall today?" As he spoke, Old Li’s face was a mask of alarm.
Years of experience had already allowed him to smell a storm brewing.
The Municipal Bureau police cars were one thing. But a City Government Audi, a stretch Lincoln with four eights, and Lord Shan’s motorcade? This clearly wasn’t a sightseeing trip.
"Old Li, what’s going on? What—what—what is all this for?" No longer daring to mutter about chasing the cars away, the young hothead swallowed hard, his face a picture of shock.
"There’s trouble," Old Li said, his voice trembling as he watched figures get out of the cars and rush toward the Great Wall entrance.
"Old Li, should we go take a look? What do you think?"
The young hothead wasn’t thinking things through; he just knew that these were all major figures. In this situation, he truly didn’t want to miss the chance for a close encounter. After all, he was always talking about becoming a Great Wall security guard with ambition and ideals.
Throughout history, countless legendary figures had risen to prominence through a chance encounter. For him, it felt like that chance had finally arrived.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Old Li suddenly turned and snapped at him.
"Damn! Old Li, what do you mean?" the young hothead blustered, completely bewildered.
"If you don’t want to die, then stay put! Whether it’s some top-tier bigwig or a major incident up there, it’s not something we can get close to! Not unless you want to be stripped of that uniform and don’t mind getting into serious trouble! A man has to know his place. I know you have dreams and ambitions, but rushing in recklessly in a situation like this will only lead to a bad end! Trust me, I’m over forty years old; I’ve eaten more salt than you’ve eaten rice. Those people, including Lord Shan and his men... they all looked grim. Understand?" Old Li hissed, his eyelids twitching nervously.
"I... I understand. Thanks, Old Li," the young man stammered, his face pale.
He said nothing more, just staring blankly at the Great Wall, now teeming with powerful figures.
