Chapter 12: The Jellyfish I Always Was
Gray drifted back into his shelter, the familiar walls of the crevice closing around him like a comforting blanket. The adrenaline of the hunt was fading, replaced by a deep, satisfying exhaustion. His bell still tingled from the Overcharge discharge, residual sparks flickering faintly along his tentacles before fading into the dark.
He let himself settle near the sandy bottom, his bioluminescence dimming to a soft, sleepy glow.
’Level 8 now. That fish gave me a solid chunk of EXP, another trait fragment, and the boulder field is now a mapped zone with a bonus. Not bad for a floating anxiety blob.’
He pulled up his status screen, the familiar golden text materializing in the darkness.

’Ten stat points and five skill points waiting to be spent. And that damn negative luck still staring at him from the bottom of the stat sheet like an uninvited guest.’
He was tired of it. That single negative number had loomed over every fight, every encounter, every moment of fragile peace. The lamprey. The swarm. The sentinel. Maybe none of it was his fault. Maybe the universe really had been rigged against him. Either way, he was fixing it now.
’Negative five luck means the universe is still actively trying to kill me. Just... slightly less creatively than before.’
He opened the stat allocation menu. Five points hovered in his mind, ready to be assigned.
’Let’s fix this first.’
Five points into LUK.
[LUK: -5 → 0]
[Critical failure chance: Neutralized.]
[Karmic balance: Neutral. The universe no longer has a personal vendetta against you.]
Gray stared at the notification for a long moment.
’...What do you mean, personal vendetta? The universe had a grudge against me? Well, it’s over now. I’m finally normal.’
After two deaths, a negative karmic balance, and a week of being the universe’s punching bag, normal felt like winning the lottery.
’Okay. Five points left.’
He reviewed his stats.
’My damage comes from skills, not physical attacks. Toxin Cloud scales with... actually, I don’t know what it scales with. Overcharge is INT-based. My stings are ATK-based but I barely use them anymore now that I have Toxin Cloud.’
He thought about the Barefin Hunter fight. The thing that had almost killed him wasn’t lack of damage. It was getting hit. Twenty-two damage through eleven DEF. If he’d been slower, if he hadn’t dodged that vertical ambush, the fight would have ended very differently.
’I can’t afford to get hit. And if I do get hit, I need to survive it.’
Three points into DEF.
[DEF: 11 → 14]
[HP: 170 → 200]
Two points into SPD.
[SPD: 12 → 14]
He confirmed the allocation and pulled up his updated status.

’Not the most exciting build. But it was a good start.’
He dismissed the status screen and let his tentacles spread across the sandy floor. The shelter was quiet. The distant rumble of the ocean had faded to a low, constant hum. For the first time since waking up in this body, Gray felt something close to peace.
His thoughts drifted back to his human life.
’I wonder if anyone noticed I was gone.’
The thought came unbidden, rising from somewhere deep in his reconstructed consciousness. He’d had no family. No close friends. No one who would report him missing. His landlord might notice the unpaid rent eventually. His boss might be annoyed about the unfilled shift. But grief? Mourning? The kind of ache that hollowed out a person’s chest when someone they loved was gone?
No. There was no one who would feel that for him.
’I was a jellyfish long before I became one. Just drifting. No direction. No connections. No purpose.’
His bioluminescence pulsed softly in the dark.
’Maybe that’s why the system gave me this form. It wasn’t punishment. It was honesty. The universe looked at my life and said, "Yeah, this one’s a jellyfish. Always has been."’
The soft glow of his bioluminescence rippled across the crevice walls, pink and blue chasing each other in lazy waves. Gray watched the light for a moment, then let out a pulse that wasn’t physical, more like a mental exhale, a deliberate release of tension he’d been holding since the reincarnation.
’Alright. No more moping. The past is the past. I can’t change who I was. But I can change who I’m becoming.’
He pulled up his status.
[HP: 200 out of 200]
[MP: 170 out of 170]
The shelter’s regeneration bonus had done its work while he rested. His bell felt solid, his tentacles coiled and ready, the lingering fatigue from the hunter fight completely gone. The wound scars had faded to near-invisibility. He was, by every measure that mattered, at full strength.
’This shelter is really useful.’
He drifted to the crevice entrance and peered out into the dark water. The boulder field stretched before him, its familiar rock formations now mapped and tagged with that sweet five percent EXP bonus.
The kelp forest waited beyond the boulder field, its fronds swaying with quiet patience. Somewhere past that, monsters he hadn’t yet seen. EXP he hadn’t yet earned. Fragments of a future self he couldn’t yet imagine.
’I need to hit Level 10. Two more levels. Then evolution.’
His Bioluminescent Pulse flickered, casting pink and blue shadows across the rocks. Once, he’d cursed it—a beacon he couldn’t dim, a target painted on his back. Now it was a lure. Curiosity brought prey close. And close meant dead.
’Hunting time.’
He pulsed out of the crevice and into the open water.
