The SSS-Rank Jellyfish's Growth System

Chapter 27: Spectral Drifter

Gray stared at the three panels, his thoughts churning. The Deep Luminary promised control, the ability to bend minds and make prey walk willingly into his grasp. The Shock Titan promised raw power, a living storm that nothing would dare touch.

But as he looked at his accumulated traits, the answer became clearer.

Every trait he’d earned, every fragment he’d bled for, pointed in the same direction. He wasn’t built for psychic manipulation or overwhelming electrical dominance. He was built to survive, to sense danger, to evade threats, to hunt silently.

’Spectral Drifter. All my traits support it. Shell Plating gives me enough durability to survive if something does find me. Keen Senses and Electroreceptive Sensitivity make me better at detecting threats before they detect me. Minor Evasion and Reactive Agility help me escape if stealth fails. This is the build my traits were made for.’

He looked at the three panels one last time. The choice had already been made.

’I choose Path 3. Spectral Drifter.’

The system chimed softly.

[EVOLUTION SELECTED: SPECTRAL DRIFTER — ABYSSAL AURELIA VARIANT]

[Are you certain? This choice is permanent and will determine your growth path until the next evolution threshold.]

Gray didn’t hesitate.

’Yes. I’m certain.’

The confirmation pulse rippled through the water, a soft chime that vibrated in his very core. Then the world dissolved.

The pain came first. A fundamental ache that seemed to come from every cell in his body simultaneously. His bell convulsed, the familiar pink-blue-violet glow flickering erratically like a dying lightbulb. The Bioluminescent Pulse that had been his constant companion since waking in this ocean was fading. Being snuffed out cell by cell.

His body began to unravel.

It started at the edges of his bell margin, the translucent flesh losing cohesion and drifting apart in fine, shimmering threads. His tentacles followed, the four familiar appendages dissolving into a cloud of cellular matter that hung in the water around him like a constellation of dying stars. The nematocysts along his feeding surface detached and floated away, each one a tiny spark of potential waiting to be reshaped.

Gray felt himself scattering. His consciousness, which had been anchored to a single gelatinous form, was suddenly distributed across a thousand drifting fragments. He was dying and being born simultaneously.

’So this is evolution.’

The pain intensified. His very DNA was being rewritten, the fundamental code of his existence edited by a system that understood biology better than nature itself. The Aurelia aurita genome that had defined him was being overwritten by something new.

Traits activated in sequence.

[Minor Shell Plating — Integrated. Structural integrity enhanced.]

His bell solidified. A molecular reinforcement that would turn aside glancing blows without adding weight or bulk.

[Keen Senses — Integrated. Sensory perception enhanced.]

His tentacles, still in their dispersed state, grew more sensitive. The vibration-reading cells multiplied, their resolution sharpening.

[Minor Evasion — Integrated. Reaction speed and agility enhanced.]

His muscle fibers reconfigured themselves. The slow, rhythmic pulsing of his old form gave way to something more efficient. More precise. He would be faster now.

[Electroreceptive Sensitivity — Integrated. Bioelectric perception enhanced.]

The world bloomed into a new dimension of awareness. He could feel the electrical fields of every creature within a hundred meters.

The Bioluminescent Pulse died completely.

Darkness swallowed him. Absolute black. The kind of dark that existed only in the spaces between stars.

His new senses painted the world in richer detail than light ever had. Vibrations told him where things were. Electrical fields told him what they were. The ocean had become a symphony of information, and he was listening to every note.

Then the reconstruction began.

The fragments of his old body drew back together, but they didn’t reform into the shape he knew. The bell was thinner now, more streamlined, its surface so transparent that it was barely distinguishable from the water around it. The tentacles were longer, finer, more numerous — eight instead of four, each one delicate as silk and nearly invisible. His feeding arms retracted into a more compact, efficient form beneath the bell.

The system chimed.

[EVOLUTION COMPLETE]

[Welcome, Spectral Drifter.]

Gray Ashford opened his senses to the ocean and found it transformed.

He pulled up his new status.

· Minor Evasion — Enhanced

· Electroreceptive Sensitivity — Enhanced

Traits (Pending):

· Reactive Agility (1/3)

Skills:

· [Hollow Cloak] (Passive) Lv. 1

· [Neurotoxic Drift] Lv. 1

· [Overcharge] Lv. 2

· [EMP Shroud] Lv. 1

’Now I’ve seen the full potential of this build. Time to commit.’

He opened the allocation menu.

STAT POINTS: 10

’I’m not a tank. I’m not a mage. I’m an assassin. Speed first. Then intelligence for skill damage and MP. Defense last — it’s insurance, not my primary survival tool.’

Five points into SPD.

[SPD: 34 → 39]

Three points into INT.

[INT: 35 → 38]

[MP: 270 → 300]

Two points into DEF.

[DEF: 24 → 26]

[HP: 325 → 345]

’SPD thirty-nine. I’m more than twice as fast as I was before evolution. INT thirty-eight boosts Neurotoxic Drift and EMP Shroud. DEF twenty-six gives me a little more padding. Three-forty-five HP. Not a tank, but not made of glass either.’

He confirmed the allocation and moved to skills.

SKILL POINTS: 6

He pulled up his four skills.

· [Hollow Cloak] (Passive) Lv. 1 — Permanent transparency. Suppresses visual detection.

· [Neurotoxic Drift] Lv. 1 — Invisible, silent venom cloud. Delayed symptom manifestation.

· [Overcharge] Lv. 2 — Contact-based electrical burst. High damage, stun chance.

· [EMP Shroud] Lv. 1 — Silent electromagnetic pulse. 4-second sensory blackout, 4-meter radius. 20 MP, 90-second cooldown.

’EMP Shroud is my panic button. If stealth breaks, I pop it and vanish. But the cooldown is long — ninety seconds is an eternity in a fight. First priority: reduce that cooldown.’

Two points into EMP Shroud.

[EMP SHROUD — Lv. 1 → Lv. 3]

[Cooldown: 90 seconds → 60 seconds]

[Duration: 4 seconds → 6 seconds]

[MP Cost: 20 → 15]

Two points into Neurotoxic Drift.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — Lv. 1 → Lv. 3]

[Damage per second: 4-6 → 8-12]

[Paralyze chance: 10% → 18%]

[Symptom delay: 3 seconds → 2 seconds]

[MP Cost: 10 → 12]

Two points into Hollow Cloak.

[HOLLOW CLOAK — Lv. 1 → Lv. 3]

[Transparency: 85% → 97%]

[Detection range vs. sight-based predators: reduced by 40% → reduced by 70%]

[Detection range vs. vibration-based predators: reduced by 15% → reduced by 30%]

[Detection range vs. electroreceptive predators: reduced by 10% → reduced by 25%]

He confirmed all allocations and pulled up his final status.

Gray closed the status window. The changes settled into his body like they’d always been there — faster reflexes, sharper senses, a deeper well of power humming beneath his translucent flesh.

He extended his eight new tentacles into the dark water. The kelp forest stretched before him, dense and deep and full of creatures that would never see him coming.

’Let’s find out what this new body can do.’
