Chapter 61: Aegis Pearl
The system’s warning flared through Gray’s consciousness like a cold spike.

[Attempting to establish connection with host consciousness...]
Gray’s bell convulsed. His tentacles shot toward the silver chain around his bell, already beginning to pull it off—
"Stay cool."
The woman’s voice came from inside his own mind now, no longer echoing through the water but resonating directly in his thoughts. It was intimate in a way that made his skin crawl.
"I’m only attached to you temporarily. Think of me as a parasite living in your body."
A cold thread of alarm slithered through Gray’s thoughts.
’Don’t joke about that. That’s even more terrifying. I don’t want a parasite in my body.’
A quiet laugh threaded through Gray’s awareness, musical and strange.
"I’m only ensuring the jellyfish doesn’t betray me. If you betray me... I can possess you instantly."
Gray’s tentacles tightened around the chain, but he didn’t pull it off.
’I won’t abandon you. So don’t do that. And wait — we can communicate now?’
"Yes. Because I’m in your mind now, we can speak freely. Though I didn’t expect you to be this intelligent. You communicate like a rational creature."
Gray felt a flicker of pride despite himself.
’That’s because I’m a different kind of jellyfish.’
"Hmm... It seems you have secrets." Her words curled at the edges, sharpened by curiosity and quiet threat. "I could simply enter your mind and find them myself."
Gray’s response was immediate and cold.
’No. Don’t do that. If you try, I’ll kill myself before you can take control. You won’t get my body.’
"That’s very brave," she said. "But don’t you want to survive? Are you really willing to throw away your chance to live?"
’This is a bargain,’ Gray replied. ’We escape from here together. No hostility between us. If either of us breaks the deal... it’s over.’
"Your clever mind makes me very curious," she admitted. "But for the sake of our survival... fine. I won’t peek into your thoughts."
’Good. Then we have an agreement.’ Determination surged through him, sharpening his senses and steadying his form. ’So what’s your plan?’
Her voice shifted, sharpening into cold, practical focus.
"Near the helm of the ship, there’s a bag containing an item that can create a barrier. It grants temporary immunity. I died because I was too slow to retrieve it. But you can swim. If we reach the weakest point of this monster and use the item, we can escape from here."
Gray’s tentacles swept the ship’s interior, already searching for the helm.
’A bag near the helm. Got it. Let’s move.’
He pushed off from the keel, his bell pulsing weakly but steadily. The acid swirled around him, thick and burning, but he forced himself forward through the ruined ship’s interior. The woman’s voice guided him, soft and certain in his mind.
"Turn left. Through that doorway. The helm is just ahead."
He followed her directions, weaving through the cramped corridors of the sunken vessel.
The helm room opened before him, a small chamber lit by the faint glow of his own failing bioluminescence. The ship’s wheel stood at the center, its wood cracked and blackened. And there, slumped against the base of the wheel, was another skeleton. Its bony fingers still rested on the lid of a small chest, its surface already slick with stomach acid but barely touched by corrosion.
"Quickly. Open the chest."
Gray reached for it with trembling tentacles, the chest strangely cool against his burning flesh. He wrapped two tentacles around the lid and pulled.
Inside was a single item: a palm-sized crystal sphere that pulsed with a soft, silver-blue light. It looked almost fragile, but when he touched it, he felt a surge of power ripple through his tentacles.

