Chapter 34: The Arc Of The Coast
The southern port of Maras had remained unchanged for four centuries. It was a city built on salt-crusted timber, barnacle-laden stone piers, and the slow, agonizing cadence of human muscle. Ships arrived when the wind dictated; cargo was unloaded one sack of grain at a time on the sweaty backs of bonded dock laborers; and salt-cured fish rotted in damp cellars whenever an offshore gale trapped the fishing fleets inside the bay for a week too long.
To the merchant lords who ruled Maras from their whitewashed stone villas along the cliffside, this was simply the natural state of the sea. The ocean was an unpredictable, chaotic beast that yielded only to the fickle mercy of the tides and the protective wards woven by the Maritime Guild’s coastal mages.
Then came the rails.
In less than three months, the Calderholt track-laying brigades had cut through the coastal ridge, descending from the pine forests into the salt marshes like a silver spear. They didn’t build around the bogs; they drove sixty-foot creosote-treated timber pilings deep into the mud using steam-powered pile drivers that shook the sea gulls from the cliffs three miles away. They laid double-track steel rails over elevated stone viaducts, bypassing the ancient, muddy toll roads entirely.
By the time the first heavy freight locomotive, the Calderholt Mark IV, a ten-wheeled titan with dual high-pressure boilers, glided into the newly constructed rail yards above the harbor, the economic foundation of Maras had already shifted on its axis.
Elias stood on the edge of the newly constructed concrete quay, his dark wool coat buttoned against the biting ocean wind. Beside him, Lira sat atop a granite bollard, her emerald forehead crystal glowing with a soft, steady pulse that harmonized with the low, rhythmic thrum of the harbor’s new steam cranes.
The quay itself was an engineering marvel that made the old wooden piers look like children’s toys, built from reinforced concrete, a precise mixture of volcanic ash, crushed limestone, and iron rebar, it extended four hundred feet into the deep-water channel. A pair of three-ton capacity steam cranes rolled back and forth along tracks laid directly into the concrete deck, their steel booms swinging heavy crates of copper ingots and refined saltpeter from flatcars directly into the holds of waiting schooners in a fraction of the time it once took an entire crew of dock workers.
"The Merchant Guild of Maras submitted their third formal petition this morning," Marcus said, stepping up beside Elias with his inevitable leather ledger tucked under his arm. He adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, which were spotted with tiny flecks of sea spray. "They are demanding an immediate ceiling on our transport tariffs."
"On what grounds?" Elias asked, his eyes fixed on the horizon, where the sea met the hazy grey sky.
"They claim our freight rates are predatory," Marcus replied, a faint, dry smile touching his lips. "They say it is mathematically impossible for us to move forty tons of timber from the northern pine forests to the coast for six silver sovereigns when their horse-drawn wagons charge forty. They are accusing us of using forbidden alchemical transmutations to artificially lower our costs."
"It isn’t transmutation," Elias remarked smoothly. "It’s thermodynamic efficiency. A horse converts less than five percent of its grain intake into useful kinetic work. A high-pressure steam engine operating on a closed-loop condenser converts sixteen percent of its coal fuel into tractive force on an iron rail. The math doesn’t lie, Marcus. Tell the Merchant Guild that if they wish to compete with our tariffs, they are welcome to build their own rails."
"They don’t have the steel," Marcus noted. "Nor the foundries. Nor the mathematical models to calculate axle loads. Three of their largest shipping houses have already liquidated their horse teams and applied for credit accounts with our transit authority."
"Good," Elias said. "Then the transition is proceeding without friction."
A heavy, booming whistle echoed across the bay, cutting through the cry of the gulls and the crash of the surf.
Elias turned to see a low, sleek vessel rounding the granite headland that guarded the mouth of the bay. It was like no ship that had ever sailed the southern waters. It possessed no towering pine masts, no tangled web of hemp rigging, and no canvas sails snapping in the gale. Its hull was constructed entirely of riveted cold-rolled steel plates painted dark slate grey, sitting low and stable in the churning water.
From two short, thick funnels mounted midship, thin plumes of clean, light smoke rose into the sea air. A pair of massive iron paddle wheels enclosed in ventilated steel housings bit into the water on either side, driving the vessel forward at twelve knots against a stiff headwind and an ebbing tide.
It was the Iron Monarch, the world’s first iron-hulled, steam-driven oceanic survey vessel.
Jacob stood at the bow of the iron ship, leaning over the bulwark with a brass speaking trumpet in his hand. As the ship glided smoothly alongside the concrete quay, its iron paddle wheels reversed with a deep, mechanical groan, bringing the three-hundred-ton vessel to a complete standstill without a single sailor having to haul on a rope.
A heavy hemp hawser was tossed ashore, and a crewman on the quay wrapped it around a steel cleat. The gangplank slid out with a metallic crash.
Jacob descended the ramp in three broad strides, wiping a mixture of coal soot and salt spray from his bearded face with the back of his sleeve. He grinned, his dark eyes alive with the manic energy that always took hold of him when a machine performed exactly according to plan.
"She handles like a swan, Master Elias!" Jacob declared, slapping his calloused hand against the iron gunwale of the vessel. "Twice the speed of a three-masted caravel, and she doesn’t care whether the wind is coming from the north, the south, or straight down from the sky! We crossed the bay against the gale in two hours. The old sailing packets took fourteen!"
"And the boiler pressures?" Elias asked, stepping closer to inspect the riveted seams along the hull.
"Rock solid," Jacob reported. "The nickel-alloy steel plates in the firebox held up under two hundred pounds per square inch without a single leak. The triple-expansion engine design you sketched out at the laboratory cut coal consumption by thirty percent compared to the single-cylinder rail engines."
