His electroreception picked up nothing but the faint static of distant thermal vents. The water was colder than usual and the silence felt deliberate, as if even the smallest creatures were holding their breath. Gray slowed his pulse, letting his tentacles brush against the sediment as he moved.

’Maybe when I’m Level 50 or higher, I can finally leave this dark place,’ he thought, his tentacles sweeping the water ahead. ’But it probably won’t be that easy.’

He pulsed forward, his senses mapping the familiar terrain. The glowing forest was behind him now. The black sand field stretched into darkness ahead, broken only by scattered volcanic boulders and the occasional cluster of tube worms.

Then he saw it.

A flash of crimson in the darkness. The creature moved with a confident, almost arrogant grace — its body cutting through the water like a blade through silk.

It was a fish. Sleek and muscular, maybe three feet long, its body covered in scales of deep, brilliant red that seemed to glow with their own inner light. Its fins were long and sharp — the dorsal fin a serrated blade running the length of its spine, the pectoral fins swept back like scythes. Its tail was broad and powerful, each stroke propelling it through the water with effortless speed.

Its eyes burned a fearless gold, set in a face that seemed built for confrontation.

[CRIMSON BLADE SCALE — Level 24]

HP: 340 / 340

Threat Level: MODERATE

« Analysis »

A highly aggressive predatory fish found in the mid-to-deep regions of the Abyssal Veil. The Crimson Blade Scale is known for its exceptional speed and razor-sharp fins, which it uses to slash prey into manageable pieces. Its scales are dense and overlapping, providing moderate protection against physical attacks.

Behavior: Unusually bold for a mid-sized predator. The Crimson Blade Scale does not flee from larger creatures — it perceives almost everything as a challenge. This aggression, combined with its speed and bladed fins, makes it a surprisingly dangerous opponent despite its moderate size.

Weakness: Its aggressive nature can be exploited. It will commit to attacks without considering retreat, leaving itself open to counterattack. Its gill plates are less armored than the rest of its body.

Gray watched the fish circle through the darkness, its crimson scales flashing like embers in the black water.

’That’s a beautiful fish,’ he thought, his crystalline barbs clicking with interest. ’And it doesn’t run from anything... which means it won’t run from me.’

He drifted closer, The Crimson Blade Scale continued its patrol, unaware of the translucent predator shadowing its movements. Its golden eyes swept the water with that same fearless intensity.

Gray’s tentacles spread wide, electricity sparking faintly along their length.

’Let’s see how confident it is when I’m the one hunting it.’

He positioned himself above the fish, matching its speed with ease. His crystalline barbs caught the crimson glow of its scales and scattered it like fragments of a dying star.

’Let’s see how strong you are.’

He dropped the Hollow Cloak.

His body materialized from the darkness directly in the Crimson Blade Scale’s path. His eight tentacles fanned out around him, crystalline barbs glinting. His bell pulsed with contained energy, the bioelectric organ beneath his armor humming with barely restrained power.

The Crimson Blade Scale’s golden eyes locked onto him.

For a moment, the fish simply stopped. Its body went still, its gill plates flaring as it assessed the creature that had dared to block its path. The crimson scales seemed to pulse brighter, as if the fish’s blood itself was responding to the challenge.

Then its mouth opened, revealing rows of small, needle-sharp teeth, and its fins snapped outward in a threat display.

It wasn’t afraid.

It was thrilled.

The Crimson Blade Scale charged.

The crimson fish shot through the water like a living blade, its serrated dorsal fin slicing toward Gray’s bell. 135 SPD carried him sideways, but the fish was fast — nearly as fast as he was. Its razor-sharp pectoral fin grazed his crystalline armor, sending a shower of sparks through the water.

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 676 / 690]

’It’s quick.’

The Blade Scale wheeled around, golden eyes blazing with excitement. It charged again, this time feinting left before slashing right. Predator’s Instinct read the attack before it came — Gray pulsed backward, letting the fish’s serrated fin pass inches from his bell.

’Let’s test the waters.’

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The venom cloud billowed outward, invisible and silent. The Blade Scale shot straight through it without hesitation. The venom seeped through its gill plates, into the gaps between its crimson scales.

[PARALYZE — RESISTED]

The fish didn’t slow. It didn’t flinch. The venom was in its system, but its aggression burned hotter than any toxin. It charged again, faster this time, its bladed fins leaving glowing trails in the dark water.

Gray met it head-on.

Abyssal Lance activated. His body compressed into a spearhead of crystalline barbs, and he launched. The Blade Scale tried to dodge, but Predator’s Instinct had already predicted its movement. The crystalline barbs impaled the fish’s flank, punching through its dense scales.

[50% DEF PENETRATION — APPLIED]

The Blade Scale shrieked — a high, piercing sound that cut through the water like its fins cut through flesh. But even impaled, it didn’t retreat. Its tail lashed, its serrated dorsal fin slashing across Gray’s bell in a spray of sparks.

[VENOMOUS RIPOSTE — ACTIVATED]

[TOXIN VULNERABILITY — APPLIED]

The venom-tipped spines along Gray’s margin lashed out automatically, injecting concentrated neurotoxin into the wound. The Blade Scale convulsed, its golden eyes flickering with pain.

’There it is. Now you’re feeling it.’

He wrapped four tentacles around the fish’s body and activated Grip Jaw. The muscular appendages locked tight, crystalline barbs digging deep into the gaps between its scales.

The Blade Scale thrashed in his grip, its bladed fins slicing at anything they could reach. One caught his tentacle, drawing a thin line of translucent blood.

