Chapter 16: The Morrath
Gray held his position, his body motionless among the fronds. His glow was dim, his bell contracted. The creature’s vibration pattern suggested it was maybe four feet long, give or take. Compact body and explosive speed. The kind of fast that closed gaps before they even existed.
’Stay still. It might pass by.’
It didn’t pass by.
The vibration stopped. Directly ahead. Maybe ten feet. The creature had paused, and Gray felt the water shift as it turned. It was facing him.
’...It knows I’m here.’
He extended his tentacles, trying to read more detail. The creature’s body was long and low, its tail broad and muscular. It had no fins that he could detect, just a sinuous, serpentine body that undulated slowly as it held its position. And its head—there was something strange about its head. An absence where there should have been a jaw. A flat, sensory surface that seemed to be tasting the water.

« Analysis »
An ambush predator common to kelp forests and rocky mid-depth environments. The Morrath resembles a moray eel in body shape but possesses a flat, shovel-like head covered in electroreceptive sensors. It detects prey through a combination of vibration sensing and passive electroreception—the ability to sense the faint electrical fields generated by living creatures.
Weakness: Its electroreception makes it highly sensitive to electrical overload. Sudden electrical discharges can disorient or stun it for extended periods.
Gray read the analysis twice.
’It’s weak to electricity.’
A slow, predatory grin spread through his mind.
’Oh, this is going to be fun.’
The Morrath lunged.
Its sinuous body uncoiled like a spring, shooting through the water with its flat head aimed directly at Gray’s bell. The kelp fronds barely rustled as it passed—the creature was adapted for this environment, its body slipping through the dense foliage without resistance.
But Gray had felt it coming. His tentacles had read the tensing of its muscles, the sudden spike in vibration as it launched. He pulsed sideways, fourteen SPD carrying him just out of reach. The Morrath’s jaws hidden beneath that flat, sensory head snapped shut on a mouthful of kelp.
’Missed me.’
He activated Toxin Cloud. The nematocysts spread through the water, but the Morrath was already moving again, its body weaving through the fronds with terrifying agility. The cloud barely grazed its flank before it disappeared into the kelp.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 6 DAMAGE]
[MORRATH — HP: 144 / 150]
[PARALYZE — RESISTED]
’It’s Fast. Faster than the hunter. And it can feel me. Every little spark my body makes. Bioluminescent Pulse, my old friend, my constant curse—you’ve officially gone from minor annoyance to actively trying to get me killed.’
The Morrath circled somewhere in the kelp, its vibrations fading and then returning as it repositioned. Gray extended his tentacles, trying to track it, but the kelp itself was interfering. Every frond that brushed against his bell sent a false signal. Every tiny creature that darted through the water added noise to the pattern.
’An ambush predator that knew how to use the kelp. Strike, vanish, strike again. It wasn’t stupid enough to linger in the venom.’
He needed to change the equation.
’If I can’t see it and it can feel me... then I need to make it come to me on my terms.’
He pulsed backward into a slightly more open patch of water, where the kelp was thinner and he had room to maneuver. The Morrath followed, its vibrations circling wider now, more cautious. It had felt the venom. It knew he was dangerous.
’Good. Be cautious. Take your time.’
He let his Bioluminescent Pulse brighten slightly, just enough to make himself a more obvious target. The Morrath’s vibrations quickened. It was interested.
’Here, fishy fishy, I’m right here.’
The Morrath lunged again.
This time, Gray was ready.
He activated Overcharge. The electricity erupted across his bell in brilliant blue-white arcs, and the sudden surge of current did exactly what the analysis had promised. The Morrath convulsed mid-lunge, its flat head twisting away from the electrical field as if it had slammed into a wall. Its body seized, muscles locking.
[OVERCHARGE — CONTACT DENIED]
[MORRATH — DISORIENTED — 5 SECONDS]
[Status Effect: Electroreceptive Overload — The target’s electrical sensing organs have been overwhelmed. It cannot detect prey or navigate effectively for the duration.]
’Five seconds of blindness. Not quite a stun, but I’ll take it.’
He deployed Toxin Cloud directly on top of the thrashing predator. The nematocysts enveloped its sinuous body, and the damage ticks began.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 8 DAMAGE]
[TOXIN CLOUD — 9 DAMAGE]
[TOXIN CLOUD — 7 DAMAGE]
[MORRATH — HP: 120 / 150]
The Morrath thrashed wildly, its tail lashing through the kelp. It couldn’t see him. Couldn’t feel him. Its primary sense had been turned against it, and it was drowning in venom it couldn’t escape. But it wasn’t dead yet. The disorientation was already fading, and when it cleared—
The Morrath’s head snapped toward him. Its electroreception was back active, and it was furious.
It lunged a third time. Gray pulsed sideways, but the Morrath had learned from its mistakes. It anticipated his dodge, its body twisting mid-lunge to match his trajectory. The flat head slammed into his bell, and the hidden jaws beneath it clamped down.
[-25 HP]
[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 175 / 200]
’Twenty-five damage. Through fourteen DEF. This thing hits like a truck.’
He wrapped his tentacles around the Morrath’s body and squeezed, dragging it deeper into the Toxin Cloud still billowing around him.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 7 DAMAGE]
[TOXIN CLOUD — 6 DAMAGE]
[MORRATH — HP: 109 / 150]
[PARALYZE — RESISTED]
’Of course you little shiit!’
The Morrath thrashed in his grip, its muscular body tearing free. It retreated into the kelp, but it didn’t go far. Gray felt its vibrations circling, waiting for another opening.
’It’s tougher than the hunter. Smarter, too. It knows I can hurt it now, but it’s not running. The worst kind. It won’t commit until it knows it’ll win.’
He checked his cooldowns. Toxin Cloud was ready. Overcharge had eighteen seconds left.
’Eighteen seconds. I just need to survive for eighteen seconds.’
The Morrath lunged again. Gray pulsed sideways, but the Morrath’s tail whipped around and caught him across the bell.
[-15 HP]
[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 160 / 200]
’It’s using its whole body as a weapon. The fu—’
The hit-and-run was over. Now it just wanted blood. The Morrath pressed the attack, its flat head weaving through the water as it snapped at his tentacles. Gray pulsed backward, deploying Toxin Cloud between them. The Morrath veered off, unwilling to enter the venom sphere, but it didn’t go far. It circled the cloud’s perimeter, waiting for it to dissipate.
’Ten seconds on Overcharge. Come on.’
The cloud held. The Morrath circled. And Gray felt something shift in the water behind him.
A second vibration pattern. Identical to the first. Coming from the opposite direction.
’...There’s two of them.’
