Chapter 41: Exterminator

The crevice splintered further. Cracks spread through the volcanic rock like lightning, chunks of stone breaking away and tumbling down the slope. Through the widening gap, Gray could see the Broodmother’s massive head pressed against the opening, her oversized eyes swiveling independently before both locked onto him.

Those eyes burned with pure, undiluted fury.

’Uwahh... she looks really angry,’ Gray thought, his tentacles curling with a mix of fear and exhilaration.

The Broodmother’s jaws opened wide, revealing row after row of needle teeth. A roar erupted from her throat, deep and resonant, vibrating through the stone and into his very core. Her stripes blazed brilliant yellow-green, casting sickly shadows across the volcanic slope. She rammed her head against the crevice again, and more rock crumbled away.

"But too bad," Gray thought, deploying Neurotoxic Drift through the gap. The venom cloud drifted into the cavern, settling over her massive body. The damage ticks resumed. "You’re not getting away."

The Broodmother thrashed, her tail lashing against the cavern walls. More stalactites crumbled. More eels died in the crossfire, their small bodies succumbing to the venom that saturated the water. The EXP notifications cascaded through Gray’s vision.

"Blame yourself for trapping yourself in there," he thought, watching her rage uselessly against the stone. "You built your nest in a dead end. You made yourself a target."

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 510 / 850]

The Broodmother’s roar grew louder. She rammed the crevice again. Again. Again. Each impact sent cracks spider-webbing through the volcanic rock. Each impact widened the gap. Her eyes never left him — those massive, swiveling orbs locked onto his translucent form with murderous intent.

’She’s not stopping.’

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 473 / 850]

The crevice was wide enough now that he could see more of her body — the thick, muscular coils, the rows of dorsal spines glistening with venom, the stripes that pulsed with that sickly yellow-green light.

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 399 / 850]

The rock splintered further. The gap was almost wide enough for her head to squeeze through.

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 326 / 850]

The Broodmother’s thrashing intensified. Her stripes flared so bright they hurt to look at. Her roars became constant, the fury bleeding into agony with each passing second.

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 252 / 850]

She rammed the opening with everything she had.

The rock exploded outward.

Stone fragments shot through the water like shrapnel. Gray pulsed backward, slipping clear of the debris. And when the dust settled, she emerged.

The Broodmother’s full body uncoiled from the shattered crevice. Fifteen feet of sinuous muscle and pulsing bioluminescent stripes. Her dorsal spines stood erect, each one dripping with thick, viscous venom. Her oversized eyes swiveled independently, scanning the water, before both locked onto him.

She was larger than he’d realized. Even having seen her through the crevice, even having studied her from a distance, the reality of her size was overwhelming. Her head alone was nearly as large as his entire body. Her jaws could swallow him whole.

And she was staring directly at him with two hundred HP left and nothing to lose.

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 200 / 850]

Gray hovered in the open water, his eight tentacles spread wide, his body still humming with residual electricity.

’Finally, you came out,’ Gray thought, his tentacles curling with dark amusement. ’I thought you were too scared to face me.’

The Broodmother lunged.

Her massive body shot through the water with terrifying speed, jaws open wide, needle teeth gleaming. Gray pulsed sideways, barely carrying him out of her path. Her dorsal spines grazed his bell margin as she passed, and he felt the burn of her contact venom seeping into his translucent flesh.

[-18 HP]

[TOXIN — 6 damage over 6 seconds]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 327 / 345]

’Tch!’

The Broodmother wheeled around, her massive body coiling for another strike. Her stripes blazed. Her roar shook the water.

’This thing really wants to die,’ Gray thought, watching her prepare another charge. ’Fine. Let me help you with that.’

He activated Overcharge. Blue-white lightning erupted across his bell and through his tentacles, the electricity arcing through the water in brilliant, crackling patterns.

But the Broodmother didn’t flinch.

She charged directly into the electrical field. The current slammed into her body — fifty-eight damage, the numbers flashing bright red in Gray’s vision — but she didn’t stop. Her jaws closed around his bell margin, needle teeth sinking deep, her venomous spines raking across his translucent flesh.

[-45 HP]

[TOXIN — 12 damage over 10 seconds]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 282 / 345]

"Shit!" Gray’s thoughts exploded with pain and fury. "She’s trying to drag me down with her!"

The Broodmother thrashed, her jaws clamped tight, her massive body coiling around him. She was abandoning all defense, all self-preservation, every instinct except the one screaming at her to kill the creature that had murdered her children. Her stripes blazed. Her venom poured into the water, thick and viscous, a yellow-green cloud that surrounded them both.

Gray wrapped his tentacles around her throat and activated Overcharge again. The electricity arced directly into her open mouth, down her gullet, into her very core.

[OVERCHARGE — 61 DAMAGE]

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 96 / 850]

[STUN — 4 SECONDS]

Her jaws went slack. Her coils loosened. The stun had interrupted her death grip, and Gray tore himself free. His bell was lacerated, venom burning through his system, his HP ticking down with every second.

He deployed EMP Shroud. The silent electromagnetic pulse radiated outward, and Gray vanished from every sense the Broodmother possessed. Her electroreception went dark. Her lateral lines went blank.

The Broodmother went berserk.

She couldn’t sense him. Couldn’t find him. So she attacked everything. Her venom poured from her dorsal spines in thick, viscous clouds, spreading through the water in every direction. Her massive body thrashed wildly, tail lashing, jaws snapping at empty water. The yellow-green toxin saturated the area, a killing field that would have killed anything within twenty feet.

But Gray was already above her.

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The invisible venom cloud descended, settling over her thrashing body. The damage ticks resumed.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 19 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 18 DAMAGE]

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 59 / 850]

The EMP wore off. The Broodmother’s senses returned, and her eyes snapped upward. She found him hovering above her, his tentacles spread wide, his body sparking with electricity.

She lunged.

Gray didn’t dodge. He dove directly toward her.

Overcharge activated at point-blank range. The electricity erupted through his tentacles and into her open mouth, lighting her up from the inside. Her stripes flared brilliant white. Her roar cut off mid-throat. Her massive body convulsed one final time.

[OVERCHARGE — 59 DAMAGE]

[BROODMOTHER — HP: 0 / 850]

[BROODMOTHER DEFEATED — 850 EXP]

The Broodmother’s body went limp. Her massive coils drifted apart, her stripes fading from yellow-green to dull grey. Her oversized eyes, those terrifying orbs that had locked onto him with such fury, went glassy and dark.

Gray drifted above the massive corpse, his body still trembling with residual electricity and venom.

He absorbed her massive body slowly, his oral arms straining to process the dense, muscular flesh. The venom sacs along her dorsal spines dissolved against his feeding surface, and he felt the familiar warmth of new trait fragments settling into place.

[TOXIC RESILIENCE — Preview]

« Analysis »

A defensive trait derived from prolonged exposure to potent venoms. Your body has begun to develop natural resistance to toxic substances, reducing the duration and effectiveness of poison-based attacks against you.

Effect at Completion: 50% reduction in poison duration. 25% reduction in poison damage. Passive.

Gray hovered in the quiet water, the shattered remnants of the crevice below him, the Broodmother’s dissolving corpse beside him.

He checked his status.

’I need to rest,’ he thought, turning back toward the kelp forest. ’But first...’

He looked at the shattered crevice one final time.

’...that was worth it.’