’I’ll return it tenfold.’

Overcharge detonated.

[STUN — 5 SECONDS]

The Blade Scale seized. Its golden eyes went wide, the fearless light in them flickering like a candle in a storm. For five full seconds, it hung limp in his grip, completely vulnerable.

Gray squeezed harder. Neurotoxic Drift poured into its wounds.

The stun broke and it tried to flee. Its powerful tail lashed, its fins swept back, and it shot toward open water with desperate speed. But Grip Jaw held firm. The crystalline barbs dug deeper. There was no escape.

He released Grip Jaw, letting the wounded fish drift a few feet away. It turned to face him, its golden eyes dimming, its crimson scales dull with blood loss and venom.

’You weren’t brave. You were just too stupid to know when you were outmatched.’

He activated Cavitation Pulse. The superheated jet of water and crystal shrapnel struck the Blade Scale’s gill plates, the one gap in its armor that Predator’s Instinct had identified.

[CAVITATION PULSE — 54 DAMAGE]

[CRIMSON BLADE SCALE — HP: 0 / 340]

[CRIMSON BLADE SCALE DEFEATED — 450 EXP]

The fish went limp. Its crimson scales, once so brilliant, faded to a dull rust-red as it drifted toward the black sand below.

Gray absorbed the corpse slowly, his oral arms processing the dense, muscular flesh. The taste was sharp and metallic, like blood and iron.

[New Trait Discovered!]

[BLADE FIN EDGE — Preview]

« Analysis »

A rare offensive trait derived from creatures with razor-sharp natural weapons. Enhances the user’s physical attacks by adding a cutting component that can bypass light armor.

Effect at Completion: All physical attacks deal +15% bonus slashing damage. Grants a new active skill — [Blade Sweep]. A wide-area physical attack that strikes all enemies within 3 meters. Damage scales with ATK.

Gray studied the notification, his tentacles curling with satisfaction.

’Blade Fin Edge. Another physical damage option and an area attack — something I’ve been missing.’

Gray was still processing the taste of the Crimson Blade Scale when the vibration hit him.

A faint tremor in the water, like a distant current shifting. His crystalline barbs clicked softly, and Predator’s Instinct pulsed a warning through his nerves. He turned slowly, scanning the darkness with every sense at his disposal.

Nothing. The black sand field stretched in every direction, empty and still.

’Where is it...?’

He extended his tentacles to their full length, reading the water for any sign of disturbance. His electroreception swept the area. His vibration detection strained for the faintest ripple. But there was nothing.

Then the water above him moved.

He looked up.

And his world became teeth.

A massive jaw descended from the darkness, a circular cavern of serrated white enamel that stretched wider than his entire body. Rows upon rows of teeth spiraled inward, each one as long as his tentacles, each one curved backward toward a throat that pulsed with hungry, muscular contractions. The creature had come from directly above — rising from the abyss like death itself, silent and vast and absolutely inevitable.

’HOLY SHIT—’

He pulsed backward with everything he had, 135 SPD screaming through his bell. But the jaw was already closing. The teeth were already descending. The water itself seemed to pull him inward, a current created by the creature’s massive maw opening to swallow.

He tried to dive. The teeth caught his bell.

[-120 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 570 / 690]

Pain detonated through his body. His crystalline armor cracked in three places. His tentacles were forced inward, pressed against his bell as the jaw sealed shut.

The teeth interlocked above and below him, forming a cage of serrated bone. He was inside the creature’s mouth, trapped in the space between its teeth and its throat. The water here was warm and acidic, stinging against his lacerated flesh.

’No no no NO—’

He thrashed, his crystalline barbs scraping against the creature’s palate. He deployed Neurotoxic Drift at maximum concentration, flooding the mouth with venom. The creature didn’t even flinch.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 18 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 19 DAMAGE]

[??? — HP: ??? / ???]

The damage ticks registered, but the numbers were meaningless against the vastness of whatever had swallowed him. He activated Overcharge. Electricity erupted through the water, arcing into the creature’s flesh.

[OVERCHARGE — 84 DAMAGE]

[??? — HP: ??? / ???]

The creature’s throat convulsed. The muscles contracted, and Gray felt himself being pulled downward into the fleshy tunnel of the esophagus. The walls pressed in from all sides, thick and muscular, rippling with peristaltic waves that dragged him deeper.

’No! Let go of me, you—’

He activated Abyssal Lance. His body compressed, crystalline barbs aligning — but there was no room to launch. The throat walls were too tight. The barbs scraped uselessly against the slick, muscular tissue.

’Fuck!’

The throat constricted harder. Gray’s bell compressed, his crystalline armor groaning under the pressure.

He tried to deploy Grip Jaw, to anchor himself against the throat walls. His tentacles wrapped around a ridge of tissue and squeezed. For a moment, he held. The peristaltic waves pushed against him, but his grip remained firm.

Then the creature swallowed again.

The muscles around him convulsed with impossible force. Gray’s grip tore free, and he tumbled downward into a wider space — a cavern of acid and half-dissolved remains.

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 525 / 690]

The acid burned. It seeped through the cracks in his crystalline armor, ate at his tentacles, stung his bell and oral arms. Every surface of his body was screaming.

He floated in the stomach of the beast, surrounded by the dissolving remains of its previous meals. The acid rose around him, thick and churning, lit only by the faint bioluminescence of his own dying light.

’Ah... this is bad...’

His HP ticked down steadily.

He looked up at the throat he’d just fallen through, already sealing shut above him.

’How do I get out of this one...?’
