Chapter 39: The Spark in the Dark (2)
A second later, the earth beneath the derrick let out a deafening, metallic SCREAM.
FHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!
A three-hundred-foot column of black, iridescent fluid erupted straight up through the center of the derrick, blasting the two-ton steel drill bit and three hundred feet of casing pipe into the air like paper straws.
The dark column hit the crown block at the top of the tower, shattering the heavy wooden platform into splintered kindling and raining thousands of gallons of thick, sulfur-scented crude oil down across the black glass basin.
It wasn’t a trickle or a seepage. It was a gusher, a violent, roaring geyser of liquid energy, driven by ancient natural gas trapped deep within the earth’s crust.
Marcus fell backward onto his hands and knees on the catwalk, staring up in absolute, terrified awe at the towering black column that was blocking out the desert sun. His linen hat and white shirt were instantly soaked in dark, oily droplets that smelled of sulfur, ancient sea life, and raw power.
"Gods above..." Marcus gasped, wiping his spectacles with an oily hand, only to smear the glass completely black. "It’s... it’s a monster..."
Elias stood at the edge of the platform, completely unbothered by the rain of black oil coating his canvas jacket. Lira perched on his shoulder, her emerald crystal shining like a beacon through the dark spray, her fur protected by an invisible, high-frequency kinetic boundary that deflected every drop of oil away from her skin.
Elias reached out his gloved hand, catching a thick stream of the warm, crude oil in his palm. He rubbed his fingers together, feeling the incredible viscosity, the slick smoothness, and the raw chemical density of the liquid.
"Not a monster, Marcus," Elias said, his voice calm, clear, and triumphant above the roar of the well. "Energy."
By nightfall, the gusher had been capped.
It had taken four hours of brutal, nerve-wracking labor. Jacob, Elias, and six trained mechanists had worked in pitch-black darkness, forbidding a single lantern or match within half a mile of the site due to the explosive natural gas venting from the hole.
Using a heavy cast-iron blowout preventer, a massive valve assembly Elias had designed three months prior, they had winched the fifty-ton steel cap over the roaring casing pipe, bolting it down with six-inch alloy steel studs until the violent fountain was finally contained.
Now, the desert was quiet again.
A large concrete storage sump, dug into the black glass near the rig, held forty thousand barrels of raw petroleum, a deep, dark lake reflecting the brilliant stars of the southern night sky.
Inside the field laboratory, a temporary iron structure powered by a small four-cylinder steam generator, the air was thick with the scent of hot metal and chemical reagents.
Elias sat at a long steel workbench, operating a newly built fractional distillation column. The apparatus consisted of a heavy copper boiler heated by a controlled electric resistance coil, connected to a six-foot vertical glass column filled with small ceramic rings, which drained into four separate collection flasks.
Beside him, Jacob sat on a wooden crate, nursing a bandaged hand where an iron wrench had slipped during the capping process. He watched intently as the dark crude oil inside the copper boiler began to bubble and vaporize.
"How does the column work, Master Elias?" Jacob asked, watching the vapors rise through the glass rings.
"Fractional boiling points," Elias explained smoothly, adjusting a small brass needle valve to regulate the electric heat. "Crude oil is not a single compound, Jacob. It is a mixture of dozens of different hydrocarbon chains, each with its own specific molecular weight and boiling temperature."
He pointed to the highest collection flask, where a clear, water-white liquid was condensed from the vapor that rose to the very top of the column.
"At eighty degrees Celsius, the lightest molecules vaporize," Elias said, tapping the clear flask. "Naphtha and high-octane gasoline. Highly volatile, extremely flammable, and packed with kinetic potential."
He moved his finger down to the second flask, where a light amber fluid was accumulating.
"At one hundred and fifty degrees, we collect kerosene, a clean, smokeless lamp fuel that will replace whale oil entirely."
He pointed to the third flask, which held a slightly heavier, straw-colored oil.
"At two hundred and fifty degrees, we get diesel fuel, heavy, dense, and self-igniting under high compression."
And finally, he touched the thick, dark residue remaining at the base of the copper boiler.
"And what’s left behind is mineral lubricant and heavy asphalt which we will use to pave smooth, waterproof roads between our cities."
Jacob stared at the four distinct liquids derived from the same dark sludge they had pulled out of the desert floor. "Four different fuels from one hole in the ground."
"Five," Elias corrected, pointing to a small glass tube venting from the top of the assembly into a rubber storage bladder. "Methane and propane gas. We will burn it to generate electricity right here at the field."
A soft chime sounded from the workbench radio receiver.
Elias picked up the copper headphone horn, holding it to his ear. The signal was originating from the high-frequency radio relay station atop the Aethel Mountains, eight hundred miles to the north.
"Field Control, this is Central Assembly Dispatch," the operator’s voice crackled through the static. "We have a priority message from the Northern Maritime Observation Post at Cape Frost."
Elias pulled a pencil from his pocket. "Go ahead, Dispatch."
"Observation Post reports... unflagged iron vessels spotted in the Arctic Drift," the crackling voice reported. "Not Xing design. The ships possess no funnels, no sails, and no visible propulsion mechanisms. They are glid-ing through the sea-ice at twenty knots... leaving a trail of blue frost on the water."
Jacob froze, his dark eyes narrowing as he looked up from his bandages. "Blue frost? No steam funnels?"
Elias didn’t hesitate. "Did the observation post attempt optical contact?"
"Post attempted telegraphic query via directional lamp," the operator replied, the static growing thicker as atmospheric interference built over the mountains. "No reply, but... the light from their hulls... it disrupted our copper wire signals within a ten-mile radius. The observer notes... the water around their hulls is freezing solid as they move..."
The signal sputtered, dissolved into a wall of white noise, and died completely.
Elias set the copper headphone horn back down on its rest. He turned to his slate tablet, drawing a sharp, straight line from the Arctic Circle down toward the northern industrial provinces.
"Endothermic field disruption," Elias murmured, his golden eyes narrowing with razor-sharp analytical focus. "They aren’t burning fuel to generate heat. They are absorbing heat from the environment to power a localized energy sink."
"Mages?" Jacob asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous rumble.
"Not mages," Elias said, stepping to the door of the laboratory and looking out at the dark lake of petroleum reflecting the stars. "Mages draw energy from ley-lines until the network collapses. This is systemic heat extraction on a industrial scale. Someone in the far north has figured out how to reverse the second law of thermodynamics."
Lira hopped onto Elias’s shoulder, her white fur bristling slightly as her emerald forehead crystal emitted a cool, sharp blue light matching the exact frequency of the signal interference reported from Cape Frost.
Elias picked up a sealed flask of the clear, refined gasoline from the distillation column, holding it up against the star-filled sky.
"Pack up the field testing gear, Jacob," Elias commanded, his voice filled with absolute, unshakeable authority. "We have the fuel now. It’s time to build the engines that will take us to the ice."
