Chapter 441: Lines Crossed
Demon Territory – Celine’s War Tent
The tent was bathed in the dim, crimson glow of enchanted braziers, their flames casting long, dancing shadows across the canvas walls. A large map of the region lay spread across the central table, marked with small flags and pins indicating troop movements, supply lines, and key positions.
At the head of the table sat Celine, her pale features sharp and focused in the flickering light.
She leaned back, her fingers steepling beneath her chin as she studied the map before her.
"How did the attack go? Were the assassins successful?"
A demon officer stepped forward, his posture rigid, his voice carrying a note of satisfaction.
"Very successful, Commander. The assassins struck Selena’s headquarters as planned."
A cold, satisfied smile tugged at the corner of Celine’s mouth.
"Good. With this, our path grows wider." She paused, her gaze shifting to the other officers gathered around the table. "I want you to prepare additional troops for when the time comes. We cannot afford to lose momentum."
Another officer, older and more cautious, stepped forward. His voice carried a note of hesitation.
"Commander... I’m concerned about Melium. They have sent forces to this region under the guise of ’peacekeeping’ and ’diplomatic support,’ but we both know their true intentions. They are watching us. If they learn what we are planning..."
Celine’s smile didn’t waver. She shook her head slowly, her voice dropping to a cold, measured tone.
"Melium is a fragile kingdom. They only survive because of our support and Solaria’s. Their so-called ’peacekeeping’ forces are nothing but a mask for their desperation. They don’t have the strength to challenge us directly, and they know it."
The older officer’s brow furrowed, his voice dropping lower.
"And what about the one-armed knight and her subordinates? They are still stationed here, under the pretense of ’alliance.’ If they learn of our true intentions..."
Celine’s violet eyes narrowed.
"Then we kill them. They are not allies—they are obstacles, and obstacles must be removed."
She turned her gaze back to the map, her fingers tracing the jagged lines of the northern border.
"Prepare the troops. We move when the signal is given."
Meanwhile...
In a shadowed corner of the war tent, unnoticed by the demon officers, a small lizard with gleaming eyes blinked. Its head tilted, and a faint, almost imperceptible shimmer passed across its scales.
Across the camp, in a separate tent, a woman with round spectacles and a wizard’s hat sat cross-legged on a worn rug. Her eyes were closed, her hands resting on her knees, her lips moving in a silent chant. A faint, shimmering thread of light connected her to the small lizard, pulsing with each blink of its eyes.
Seraphina stood behind her, her eyes fixed on the woman’s face. Her remaining hand rested on the hilt of her sword, her posture rigid with tension.
"Well, Bianca? What did you see?"
Bianca’s eyes snapped open, her face pale beneath the brim of her hat. Her voice came out tight, edged with alarm.
"The demons have already attacked Kaelthar and they’re preparing to strike again." She paused, her throat bobbing as she swallowed. "They’re planning to kill us, before we can interfere with their plans."
Franc, the blonde knight slammed his fist against the wooden table, the impact rattling the lantern and sending shadows dancing across the canvas walls. His voice was low, but carried the weight of years of suppressed frustration.
"Finally, they’ve shown their true colors. They were never allies."
Reith, the tall, calm soldier with long flowing hair, raised a hand in a placating gesture. His voice was measured, but carried an edge of warning.
"Keep your voice down, Franc. You’ll attract unwanted attention."
Another soldier let out a low, bitter laugh.
"Unwanted attention? Reith, they’re already planning to kill us. I’d say the time for caution has passed."
Franc didn’t respond immediately. He straightened slowly, his eyes narrowing as they swept the tent, counting heads. When he spoke, his voice carried a sharp edge of concern.
"Where’s Kloss? He was supposed to report back an hour ago."
Before anyone could answer, a heavy thud against the canvas wall made them all freeze. The tent fabric bulged inward, then something crashed through—a body, limp and bloodied, tumbling onto the dirt floor.
It was Kloss.
His armor was cracked, his face pale, his breathing shallow and ragged. A deep gash ran across his chest, still seeping blood. His eyes fluttered, unfocused, struggling to stay open.
The soldiers surged forward, voices overlapping in frantic concern.
"Kloss!"
"What happened to him?!"
Seraphina was already at his side, one hand pressing against the wound to stem the bleeding, her voice sharp and commanding as she looked up at Bianca.
"Bianca! Heal him."
Bianca hands shot forward, and a soft, golden light enveloped Kloss’s body, sinking into his wounds with a gentle hum.
A moment later, the tent flap was thrown open. Celine stepped through, her violet eyes cold and unblinking, her voice carrying a note of mock pity.
"Ah. I see you’ve found your stray."
The tent went still. The only sound was the faint, wet rasp of Kloss’s breathing and the soft crackle of the lantern flame.
Celine’s gaze swept over them, a thin smile curling at the corner of her lips.
"Your subordinate lacked proper manners. I simply taught him a lesson." Her head tilted slightly, her voice dropping to a silken murmur. "Let this serve as a reminder."
Franc’s hand shot to his sword hilt, his voice sharp as a drawn blade.
"You—"
Seraphina’s hand shot up, cutting him off. Her voice was calm, but carried the weight of command.
"Stand down, Franc."
Franc’s hand fell from his sword hilt, but the motion was stiff, reluctant.
"Tch!"
Celine paused at the tent entrance, glancing back over her shoulder.
"That’s right. You should learn to keep your dogs on a shorter leash. It’s better for everyone that way."
Seraphina’s eyes hardened. Her voice was cold, steady, carrying the weight of a woman who had long since stopped tolerating disrespect.
"You’ve crossed a line, Commander. Do you truly believe you can act with impunity?"
Celine’s smile didn’t waver. She turned fully, her arms folding as she met Seraphina’s gaze with open, mocking amusement.
"Impunity? My dear knight, what exactly are you going to do about it? Your little kingdom is fragile. You can barely hold your own borders, let alone challenge the might of the demon forces." She tilted her head, her voice dropping to a silken murmur. "You have no leverage here."
The air in the tent shifted.
Her aura pressed against the entire tent, and everyone inside felt the overwhelming pressure of it. Seraphina’s aura had risen.
Her eyes blazed with a cold, focused light. She reached for her sword, the movement slow and certain, each inch a declaration of intent.
The blade whispered free of its sheath.
"You’ve wounded my subordinate," Seraphina said, her voice low and steady, each word falling like a blade. "You’ve threatened my people, and you’ve made it clear that you consider our alliance nothing but a convenience to be discarded."
She took a step forward.
"That crosses the line of what I am willing to tolerate."
The soldiers behind her shifted, their hands moving to their weapons, their eyes fixed on Celine with cold focus.
Celine’s mocking smile flickered. Her voice, when it came, was softer than before.
"Aha~ Perhaps your title is more than just a title after all."
