Chapter 434: Unifying Desires
The morning sun cast long, golden streaks across the clearing, the grass still damp with dew. Adam stood at the center, rolling his shoulders as he stretched his arms above his head. Lilith and Isolde stood a few paces away, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and skepticism.
Lilith’s crimson eyes gleamed with amusement as she tilted her head, a slow, knowing smile curving her lips. Her silver-white hair caught the morning light, and her voice carried a smooth, teasing edge.
"I didn’t expect you to want to fight me, Adam. Is this my punishment for being too possessive?"
Adam let out a low chuckle, shaking his head as he cracked his neck.
"Not exactly. I just want to test out some of my new skills. And I want to try something different—something I haven’t done before." He paused, his crimson eyes sweeping over them. "I want to experiment with a more defensive approach."
Isolde’s brow furrowed, her pale blue eyes narrowing with genuine confusion. Her voice carried a note of skepticism.
"Why us? Wouldn’t Ignis or Alice be better suited for this? They’re more direct in their attacks."
Adam’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile as he shook his head.
"They’d get too carried away. If I asked Ignis to spar with me, she’d end up setting the entire clearing on fire. And Alice would probably try to assassinate me before I even got a chance to test anything. You two are more controlled—I can actually focus on what I’m trying to learn."
Lilith’s smile sharpened, a flicker of approval passing through her crimson eyes. Her voice carried a note of playful challenge as she took a step forward.
"Controlled? That’s a generous way to describe us." She paused, her fingers tracing the edge of her sleeve. "But I suppose I can play along. What exactly are you planning to test?"
Adam’s grin widened, his voice carrying a note of dark anticipation.
"First, I want to see how well my new defensive skills hold up against a coordinated attack. Lilith, you’re fast and precise—I want you to pressure me from a distance. Keep me on my toes. And Isolde—" His gaze shifted to her, his voice dropping slightly. "I want you to get close. Test my reaction time. See if I can handle someone who can match my speed."
Isolde’s pale blue eyes narrowed, a flicker of competitive fire igniting behind them. Her voice carried a note of quiet determination.
"Alright. But don’t blame me if I leave a few marks."
Adam’s grin widened, his voice carrying a note of playful confidence.
"I wouldn’t expect anything less."
Lilith’s fingers curled, and silver threads materialized in the air around her, glinting like spider silk in the morning light. Her voice dropped to a smooth, silken murmur.
"Then let’s begin."
Isolde moved first.
Isolde’s form blurred, closing the distance in a heartbeat. The Crimson Blossom Crown on her brow pulsed, and the flower at its peak bloomed—unfurling into a blade of hardened crimson, sleek and elegant, its surface gleaming like polished ruby. It seemed to drink the light around it, leaving faint trails of shadow in its wake.
She swept it toward Adam’s shoulder in a clean, precise arc.
Adam’s body reacted before his mind could catch up. He pivoted, the blade passing inches from his chest, and his hand shot out, aiming for her wrist.
But Isolde was already gone. She flowed around his counter like water, her blade reversing direction in a fluid motion aimed at his side.
Adam twisted, his arm coming up to block. The blade met his forearm, a shower of sparks erupting from the impact. He felt the force of the strike through his scales, a sharp, jarring vibration that traveled up his arm.
He locked his gaze with Isolde’s. A flicker of respect passed between them before they disengaged.
Then Lilith attacked.
Silver threads shot toward him from every angle, a web of shimmering silk that seemed to fill the air around him. Adam’s wings snapped open, carrying him upward just as the threads converged on the space where he had been standing. They tangled around nothing, pulling taut before dissolving into motes of silver light.
Adam landed in a crouch, a grin spreading across his face.
"Not bad."
Lilith’s smile sharpened, her voice carrying a note of playful reproach.
"You’re not bad yourself."
She followed up with another volley of threads, these ones faster, more precise. Adam weaved between them, his body moving with serpentine grace. He ducked under one, twisted past another, and caught a third in his hand, yanking it toward him.
The thread snapped taut, and Lilith was pulled off balance, stumbling forward. Adam used the momentum to close the distance, his hand already extended toward her wrist.
But Isolde was there.
Her blade swept toward his ribs, forcing him to abandon the grapple and retreat. He leaped back, his wings catching the air as he put distance between them.
