Chapter 46: The Boiling Sea

The air over the port of Maras no longer tasted of salt and sea spray, it tasted of heavy sulfur, scalded copper, and wet stone.

When the Midnight Express screeched to a halt along the reinforced concrete deck of Pier Four, the sun was just breaking over the horizon not as a bright golden disk, but as a dull, angry crimson circle obscured by a towering wall of white water vapor that rose three thousand feet into the sky.

The harbor was a cauldron.

The shallow waters inside the granite breakwaters were churning in a violent, rolling boil. Enormous plumes of superheated steam billowed off the surface, condensing into a thick, scalding fog that coated the concrete quays, the iron cranes, and the brick warehouses in a continuous sheet of hot moisture.

Alongside Pier Four sat the Vanguard, the dark slate-grey ironclad battle-cruiser was strained against her thick steel mooring cables, her heavy hull vibrated as the boiling seawater battered her bottom plates, and white steam whistled continuously from her pressure-relief vents.

On her high armored bridge wing stood Admiral Vance, clutching a brass speaking trumpet. His crisp blue uniform coat was soaked with sweat and condensation, his face pale as he looked down at the boiling foam churning against the hull.

"Master Elias!" Vance bellowed down to the quay as Elias, Jacob, and Marcus stepped off the train platform. "The harbor channel is at one hundred and ninety-two degrees! The internal hull temperatures are climbing toward dangerous thresholds! If we don’t cast off within twenty minutes, the electrical insulation on the dynamo leads is going to melt!"

Elias didn’t waste time with formal greetings. He bounded up the iron gangplank in four broad strides, Lira perched securely on his leather shoulder pad, her emerald forehead crystal shining through the thick white fog like a signal lantern.

"Don’t cast off yet, Admiral," Elias commanded smoothly, stepping onto the bridge wing. "If you take her out into the deep channel with standard condenser loops, the sea water will overheat your steam turbines and lock the main drive shafts within two miles."

Jacob hauled a massive wooden crate up the gangplank behind them, dropping it onto the armored deck with a heavy metallic CRASH. Inside lay a dozen large, finned copper heat exchangers, high-pressure flexible steel hoses, and four newly cast centrifugal booster pumps driven by compact electric motors.

"We aren’t going to use the ocean water to cool our engines, Admiral," Elias explained, stepping to the bridge engine-telegraph. "We are going to reverse the thermodynamic cycle."

Vance blinked, wiping a mixture of sweat and hot condensation from his forehead. "Reverse it? Elias, a steam turbine requires a cold sink to condense the steam back into water! If the ocean is boiling, there is no cold sink!"

"There is a cold sink," Elias corrected, pointing up through the thick fog toward the clear, icy blue sky at twelve thousand feet, where the superheated air mass met the cold polar air streams descending from the northern mountains. "The atmosphere above us."

He turned to Jacob. "Jacob! Hook the secondary booster pumps directly to the Vanguard’s high-pressure steam lines. Route the turbine exhaust up through the deck-mounted copper heat exchangers and spray atomized fresh water across the fins using the high-pressure fire pumps."

Jacob grinned, his dark eyes lighting up as he grasped the mechanical logic. "Evaporative cooling! We’re using the wind slipstream and the evaporation of our own fresh water to drop the condenser return temperature to eighty degrees!"

"Get the deck crews moving," Elias ordered. "We have fifteen minutes before the atmospheric pressure differential over the Trench of Spire triggers the first hurricane-force squall."

For twelve intense minutes, the forward deck of the Vanguard was a whirlwind of disciplined industrial labor.

Calderholt mechanists and naval sailors worked side-by-side in the scalding steam. They bolted the finned copper heat exchangers directly to the superstructure, clamped the flexible steel hoses onto the main turbine exhaust bypasses, and wired the electric booster pumps into the ship’s central dynamo grid.

As the last flange was torqued down, a low, ominous roar echoed from the open sea.

Out past the harbor breakwater, the sky turned pitch black. A colossal wall of dark storm clouds, driven by the intense thermal updrafts rising from the boiling trench rolled toward the coast at sixty miles per hour. The wind shifted in an instant, howling through the steel gantries of the port with hurricane force, tearing the roofs off two timber grain silos along the waterfront.