A rare protective artifact. When activated, the Aegis Pearl generates a temporary barrier around the user that nullifies all damage for 60 seconds. The barrier is absolute — no physical, elemental, or psychic attack can penetrate it while active. Single use. Consumed upon activation.
’Sixty seconds of total invulnerability...’
"Now listen carefully," the woman’s voice said. "The monster’s stomach acid is strongest near the center of its belly. But the weakest point is at the base of its throat, where the tissue is thinner. If you can reach it and activate the pearl, the barrier will protect you while I guide you through the rest."
Gray looked upward. The throat valve loomed far above, a tight, fleshy seal that had closed behind him when he was swallowed. Even with the barrier, forcing it open from inside would be nearly impossible.
’...And if the pearl’s barrier can’t push through that valve?’
The woman was silent for a moment.
"Then we’ll think of something else. But first, you need to survive long enough to reach it. Now go."
Gray swam upward through the churning acid, his bell pulsing with everything he had left.
The woman’s voice returned, calmer now.
"I realize I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Cindy Maxwell. A pleasure to meet you properly." She paused. "What’s yours?"
Gray’s tentacles pushed against the acid, each pulse weaker than the last.
’Gray Ashford.’
"Gray Ashford..." She repeated the name slowly. "You have a surname too. Were you once a creature of reason?"
Gray’s thoughts tightened.
’Don’t ask sensitive questions. Are you trying to break your promise?’
Cindy laughed softly.
"I’m only asking a little. Don’t be so angry."
’I’m not angry.’
"Good. Then you won’t mind if I ask about your strongest attack? We’ll need it to break through. Or... do you not have one?"
’Of course I have one. I’ll use it when we get there. But you seem to know a lot about this monster.’
An old bitterness colored Cindy’s voice.
"I was assigned to hunt this monster. But I was swallowed alive."
’That explains your knowledge. But it wasn’t enough to kill it.’
"True. I prepared so much... and still failed. It’s infuriating."
Gray glanced at his HP bar. The number made his bell tighten.

’I’m not going to last much longer.’
Cindy’s voice sharpened.
"Then swallow the item. Now."
’Isn’t the target still far?’
"If you die, everything is wasted."
Gray pushed the doubt aside and obeyed. The Aegis Pearl still rested in the curl of one tentacle, its silver-blue glow pulsing faintly. He pressed it to his feeding surface and swallowed.
The effect was immediate. A shimmering barrier erupted around his body, pushing the acid away like oil separating from water. The burning stopped, the corrosive weight lifted, and his HP bar finally held still as the constant drain of damage faded into stillness.

Gray let out a long, shuddering pulse of relief.
’It’s gone. The pain is gone...’
Cindy’s voice came again, smug.
"That item was very expensive. You should feel honored to have tasted it."
Gray’s tentacles flexed, testing the barrier’s limits. The acid slid harmlessly off the shimmering surface.
’I’m honored. Now where do we go?’
"Almost there. Keep swimming."
He pulsed upward with renewed strength, the barrier parting the acid before him like a blade. The throat valve grew larger with every stroke. Gray could see the folds of muscle now, the pulsing tissue, the faint shimmer of digestive fluids leaking through the seal.
"Stop here," Cindy commanded.
Gray halted just below the valve. Up close, the tissue was thick and muscular, ringed with what looked like cartilage.
"Look for a section where the tissue is thinner — a seam in the muscle, or an old wound.I injured this area once, so there should be a scar somewhere. Aim for that."
Gray extended his tentacles, pressing them against the valve. The barrier shimmered where it touched the flesh, but he could still feel the texture through it. He swept his tentacles across the surface, searching and found it.
A patch of tissue near the left side of the valve. It was paler than the surrounding flesh, smooth where everything else was ridged.
’Found it. I’ll blow it open.’
Cindy’s voice was tense with anticipation.
"Do it quickly. The barrier won’t last forever."
Gray pulled his tentacles back, positioning himself directly below the scar. He gathered every spark of bioelectric energy left in his body, the Aegis Pearl’s barrier humming around him like a second skin. The crystalline barbs along his tentacles aligned, clicking together like the chambers of a loaded weapon.
’Cindy,’ he said, his mental voice calm and steady. ’Hold on.’
He activated Overcharge first. The bioelectric organ in his bell convulsed, releasing every stored volt in a single, roaring surge. Blue-white lightning erupted through the water inside the barrier, arcing from tentacle to tentacle, illuminating the fleshy cavern in stark, crackling light. The acid around him boiled where the current passed, spiraling upward in superheated streams.
Then Abyssal Lance. His body compressed, muscles locking, crystalline barbs aligning along his frame like the segments of a living spear. The electric arcs bent inward, coiling around the barbs and lending them an edge of crackling heat. For a heartbeat he hung there, a spear of translucent armor and stormfire aimed straight at the scar.
And then Cavitation Pulse. The crystalline structures along his bell superheated the water trapped between them until it flashed into a jet of boiling liquid and molten crystal. It merged with the lance in the instant before release—a concentrated spear of lightning, shrapnel, and superheated water.
The combined force struck the scar tissue dead center.
