Chapter 786 - 734: Promise Me, Don’t Mess Around! (3)
Just as Qin Fan left the Imperial Kitchen, three of the government’s highest-level teams simultaneously appeared in Four-nine City.
"What the hell is going on?"
"Even the special disciplinary squad under the direct command of the Forbidden City has been mobilized?"
"But everything’s been quiet! There wasn’t a single rumor!"
"They’re pulling the rug out from under someone without any warning! Who are they after? Have they gone mad?"
A convoy of Audis with special license plates drove into Four-nine City. Along the way, everyone from the younger generation to the wizened old-timers who had weathered countless storms could only gawk in disbelief.
In recent history, there had never been such a deployment without any forewarning. Were they here for a friendly chat or a banquet? Impossible. That left only one other possibility—one that no one could believe, let alone face.
Amid the crowd’s panicked focus, the convoys from the three systems quickly surrounded the Qi Family’s residence.
"The Qi Family?"
"This—!"
"No! It can’t be!"
"They’re actually making a move on the old Qi Family?"
"Are they insane?"
When they saw the convoys surrounding the Qi residence, the old-timers cried out in unison. This outcome was beyond anyone’s expectations. While Four-nine City had no ordinary residents, few families were on the same level as the Qis. Making a move against a family of this caliber required exhaustive discussion; it should have been impossible to keep it completely under wraps. Yet now, a storm had descended without any warning at all.
"Elder, I heard the Qi Family went to the Imperial Kitchen earlier. They didn’t go inside, just waited for Qin Fan to come out. Word is that the Qi boy, Qi Shijie, was seriously injured by Qin Fan! Then the Imperial Kitchen stepped in and sent the Qis away. Could this be the Imperial Kitchen’s doing?"
"Impossible! The Imperial Kitchen would never interfere in outside matters!"
"Should we make a few calls to get a read on the situation?"
"Do it."
Similar conversations buzzed throughout Four-nine City. Soon, the members of the Qi Family emerged one by one, their faces pale with horror. They climbed into the official cars without any resistance. Not even old Master Qi was spared.
The convoy had arrived quickly and departed just as fast. As the sound of the engines faded, Four-nine City returned to its superficial calm, but the Qi Family’s grand courtyard now stood desolate and empty.
「On the plane」
Qin Fan was unaware of the storm that had erupted back in Four-nine City. He was also unaware that in a corner of the city, a policewoman named Su Aiyu stood with a pale face, her body trembling as she listened to an old man’s scathing reproach.
Two hours later, Qin Fan walked out of the airport and hailed a taxi, heading back to Jinling University.
Inside the car, he dialed Jiang Yinuo’s number. It had been days since they had last seen each other, and he missed her terribly. Of course, it was not just his heart that missed her; his body did, too. Abstinence had been easy before I’d had a taste, but after breaking my fast, the craving became an addiction.
The call had just connected when Jiang Yinuo’s urgent voice burst through before Qin Fan could even speak. "Hello, Qin Fan—where are you?"
Instantly recognizing the frantic tone in her voice, Qin Fan’s face fell. Did something happen?
"Yinuo, what’s wrong?" he asked, an eyelid twitching involuntarily.
"Li Qiuzhe was stabbed seventeen times, and he’s still in critical condition! It’s all over the school, and the administration found out about his off-campus activities, so he’ll probably be expelled!" Jiang Yinuo’s voice was filled with panic. Although the matter did not concern her directly and she was not close to Li Qiuzhe, everyone at school knew about his friendship with Qin Fan. She was terrified he would do something foolish. If she thought she could hide it from him, she never would have said a word.
"Qin Fan, if there’s a problem, we can use the legal system! Please, don’t do anything reckless! I’m begging you!" Before Qin Fan could even respond, she rushed on, her voice trembling.
"Okay, I’ll listen to you. No reckless moves," Qin Fan said, his voice low and heavy. "I’m back in Jinling. I was planning on finding you at the university, but it looks like I need to go see Old Bro first."
An uncontrollable chill began to radiate from him, plunging the temperature inside the car into a deep freeze. Feeling the sudden cold, the driver shivered. Then, he glanced at the rearview mirror, saw the young man’s expression, and nearly swerved into a telephone pole in fright.
"Qin Fan, I’m coming with you! Where are you? I’ll meet you!" Jiang Yinuo insisted, deeply worried. She knew his temperament all too well.
"Why go to all that trouble? Just wait for your husband at school. I’ll be by your side in two hours, tops. Okay? Trust me," Qin Fan said, gently refusing.
"Promise me you won’t do anything reckless! Please!" Knowing his personality, Jiang Yinuo did not press further, biting her lip.
"I promise. No reckless moves. Now be good and wait for me. I have to go."
With that, he hung up on her uneasy reply.
"Sir... are we still going to the university?" the driver stammered, slowing the car. Forgetting the young man in the back was no older than his own son, his terror caused him to use the respectful address.
"No. Drive slowly for a moment; I need to make a call," Qin Fan said coolly.
As the driver nodded obsequiously, Qin Fan dialed Chang Yuanyi’s number.
"Master Qin!" Three seconds later, Chang Yuanyi’s panicked, trembling voice came through the phone.
"Which hospital is Old Bro in?" Qin Fan asked, cutting straight to the point. His voice was devoid of accusation, but the sheer coldness in those few words made Chang Yuanyi tremble uncontrollably on the other end of the line.
"Master Qin, Jinling Military General Hospital! He’s in the isolated ICU on the twenty-third floor! Master Qin, I’m so sorry, I—"
Qin Fan cut him off. Having learned the address, he hung up and barked at the driver, "Jinling Military General Hospital!"
"Y-yes, sir!"
"Fast!"
"Right, right, right!"
The driver knew that look in his passenger’s eyes would haunt his nightmares. Faced with Qin Fan’s commands, he could only obey, not daring to speak or even glance in the rearview mirror again.
His foot slammed down on the accelerator, and the speedometer’s needle climbed steadily. Though Qin Fan said nothing more, the driver did not even have the courage to wait for red lights, blowing through seven or eight of them to race to the military hospital.
The moment the driver hit the brakes, Qin Fan tossed a thick wad of cash—at least ten thousand yuan—onto the passenger seat. He ran all those red lights for me. Life isn’t easy, and I have no habit of bullying ordinary people. This is just compensation. Without another word, he pushed open the car door and strode out.
The chill emanating from him was so intense that not even the scorching sun could dispel it. Inside the hospital, everyone—medical staff and visitors alike—instinctively shrank away from him, giving him a wide berth. As he stepped into an elevator, no one dared to follow.
