Chapter 78: Reflections of a Genius
Gray drifted through the dark water after leaving the Sunken Hollow, his senses sweeping the silence like a blade held ready. The hunt had been quiet so far, only small fish and distant electrical signatures at the edge of his perception. He was starting to wonder if the area had been overhunted.
Then the water rippled.
Two shapes streaked out of the darkness, thin and angular, their pale silver bodies flickering in and out of his perception like knives spinning through the black. They moved in wide, parallel arcs, crossing in front of him and breaking apart with perfect timing.
’Two of them,’ he thought. ’This is going to be tight.’
Cindy’s voice came, sharp but steady. "I see them. The one on the left is trying to flank you."
’I know. I can feel it when it moves through the light.’
The left Ray tilted, its boomerang-shaped body aligning for a slashing pass. The right one banked wide, cutting off Gray’s escape route.
’They know exactly where the other one is. It’s like they share one mind.’
"Then we need to force them apart. I’ll try to separate them with a barrier." Cindy said.
’Try not to make it too flashy. I’d rather not become the brightest target down here.’
Gray’s electroreception flickered as their reflective skin swallowed his senses. Then both Rays lunged simultaneously, one from the left, one from above.
’Cindy!’
"[PHYSICAL BARRIER!]"
Light flared from the locket. Two barriers materialized in the water, one on Gray’s left, one directly above him. The Razorwing Rays slammed into them at full speed.
CRACK!
The sound was immense, a double impact that sent shockwaves rippling through the water. Both Rays bounced off the barriers, their reflective skin splintering along the points of impact. Gray could feel them now, their electrical signatures flickering into his perception.
’You’re getting better at this,’ Gray said, already launching toward the nearest Ray.
"Of course I am," Cindy replied, her voice bright despite the strain. "I’m a genius, remember?"
Gray’s crystalline barbs caught the left Ray’s wing as it tried to recover. The reflective layer shattered further, and the creature’s camouflage failed entirely. It was visible now, its silver body thrashing in the water.

He twisted toward the second Ray, already charging Cavitation Pulse. The superheated jet of water and crystal shrapnel shot forward, but the Ray banked away at the last moment.

"Then let me help," Cindy said.
A barrier materialized behind the Ray, cutting off its retreat. The creature veered sharply, and Gray fired again. This time, the pulse struck true.

The Ray’s reflective skin cracked further, its body flickering between visible and invisible. Gray pressed the attack, closing the distance with a burst of speed.

"Understood."
The barriers shifted and flowed, curving into a narrow corridor of silver-blue light that trapped both Rays inside. They thrashed against the walls, but the barriers held firm, leaving them with only one direction to move.
Gray dove in after them. The corridor closed tighter around his bell, forcing the three of them into a space where only one could move freely at a time.
’Let’s see how fast you are when there’s nowhere to run.’
The left Ray came at him without warning, a blur of silver in the narrow space. Gray stood his ground. Overcharge detonated from his bell, blue-white lightning branching through the water and turning the corridor into a cage of light. The Ray tried to twist, its reflective skin flaring as it deflected part of the blast, but the current was too close and too strong. Arcs bit into its flesh, and its sleek body seized, tumbling off course.

The Ray seized, its body locking rigid. Gray wrapped four tentacles around its body and squeezed. Grip Jaw activated, the crystalline barbs sinking into the Ray’s flesh as his grip tightened with bone-crushing force.

The second Ray attacked from behind, its wing slicing toward Gray’s exposed back. But a barrier flashed into place, and the creature bounced off harmlessly.
"Don’t forget about me," Cindy said.

Gray finished it with a point-blank Cavitation Pulse. The superheated jet ripped through the Ray’s damaged body, scattering crystal shards into the dark. The creature shuddered once, then went limp.

He turned to the second Ray. It was still trapped in the corridor, its reflective skin fractured and stuttering. It moved in short, panicked bursts, no longer circling with that cold precision. Gray could feel the shift in its rhythm. It wasn’t hunting anymore. It was trying to survive.
’You’re not used to being hunted, are you?’
He activated Abyssal Lance and shot forward. The Ray made a desperate attempt to dodge, its wings scraping against the barriers, but there was nowhere to run. The crystalline barbs tore through its body, and the creature jerked violently, pinned like a fish on a spear.

Overcharge detonated. The current ripped through the Ray, and its reflective skin, already fractured, gave way completely. It broke apart like thin ice, scattering silver fragments through the water as the electricity seared the flesh beneath.

Cavitation Pulse fired at point-blank range. The blast tore through the Ray’s body, scattering crystal shards and boiling water. It didn’t even have time to scream.

One final Overcharge. Gray’s bell flared white-blue, and the electricity surged through his tentacles in a single, violent burst. The current tore into the Ray’s body, lighting it from within, its wings snapping straight before falling slack.

The second Ray went still. Cindy’s barriers flickered and faded, leaving the two of them alone in the dark water with the drifting corpses.
Gray floated there, his bell heaving with slow, heavy contractions. The last sparks of electricity still flickered along his tentacles before fading into the dark. Around him, the water was thick with drifting shards of reflective skin and the faint taste of scorched flesh.
’We make a good team.’
Cindy’s voice came, tired but warm.
"Of course we do. I’m a genius, and you’re... adequate."
Gray let out a weak pulse that might have been a laugh.
’So modest.’
"Geniuses don’t need to be modest. It’s a waste of talent."
