Chapter 443: The Lone Knight
Franc didn’t waste a second. His command ripped through the air, sharp and desperate.
"Move! Move! Move!"
He grabbed Kloss, hoisting the wounded soldier over his shoulder with a grunt of effort.
Reith’s feet stayed rooted for just a moment longer, his gaze fixed on Seraphina’s lone figure standing against the tide of demons. His internal voice was a bitter, churning storm.
’This is wrong. Leaving her behind... I should be fighting beside her. But I’d only be a burden. That demon’s aura—it’s no joke. I’d just get in the way.’
His hands curled into fists, nails biting into his palms.
’I’ll come back.’
He spun on his heel and ran, his boots pounding against the blood-soaked earth.
Bianca’s voice rose above the chaos, sharp and desperate as she ran, her robes flapping behind her.
"Commander! Don’t give up! We’ll bring help! I promise—just hold on!"
Her hands wove through the air as she ran, and a burst of golden light erupted from her palms—a flare that shot into the sky, a signal that would be seen for miles.
A demon soldier lunged at Franc from the side, its blade aimed at his exposed flank. Franc twisted, his own sword coming up to meet the strike and drove his shoulder into the demon’s chest, sending it stumbling back.
Reith was already there, his blade carving through another demon’s throat before it could reach Bianca. His voice was sharp, focused.
"Keep moving! Don’t stop for anything!"
Bianca’s voice was breathless, but sharp with authority as she ran.
"Franc! The route—I’m leaving it to Gilbert! He knows the way better than any of us!"
Gilbert leading the group toward a narrow path that wound between the jagged rocks. The others followed without hesitation, their footsteps pounding in unison.
Franc’s voice carried the weight of a man who had already accepted the cost of his duty.
"Gilbert! Get them out of here!"
"Understood." Gilbert gave a curt nod, his gaze already fixed on the winding path ahead, mentally mapping every twist and turn.
Behind them, Seraphina stood alone against the tide, the golden light of her sword blazing in the dimness. Demons fell before her, their bodies crumpling as her blade carved through them, but more kept coming, endless and relentless.
She could feel the weight of their numbers pressing against her, the cold certainty that she would not survive this. And yet, as she saw her soldiers disappear into the distance, a quiet smile touched her lips.
"With this, I can be at peace."
She turned to face the next wave, raising her sword.
"Come on then. I’m not done yet."
Behind her, the sounds of her soldiers’ retreat faded into the distance, swallowed by the roar of battle. Seraphina’s golden light blazed brighter, a defiant beacon in the gathering dark.
Celine watched from the edge of the chaos, her sword resting lazily against her shoulder. Her voice carried a note of cold, almost amused curiosity.
"Hmm. So it’s true. The knight is willing to die for her soldiers. How rare and how pointless."
She raised her hand, and the demons paused, their ranks parting as Celine stepped forward.
"I’ll give you a choice, Seraphina. Lay down your sword, and I’ll consider letting your soldiers live. Continue this pointless resistance, and I’ll hunt them down myself."
Seraphina’s answer was to raise her blade higher, the golden light blazing brighter.
"I’d rather die with honor than live with shame."
Celine’s gaze dropped, a flicker of genuine disappointment passing through her violet eyes. She let out a soft, almost wistful sigh.
"I see. How unfortunate." She straightened, her voice shifting to a cold, commanding edge as she addressed her subordinates. "Find those humans. Don’t let a single one escape."
The demons stirred, ready to move—
And then Seraphina’s aura exploded.
A shockwave of pure, golden light erupted from her body, slamming into the demons like a physical force. The soldiers closest to her were hurled backward. The ground beneath her feet cracked, and the air itself seemed to tremble under the weight of her will.
Celine’s eyes widened. Her hand shot up, shielding her face from the blast. For a moment, she simply stared—at the lone knight, standing amidst the chaos, her aura blazing like a second sun.
Seraphina’s voice rose above the chaos, fierce and unyielding.
"I won’t let that happen."
Celine’s surprise gave way to a colder expression.
"Change of plans," she said. "None of you interfere. It’s been too long since I’ve had a worthy opponent."
She raised her blade, pointing it directly at Seraphina’s heart.
"I hope you can keep up, one-armed knight."
Seraphina’s grip tightened on her sword. The golden light along its edge blazed brighter.
"I’ve been keeping up my whole life."
Seraphina surged forward, her blade wrapped in a blinding shroud of golden light. She closed the distance in a heartbeat, bringing her sword down in a devastating overhead strike aimed at Celine’s shoulder.
Celine’s blade shot up to meet it.
CLANG—BOOM!
The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the ground, kicking up dust and debris. Celine’s feet slid back, her boots carving shallow trenches in the earth. Her arm trembled slightly under the weight of the blow, and her violet eyes narrowed with something between surprise and grudging respect.
’Heavy...’ she thought.
She twisted her wrist, redirecting Seraphina’s blade and shoving it aside. The sudden shift in momentum sent Seraphina stumbling back a step—but before she could fully recover, Celine was already moving.
Her blade carved a brutal arc toward Seraphina’s exposed side.
Seraphina’s body twisted mid-step, her sword snapping up to meet the strike. The two blades clashed with a deafening CRACK that echoed across the battlefield, and a shockwave of gold and crimson light exploded outward. The demon soldiers who had been watching stumbled back, shielding their eyes.
One of them let out a low whistle.
"Unbelievable... a human, matching the White Demon blade for blade."
Another demon soldier shook his head slowly, his voice carrying a note of genuine awe.
"With only one arm. I’ve never seen anything like it."