"Boiler pressure holding at two hundred and eighty pounds per square inch!" Jacob called out from the lower engine room hatch, his voice echoing up the brass voice-pipe. "Evaporative cooling loops active! Turbine return temperature dropping to seventy-five degrees!"

Elias grabbed the brass handle of the engine telegraph, shoving it all the way forward to FULL AHEAD.

"Cast off all lines!" Elias commanded.

The heavy steel mooring cables were tripped from the quay bollards, the Vanguard’s twin submerged bronze propellers bit into the boiling, frothing ocean water, generating thousands of shaft horsepower.

The thirty-five-hundred-ton ironclad lurched forward, her sharp armored bow slicing through the boiling surf and driving straight out of the harbor into the churning, pitch-black maw of the incoming hurricane.

Ten miles offshore, the Sunken Gulf had ceased to resemble an ocean.

Enormous fifty-foot waves of steaming water crashed against the Vanguard’s eight-inch steel armor belt, sending white curtains of scalding spray soaring over the armored gun turrets. But inside the sealed, armored conning tower, the air was cool, pressurized, and illuminated by the soft green glow of Lira’s forehead crystal.

Elias stood before the central steering wheel, his golden eyes fixed on the three-dimensional thermal map Lira was projecting onto the forward view-slit glass.

Deep beneath the hull three thousand feet down in the pitch-black abyss of the Trench of Spire six massive structural signatures were radiating energy like submerged miniature suns.

"Target acquisition," Marcus called out from the secondary sensor station, his voice trembling as the ship pitched violently over a monster wave. "We are directly over the first geothermal anchor! Water temperature beneath our keel is two hundred and twenty degrees Fahrenheit, it’s under so much pressure it’s superheated liquid!"

"The thermal output from those anchors is driving the entire atmospheric hurricane," Elias analyzed, adjusting the helm to keep the ship’s bow pointed directly into the surging sea. "If we leave them active, the storm system will expand until it covers the entire southern coastline, destroying our ports and flooding the agricultural valleys with salt water."

Admiral Vance held onto the brass handrail tightly as another wave slammed into the hull. "How do we destroy something three thousand feet underwater, Elias? We don’t have depth charges capable of surviving those pressures, let alone the heat!"

"We don’t destroy them with high explosives, Admiral," Elias said smoothly.

He reached for a new control panel mounted beside the helm, a retrofitted control system linked directly to the ship’s primary electrical dynamos and a pair of heavy copper cables that ran down the length of the ship’s steel hull.

"Those geothermal anchors are drawing their power from the earth’s natural magnetotelluric currents," Elias explained, his voice calm and mathematically precise. "They are giant electromagnetic induction coils, using the planet’s own core energy to generate thermal resistance."

He looked at Lira, who barked softly and flared her emerald crystal to its absolute maximum intensity.

"We aren’t going to blow them up," Elias declared, pulling the heavy copper knife-switch on the console. "We are going to reverse their polarity. We are going to feed a twenty-thousand-volt high-frequency alternating pulse straight down through the sea water into their coil networks."

ZZZZZZZZZZZZT!

A blinding arc of violet electrical energy erupted from the Vanguard’s submerged steel keel, driving straight down through the boiling ocean column like a stroke of underwater lightning.

Three thousand feet below, the first geothermal anchor’s induction coils met the high-frequency pulse.

The inverse current disrupted the magnetic field sustaining the thermal resistance. Instead of radiating heat outward into the water, the massive anchor’s internal coils experienced instant, catastrophic short-circuiting. The localized electromagnetic field collapsed, drawing thousands of tons of superheated water inward into its hollow core.

BOOM!

A muted, deep-sea implosion echoed through the hull of the Vanguard.

On the surface, a giant three-hundred-foot plume of white steam and shattered basalt erupted from the ocean, collapsing back into the sea as a harmless ring of warm foam.

On the bridge view-slit, the red thermal icon representing the first anchor flickered and vanished.

"First anchor neutral!" Marcus shouted, his face lighting up with wild disbelief. "Water temperature in the sector is dropping twenty degrees per minute!"

Elias didn’t pause to celebrate. He swung the heavy iron steering wheel ten degrees to port, aligning the armored bow with the second thermal signature on the map.

"Five anchors remaining," Elias commanded, his golden eyes reflecting the flashing violet arcs of the ship’s induction grid. "Keep the turbines at maximum revolutions, Admiral, we are clearing this ocean before noon."
