Chapter 418: True Domain of Dragons
A golden aura exploded from Ignis’s body, flooding the clearing with warm, intense light. The air around her shimmered with heat, and the grass beneath her feet withered, blackened, then burst into flames within seconds. Ignis herself looked stunned, her golden eyes blazing brighter than ever, while the flames around her shifted to a brilliant white-gold.
"I... I can feel so much power!" Ignis exclaimed, her voice trembling with awe and exhilaration.
Adam’s eyes widened as he felt the surge of mana radiating from Ignis. He raised a hand, shielding his face from the intense heat. "Ignis, don’t release it all at once! Control it!"
"I can’t hold it back!" Ignis’s voice cracked as the golden light intensified, pulsing in waves that warped the air around her. The temperature spiked, and the ground beneath her began to crack and melt.
Adam gritted his teeth and pushed forward, stepping into the searing heat. His scales rippled beneath his skin, [Aegis of the Colossus] flaring to life as a shimmering barrier wrapped around his body. Even so, the heat was intense—he could feel it pressing against his defenses, seeping through the cracks.
He reached Ignis, his hands closing around her shoulders. Her skin was burning hot, almost too hot to touch, but he held on.
"Ignis! Focus on me! Circulate your mana—don’t let it burst out all at once!"
Ignis’s golden eyes met his, wide and unfocused, overwhelmed by the power flooding through her. "I... I can’t... it’s too much..."
Adam’s voice dropped, firm but steady. "I’ll help you. Just follow my lead."
He closed his eyes, reaching out with his own mana, feeling the chaotic storm inside Ignis.
"Breathe, Ignis. In... and out. Feel the flow of your mana. You’re not just a dragon—you’re a Blazeheart. Fire is yours to command, not the other way around."
Ignis’s breathing slowed, her trembling easing as she focused on his voice. The golden light began to pulse in a steadier rhythm, no longer wild and chaotic.
"That’s it," Adam murmured. "You’re doing it. Just a little more."
The intensity of the light gradually dimmed, the heat receding as Ignis’s body began to acclimate to the new power. The golden aura settled around her like a second skin, no longer erupting but flowing in controlled waves.
Ignis let out a shaky breath, her eyes slowly returning to their normal golden hue. Her voice came out soft, awed.
"I... I feel... incredible. Like I’m more than I was before."
Adam watched as Ignis’s body began to shift. The golden light that had been radiating from her intensified, swirling around her like a cocoon of living fire. Her eyes fluttered closed, and her breathing slowed, deepening into a steady, rhythmic pattern.
Adam’s brow furrowed as he stepped back, giving her space. "It looks like you won’t be a Blazeheart anymore."
He could only wait now. Ignis was evolving, and there was nothing he could do but watch and ensure nothing interfered.
Then he felt it.
A faint, familiar warmth pulsed from his chest—the dragon tattoo Orion had placed on him. It was glowing, pulsing in time with Ignis’s aura. Adam looked down, his eyes widening.
"What is this? Is this tattoo resonating with Ignis’s aura?"
Before he could ponder further, a voice echoed in his mind.
"It has been a long time. How have you been?"
Adam’s breath caught. He recognized that voice instantly.
"Orion? What is this? I didn’t know there was another function to this contract besides the binding."
Orion sounded quietly amused. "I merely connected the frequency of the mana I stored within you and linked it to myself. I sensed a surge of new draconic aura—one far more potent than before. It piqued my curiosity."
Adam glanced at Ignis’s glowing form, then back down at the tattoo on his chest. "Yeah, that’s Ignis. She just unleashed a massive surge of mana. But what do you mean by ’new draconic aura’? She’s already a dragon, isn’t she?"
Orion’s voice was thoughtful. "Ignis was a dragon only in body, not in spirit. Her aura and mana never fully awakened to their draconic potential. I could only sense a faint echo before. But now... it seems she has awakened that part of herself completely."
Adam’s eyes widened. He looked at Ignis, at the golden cocoon of fire surrounding her, and a slow, understanding smile spread across his face.
"So this is her true awakening."
"One could say that," Orion replied, his voice calm but layered with meaning. "But more precisely, this is Ignis’s step toward the true domain of dragons."
Adam frowned, not fully understanding. "Hmm. I don’t see the difference. She was already a dragon before, and now she’s still a dragon. What’s the change?"
Orion let out a low hum. "It is no wonder you cannot feel the difference. You yourself are far too different—or perhaps it is more accurate to say you are far removed from the domain of dragons."
Adam paused, then asked, "Why is that?"
Orion’s voice was slow, steady, and impossibly serene. "Because within you, there are too many random elements. That chaotic mixture makes your aura unstable and unbalanced."
Adam’s brow furrowed. "So... I’m not a dragon at all?"
A hint of amusement crept into Orion’s tone. "If I were to be precise... you could be considered a dragon, and you could also not."
Adam’s voice rose with exasperation. "Don’t speak in such vague terms! It’s confusing."
Orion’s voice steadied, becoming more direct. "The core of it is this: you carry too many different essences within you. Your body emits an aura that is random and unrecognizable to the natural order of draconic beings. You still possess draconic power but you are not part of the dragon lineage. You are something else entirely, walking a path that diverges from ours."
Adam was silent for a long moment, his gaze drifting back to Ignis. The golden light around her was beginning to stabilize, the wild surges settling into a steady, rhythmic pulse.
"...So I’m an anomaly," Adam said quietly.
Orion’s voice carried a note of approval. "Exactly. And that is not a bad thing. It simply means you cannot be measured by the standards of any single race. Your path is your own."
