Chapter 1243: Still Has Doubts
Not long after the second day of the tournament concluded, people were still streaming out of the stadium, talking about what they had just watched. One of Breuze’s groups watched the crowd from the roof of a building near the stadium.
Their gazes swept over the crowd while one of them occasionally looked at the spherical artifact in his hand.
After waiting for more than an hour, the number of people coming out of the stadium gradually became fewer and fewer until no one emerged from it anymore.
"I think there is nothing here. Let’s move on to the other place," one of the men in the group said.
"Hey, guys, I just realized something. Do you see Tyron’s group? Their group was supposed to be near ours over there, but now I can’t see them," his friend suddenly said as he looked into the distance.
One of his friends, a black-haired man, narrowed his eyes and looked in the same direction.
"There is no way they would leave their post without informing us. Lord Breuze already gave clear instructions not to move without coordination," he said.
After a few moments of thought, he turned toward the colleague who had first mentioned their disappearance.
"Creza, go check where they went."
"Alright."
The man named Creza immediately flew toward the location where the other team was supposed to be stationed.
When he arrived, his eyes narrowed as he confirmed that the team was truly gone. He could not see them anywhere nearby.
He looked down at the wide streets below, where many people were still walking around.
He still could not find any trace of them, but then his spiritual sense finally picked up something from a deserted alley about two kilometers away.
He frowned as a bad feeling suddenly rose in his heart. He could feel the lingering residue of a familiar aura there.
This was the death aura left behind by someone who had died not long ago. Although he had not yet comprehended death laws, he could already sense death aura.
He quickly moved in that direction, and the moment he arrived, his eyes widened in shock. What he saw sent a chill through his heart.
The group he had been looking for was already dead, each with a wound on their forehead. There were no other injuries on their bodies. They were simply lying together in the deserted alleyway.
He immediately returned to his group to report what he had found.
At this time, the deaths of Avergis’ followers had already become known to some of their colleagues.
Not long afterward, Breuze also heard about it, prompting him to personally inspect the situation.
He arrived at one of the locations and saw a group of his subordinates lying dead with the same wound on their foreheads.
Breuze frowned at the sight. Beside him, one of the demigods, a man, spoke.
"They all have the same wounds, and it looks like the assassins this time are truly masters. Even Immortal Saints would have difficulty dealing with them. There is almost no trace left behind, and there are no signs that the victims even detected their attackers. We suspect the assassins were much stronger than those in the Immortal Realm."
He paused as he observed the stab wound on one of the victims.
"However, the assassins still seemed to have a small weakness. Although they appeared to have done their best to cover their traces, they still could not remove everything."
He continued.
"A faint trace of the energy used by God Tarius’ followers can still be sensed, although it is far too weak to be detected by anyone below the Peak Immortal Saint Realm. Based on this trace, it is highly likely that the assassins are followers of God Tarius."
He then fell silent.
Breuze continued to frown as he felt that something was wrong. He approached one of the corpses and placed a hand on its forehead.
A few seconds later, dark energy suddenly appeared on Breuze’s palm. It only remained for a few seconds before disappearing once more.
During those few seconds, everyone near him felt a chill in their souls. It was as if they were standing before the source of death itself.
Even the demigods were no exception.
The demigod who saw the dark energy felt his heart tremble and his soul shake.
’That is Lord Breuze’s death energy. As someone who has comprehended the death laws, Lord Breuze can use techniques derived from those laws. It looks like he is using Corpse Mind Taker, a technique that allows him to look into the memories of the dead.’
After a few moments of silence, Breuze took a deep breath and slowly released it.
’The assassins are truly masters. They remained undetected even while carrying out the attack. This man never saw his attacker, but he sensed a faint trace of a follower of Tarius’ energy at the very last moment. The only evidence truly points toward Tarius’ followers.’
However, Breuze did not instantly place all the blame on Tarius’ followers despite the evidence pointing directly at them.
The proof indeed led toward the followers of God Tarius, but was it really that simple?
He knew their relationship with God Tarius had reached the lowest point. Both sides would gladly take advantage of any opportunity to weaken the other, even if it meant killing each other.
Even so, was this truly just a simple act of hostility from Tarius’ followers?
Especially when he and his group were in the middle of investigating the dangerous being suspected of having ascended from the First Heaven. That being most likely had connections to the rebel group, which meant this case could not be casually concluded as a normal attack carried out by Tarius’ followers.
He then tried to use his Karma Laws to trace the killer through the karmic connection left on the corpses. His eyes glistened as he focused on them. If it worked, he would be able to see the killer’s karmic thread.
However, he was stunned when he failed to trace it. The karmic thread itself seemed to have been cut off by the void.
Although his true cultivation was sealed in the Second Heaven and the technique he used was countless times weaker, it was still powered by the comprehension of a god. At the very least, it should have yielded some result.
’It looks like the killer possesses an artifact that prevents them from being tracked through karma-based techniques. Even the comprehension of a god is of no help in this matter.’
Breuze then looked at the demigod beside him.
"Has any unusual trace connected to the First Heaven or anything related to those rebels been found?" Breuze asked.
"As of now, there is nothing, my lord. All the evidence points toward the followers of Tarius," the demigod answered.
Breuze thought for a moment while looking at his dead subordinates before flying into the sky. He looked across the city and waited for a moment before the city lord himself, Su Zhen, hurried over to him.
"My apologies, Lord Breuze. I just heard what happened from one of your subordinates and rushed here immediately. I have already strengthened security throughout the city and ensured that no one can leave without undergoing a thorough inspection. We are also working together with some of Lord Breuze’s subordinates to make sure nothing is overlooked," he said with a slight bow.
Breuze did not turn to look at the city lord as he spoke.
"I will check the other locations. Have your forces blend in with the crowd. Don’t make it obvious, as what we are dealing with are experienced assassins. If your subordinates discover any unusual traces, such as the energy of Tarius’ followers or anything suspicious, do not act on your own. Report it directly to me."
"Yes, my lord," Su Zhen replied.
Breuze then flew away.
-----------------------------
At the inn where Aldrian was staying, he observed everything happening within his domain throughout the city. Breuze’s movements became his main focus as he wanted to see how the man would react.
As expected, someone like Breuze was not easily convinced even though all the evidence pointed toward Tarius’ followers. His instincts would not allow him to simply accept everything placed before him, even if it appeared to be an undeniable fact.
With his many comprehended laws and mastery of numerous techniques, he naturally wanted to ensure that he reached the correct conclusion.
He had even used techniques based on death laws to look into the memories of the corpses and attempted to trace the killer through karmic threads.
Aldrian was not surprised that Breuze could use such advanced methods and techniques. In the Second Heaven, which was already under Avergis’ control, he could use a small portion of his original power much more freely.
Unfortunately for Breuze, he was inside Aldrian’s domain.
Aldrian could block any attempt to trace the twins through karmic threads by using the power of his domain to sever or conceal those connections.
As long as they remained within his domain, no one would ever be able to track the twins, even if they possessed a divine-grade artifact.
After observing the situation for a few hours, Aldrian contacted the twins once more.
"It is time for the next targets."
