Chapter 22: The Thunder On The Range

The makeshift shooting range sat tucked in a narrow, dead-end ravine half a mile behind the laboratory, shielded from the village by dense rock and thick stands of pine.

Elias stood beside a heavy wooden bench, checking the lock mechanism of the freshly finished matchlock wall-gun. The barrel was forty-eight inches of bored, high-density cast iron, fitted into a dark walnut stock hand-carved by the town’s woodworker. A simple serpentine lever held a glowing length of slow-match cord soaked in saltpeter, ready to drop into the flash pan.

Beside him, Jacob held three wooden crates containing lead balls, coarse black powder, and pre-cut oiled linen patches. Behind them, twenty of the strongest men from the village defense force stood in a tight line, holding their own newly finished barrels with an equal mix of pride and sheer terror.

"The mechanics are elementary," Elias said, his voice easily carrying across the quiet ravine. "You pour a pre-measured charger of coarse grain down the muzzle. You seat the lead ball wrapped in the patch using the wooden ramrod. You prime the pan with a pinch of fine meal powder, close the cover, and pull the match trigger."

He picked up a heavy iron charger, funneling the dark powder down the forty-eight-inch barrel with a sharp, practiced motion. He dropped the patch-wrapped lead sphere down the bore and drove it home with two firm strikes of the ramrod.

Elias lifted the heavy weapon, resting its iron bipod onto the notched wooden barricade. Fifty paces down the ravine stood three wooden targets: iron breastplates fitted over heavy oak beams, simulating the heavy armor worn by the capital’s Guild enforcers.

"Lira," Elias said softly. "Acoustic shield."

The white fox leaped onto the bench, her green forehead crystal pulsing with a soft emerald barrier around the shooters’ ears to mitigate the pressure wave.

Elias aimed, aligning the iron front sight with the center of the middle steel breastplate. He flipped the pan cover open, squeezed the lever, and brought the glowing slow-match down into the fine priming powder.

*HISS—BOOM!*

A blinding burst of white smoke and orange flame erupted from the muzzle with a deafening roar that shook the very loose gravel beneath their boots. A heavy, violent shockwave punched through the ravine, kicking up a cloud of dirt.

Fifty yards away, the middle wooden target collapsed backward into the dust.

When the thick, sulfurous white smoke drifted away, Jacob and the men rushed forward to inspect the target, letting out collective gasps.

The iron breastplate, forged from three-millimeter tempered steel meantime to deflect arrows and glancing blade strikes, had a clean, jagged three-quarter-inch hole punched directly through the chest. The heavy oak beam behind it was completely shattered, splintered into matchsticks by the sheer kinetic transfer of the lead ball.

Jacob turned back to Elias, his face pale, his hands shaking as he touched the shredded iron edges. "Master Elias... a knight in full plate wouldn’t even have time to scream."

"Steel deflects edge blades because a sword blow distributes force over time and area," Elias said, walking up to the destroyed target and touching the hot metal rim. "A lead ball traveling at nine hundred feet per second concentrates hundreds of foot-pounds of kinetic energy into a single point in a millisecond. Armor becomes a trap."

He turned back toward the twenty men standing on the line, his golden eyes cold, calculating, and unyielding.

"The Guild relies on fear, expensive magic, and heavy armor to keep the populace under control," Elias barked, his voice ringing like striking iron. "They believe you are unarmed peasants. Today, you learn how to load, aim, and fire in three-man rotating ranks. By the time they reach our ridge, every man here will be able to fire three rounds a minute."

He picked up a second charger, handing it to Jacob.

"Again," Elias ordered. "Until the movement is as natural as breathing."

For the next four hours, the ravine echoed with the continuous, rhythmic thunder of black powder. *Load, ram, prime, fire.* The men’s hands grew dark with carbon dust, their shoulders bruised from the recoil, but with every volley that tore through the steel targets, their fear withered away, replaced by a fierce, terrifying confidence.

As the sun reached its peak, a scout from the eastern watchtower came sprinting down the ravine trail, out of breath, his face slick with sweat.

"Master Elias!" the scout panted, dropping to one knee. "Dust on the horizon! The eastern road!"

Elias didn’t flinch. He carefully wiped a smudge of carbon from his cheek with the back of his gloved hand. "Numbers?"

"At least fifty horses," the scout reported, his voice trembling slightly. "Not just inspectors this time. They’re carrying heavy lances, steel shields, and two dark crimson supply wagons marked with the Inquisitorial crest. They’ll reach the outer gabion wall by sunset."

The men on the shooting range went dead silent, their eyes darting to Elias.

Elias looked down at the heavy matchlock resting on the bench, then at the twenty men standing behind him, their faces dark with powder and their eyes burning with absolute resolve.

"Twenty guns," Elias murmured, calculating the tactical geometry. "Fifty mounted inquisitors on a narrow approach road bordered by ditches. They’re expecting a terrified village pleading for mercy."

He turned on his heel, his black cloak flaring around his boots as Lira leaped seamlessly onto his shoulder.

"Move the muskets to the eastern wall," Elias commanded smoothly. "Load the grape-shot canisters into the two heavy pivot-guns on the flanks, we give Overseer Corin’s inquisitors their formal

welcome."