He landed in a crouch, his voice carrying a note of breathless approval.
"Good coordination."
Lilith’s voice drifted over, carrying a note of smooth amusement as she adjusted her sleeve.
"It’s what we do best."
Adam’s lips curved into a slow, satisfied grin.
"Alright. I think I’ve seen enough."
He straightened, brushing the dust from his clothes, his crimson eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
"It went better than I expected. My instincts are still sharp."
Isolde’s brow furrowed, a flicker of disappointment passing through her pale blue eyes. Her voice carried a note of dry skepticism as she lowered her blade.
"That’s it? We barely started."
Adam let out a low chuckle, meeting her gaze with an easy shrug. "Yeah, that’s it. Just wanted to test the waters—see how my instincts hold up after stacking all those new skills." He paused, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "Didn’t want to go all out and accidentally hurt either of you."
Lilith’s crimson eyes narrowed, her voice dropping to a smooth, pointed edge as she crossed her arms.
"You think you could hurt me?" She tilted her head, a flicker of challenge passing through her gaze. "I’m not as fragile as I look, Adam. You should know that by now."
Isolde’s voice followed, carrying a note of quiet insistence as she stepped closer.
"Neither am I. If you’re going to test your limits, don’t hold back because you’re afraid of hurting us. We can take it."
Adam’s lips curved into a slow, genuine smile—warm, grateful, and touched by their faith. His voice carried a note of quiet sincerity as he met their gazes.
"You’re right. I shouldn’t underestimate you. And honestly..." He paused, his gaze dropping to his hands for a moment before lifting again. "I was hoping to get something out of this—not just a fight. I wanted to see if I could find some harmony. A way to bring together all the different parts of myself. All the chaos I’ve been carrying since the dungeon. I thought maybe if I could feel how my skills flow together in combat, I might find a clue."
Lilith’s expression softened, a flicker of understanding passing through her crimson eyes. Her voice was quieter than before.
"Chaos is part of who you are, Adam. You can’t just untangle it and expect it to make sense."
Adam’s gaze met hers, steady and unflinching.
"I know. But I’m not trying to untangle it. I’m trying to understand it."
Isolde’s hand drifted to her chest, her voice carrying a note of quiet conviction.
"Then we’ll help you. However long it takes."
Adam’s smile widened, a flicker of warmth passing through his crimson eyes.
"Thank you."
Adam took a slow, deliberate step back, his gaze sweeping over the clearing. The morning light filtered through the canopy, casting dappled gold across the grass. He let out a slow, steadying breath, his hands dropping to his sides.
"Alright. Let’s try this again."
Lilith’s threads stirred around her fingers, her smile sharpening with renewed anticipation. Isolde’s blade shifted in her grip, her pale blue eyes gleaming with quiet focus.
Adam’s voice carried a note of quiet anticipation as he settled into a low, ready stance.
"Come at me with everything you’ve got."
Lilith moved first.
Her form blurred, Soulreaver already in her grip, the dark blade humming with hungry anticipation. She closed the distance in the space between heartbeats, the scythe sweeping in a low, horizontal arc aimed at Adam’s ribs.
Adam pivoted, his body flowing with practiced ease as the blade passed inches from his scales. His hand shot out, dark energy coiling around his fingers as he reached for her wrist.
But Lilith was already gone.
She twisted mid-strike, Soulreaver reversing direction in a fluid, brutal arc aimed at his throat. Adam’s wings snapped open, carrying him backward just as the blade passed through the space where his neck had been.
He landed in a crouch, a grin spreading across his face.
"Almost got me."
Lilith’s voice drifted over, smooth and amused, as she adjusted her grip on the blade.
"Next time, I won’t miss."
Before Adam could respond, Isolde moved.
Her form flickered, closing the distance in a blur of motion. Her blade, sleek and elegant, swept toward Adam’s shoulder in a clean, precise arc. He twisted, the strike grazing his scales, and retaliated with a sharp, open-palmed strike aimed at her chest.
Isolde caught his wrist, her grip surprisingly strong, and used his momentum to pull him off balance. She drove her shoulder into his chest, and Adam stumbled back, a surprised laugh escaping his lips.
"Okay, I didn’t expect that."
