Chapter 693 - 649: How Could It Be Him? (3)_2
Ye Jizu grunted in acknowledgment and then hung up.
"What’s wrong?" Ye Congjun asked, his brow furrowed.
"Elder Ye, I didn’t get a chance to tell you earlier, but there was a small incident when we went to pick up Mr. Qin. A sniper launched an assassination attempt on Mr. Qin right outside the airport! My men have already identified the mastermind, and I’ve ordered him to come here and report in person, in front of Mr. Qin," Ye Jizu explained hurriedly.
"What?" Ye Congjun exclaimed, his eyes widening in shock.
"Yes, it happened just as Mr. Qin was walking out of the airport to meet us! The shot came from the rooftop of an industrial building, a sniping distance of nearly two thousand meters! But he didn’t succeed. Mr. Qin reflected the bullet right back at him, hitting him squarely between the eyebrows and killing him instantly. My men investigated his background; he was a notorious mercenary. What puzzles me is that someone like him should have been monitored the moment he entered the country. How did he manage to carry out his plan so smoothly? My people found that he returned openly on a commercial flight!"
Facing Ye Congjun’s shocked and angry outcry, Ye Jizu continued in a grave voice.
However, upon hearing this, Ye Congjun’s expression of shock and anger froze for a moment before turning deeply serious. From Ye Jizu’s words, he seemed to sense that something was wrong, and he sank into silence.
But if he could sense that something was amiss, how could Qin Fan fail to detect the strangeness of the situation? After all, being an old monster who had lived for hundreds of years, he would have died countless times already if he couldn’t even see the telltale signs behind this incident.
"It’s simple. Certain people knew he was coming to kill me," Qin Fan answered with a smile, though a chill ran through his heart. Although the sanctions against me haven’t officially begun, if this is true, it’s certainly thought-provoking.
Ye Congjun could see the implication, and so could Qin Fan.
As soon as Qin Fan finished speaking, the side hall fell into a deep silence. Everyone, except for Qin Fan, had a frown on their face. The information that had just been revealed was undoubtedly a sensitive fuse. It all depended on how Qin Fan chose to see it.
"Alright, no need for all the long faces. This wasn’t aimed at you, so there’s no need to be so worked up," Qin Fan said, shaking his head and breaking the dead silence with a dismissive laugh.
"Mr. Qin, what are your thoughts?" Ye Jizu asked, looking at Qin Fan without waiting for Elder Ye to speak.
"What is there to think? Every debt has a debtor. If they want to hire an assassin to kill me, they should be prepared to die themselves. I don’t let my grudges last overnight," Qin Fan chuckled faintly, as if discussing something utterly trivial. And for him, it truly wasn’t a big deal.
Unable to contain his rage, Ye Congjun slammed his hand on the dining table. "Outrageous! To hire such an assassin, they clearly aren’t from the Third World. For someone not from the Third World to act so recklessly in Jiangzhou... they’re courting death! They’re courting death!"
To brazenly attempt an assassination on Qin Fan in the Ye Family’s territory, and during the Ye Family’s own airport reception, no less—this was a blatant disregard for the Ye Family’s authority. It was tantamount to grabbing the Ye Family by the face and slapping them.
"Mr. Qin, please let me handle this! For this to happen in Jiangzhou, during a reception I was personally leading, is a direct provocation against our Ye Family! So, will you let the Ye Family take care of this?" asked Ye Jizu, the undisputed underground king of Lingnan. For him, regardless of the unknown mastermind’s status, as long as they were a power within Huaxia, he would use this opportunity to prove to the world that the Lingnan Ye Family’s methods had not grown soft. Even if the culprit was overseas, it wouldn’t matter. The third son of the Ye Family had been rooted abroad for years; as long as the target wasn’t an untouchable family or individual, there was no one they couldn’t retaliate against.
"Let’s find out who’s behind this first," Qin Fan said with an amused smile, shaking his head.
Trying to deal with me this way? Utterly ignorant. Across the entire Third World, no one would attempt such a futile, doomed endeavor. If I, Qin Fan, could be dealt with so easily, how would I have survived to this day?
For the moment, Qin Fan couldn’t immediately think of any likely suspects. After all, in his long career of putting arrogant people in their place, he had offended countless individuals. He couldn’t even recall most of the so-called big shots he had thoroughly crushed.
With another laugh, he said, "Alright, the food is getting cold! Let’s eat and talk."
Though he was the guest, Qin Fan playfully took charge, steering the conversation away from the heavy topic. These days, his opponents had evolved to the level of werewolves, vampires, and possibly even figures from the Forbidden City. He had become too disdainful to care much about provocations from such fleas and ants.
At Qin Fan’s words, Ye Congjun’s mood shifted quickly. He laughed heartily and was the first to pick up his chopsticks. The conversation gradually drifted from heavy, sensitive subjects to lighthearted tales of their past experiences.
「Meanwhile.」
In a mansion somewhere in Jiangzhou, a young man sat restlessly in front of his computer, constantly refreshing his email inbox.
Hours had passed, but there was still no response.
As he watched the evening shadows lengthen outside his window, his unease grew stronger. The ashtray on his desk was overflowing with extinguished cigarettes, many of which had been snuffed out after only a few puffs.
