Chapter 431: Glasses
Adam pushed open the door to the shared quarters, the familiar scent of aged paper and faint floral perfume greeting him. The room was bathed in the soft, golden glow of the afternoon light filtering through the grime-caked windows. Lilith sat in the armchair by the window, her legs crossed at the knee, a leather-bound book open in her lap.
And perched on her nose was a pair of delicate, silver-framed glasses.
The light caught the lenses, glinting softly as she turned a page with deliberate, unhurried grace. Her silver-white hair cascaded over one shoulder, and the glasses framed her sharp, elegant features in a way that made Adam stop mid-step.
Adam’s internal voice was a low, appreciative murmur.
’She looks... really good in glasses. How did I not notice she had those?’
Lilith’s crimson eyes lifted from the page, fixing on him with calm, knowing amusement. She closed the book slowly, setting it aside on the armrest.
"Adam." Her voice was smooth, carrying a note of measured curiosity. "You’re back. I trust your errand went well?"
Adam blinked, forcing himself to focus on her words instead of the way the glasses caught the light. He cleared his throat, stepping further into the room.
"Yeah. It went fine. We handled the situation."
Lilith’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile as she tilted her head, studying him with those sharp, crimson eyes.
"Is that so? You seem... distracted. Did something happen on your walk?"
Adam’s hand drifted to the back of his neck, a faint flush creeping up his cheeks.
"No, nothing happened. I just..." He paused, his gaze flickering to the glasses. "Since when do you wear glasses?"
Lilith’s smile widened, a flicker of amusement passing through her eyes. She reached up, adjusting the silver frames with deliberate precision, her fingers brushing against the delicate metal.
"I found them in one of Selena’s study rooms. She had quite the collection—I simply borrowed a pair that caught my eye." She tilted her head, her voice dropping to a low, teasing murmur. "Do you like them?"
Adam’s voice came out a little too quickly and too honest.
"Yeah. They suit you."
Lilith’s smile deepened, a flicker of satisfaction passing through her crimson eyes. She rose from the chair with fluid grace, crossing the room in a few unhurried steps. She stopped before him, close enough that he could smell the faint, floral scent of her perfume, and looked up at him through the silver-framed lenses.
"Then I suppose I’ll keep them." Her voice was soft, carrying a note of quiet intimacy.
Adam’s gaze drifted to the glasses again, then back to her eyes. He forced himself to focus.
"Actually... I wanted to apologize. For leaving you behind in the dungeon."
Lilith’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in her eyes—a brief, subtle shift that she quickly masked. Her voice was light, carrying a note of casual dismissal.
"Oh? You’re apologizing now? How thoughtful of you."
Adam’s throat tightened, his voice carrying a note of earnest sincerity.
"I mean it, Lilith. I shouldn’t have left you like that. I was caught up in the moment, and I didn’t think about how it would affect you. I’m sorry."
Lilith studied him for a long moment. Then she let out a slow, measured breath, her fingers reaching up to adjust her glasses again.
"You have a habit of acting first and considering the consequences later, Adam. It’s one of your more... frustrating qualities." She paused, a faint, almost imperceptible smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "But I suppose I’ve grown accustomed to it."
Adam’s shoulders eased, a flicker of relief passing through his eyes.
"Does that mean you forgive me?"
Lilith’s smile sharpened, a flicker of playful mischief returning to her eyes.
"I didn’t say that. But I’m willing to consider it." She reached up, her fingers brushing against his cheek with light, deliberate slowness. "If you make it up to me."
Adam’s voice was cautious, carrying a note of wary curiosity.
"How do you want me to make it up to you?"
Lilith’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile. She stepped closer, close enough that her breath brushed against his skin, and her voice dropped to a low, silken murmur.
"I’m sure we can think of something."
Adam’s lips curved into a slow smile as he studied Lilith’s face—the way the silver-framed glasses caught the light, the faint flush of color in her cheeks, the sharp glint of defiance in her crimson eyes. He let out a low, amused hum, his voice carrying a note of playful acknowledgment.
"You’re getting bolder, Lilith."
Lilith’s smile didn’t waver. She tilted her head, the glasses catching the light as she met his gaze with unwavering confidence. Her voice was smooth, carrying a sharp edge of challenge.
"Of course I am. I refuse to be outdone by a certain fiery little dragon." She paused, her fingers brushing against his collar with deliberate slowness. "Especially when my partner is so utterly oblivious to my feelings that he spends his time being affectionate with someone else while I’m left to stew in my irritation."
Adam hummed lowly, thinking, as he looked at Lilith’s face. He sounded genuinely surprised.
"I didn’t realize you could be this competitive, Lilith."
Lilith’s crimson eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of something vulnerable passing through them before she masked it with a sharp, defensive edge. Her voice dropped, carrying a note of quiet honesty.
"I’m not competitive. I’m jealous." She paused, her fingers curling into the fabric of his collar. "And I want you to pay more attention to me."
Adam’s expression softened, a flicker of understanding passing through his crimson eyes. His voice was quiet, earnest.
"I will. I’ll pay more attention to you. I promise."
Lilith’s gaze held his, searching for any hint of insincerity. Her voice was soft, but carried a note of challenge.
"Then prove it."
Adam didn’t look away. He leaned in slowly, his hand coming up to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing across her skin with gentle, deliberate warmth. He paused, his lips hovering just inches from hers.
"Like this?"
He closed the distance.
His lips met hers in a slow, gentle kiss. Lilith’s breath caught, her eyes fluttering closed for just a moment before she responded, her lips parting against his, her fingers tightening in his collar.
The kiss deepened, a quiet, smoldering heat passing between them. Adam’s hand slid to the back of her neck, pulling her closer, and Lilith let out a soft, almost inaudible sound against his lips.
When they finally pulled apart, both of them were slightly breathless. Lilith’s cheeks were flushed, her eyes hazy with something between surprise and satisfaction.
Adam’s voice was low, his forehead resting against hers.
"Was that proof enough?"
Lilith’s lips curved into a slow, satisfied smile.
"...For now."
