Chapter 70: Undying Heart
The ink cloud was beginning to thin, its edges fraying into the surrounding water like smoke in a slow current.
The Reef Kraken still twitching from the Overcharge.
"This fight is amazing!" Cindy said. "It’s like watching familiars battle each other!"
Gray’s tentacles twitched with irritation.
’You’re too noisy! I’m trying to focus.’
Cindy made a small, indignant sound. "I’m just saying it’s impressive! That octopus should be dead by now, but it’s still moving."
Gray watched the Kraken’s arms begin to coil again, the suckers flexing as the creature regained control of its body. The head wound was still leaking pale fluid into the water, and the burn marks from Overcharge traced blackened lines across its flesh. By all logic, it should have collapsed already.
’This octopus might have a skill related to its hearts,’ Gray thought.
Cindy’s voice sharpened with curiosity. "Hearts? What do you mean?"
’Octopuses have three hearts,’ Gray replied, his tentacles already shifting into a defensive formation. ’Two branchial hearts and one systemic heart. If it has a skill that lets it keep fighting even after taking fatal damage... maybe it’s because of that.’
Cindy was quiet for a moment. "So it’s like... it has backups? If one heart stops, the others keep working?"
’Something like that.’ Gray studied the Kraken as it pulled its arms inward, coiling them around its wounded head like a living shield. ’But it’s strange. The other octopus I fought wasn’t like this. It was smaller, but it relied on elemental attacks and hit-and-run tactics. This one just keeps coming. It doesn’t matter how much damage I deal — it won’t stop.’
Cindy’s voice dropped to a whisper, uneasy now. "That’s not normal. It’s like it doesn’t feel pain anymore."
Gray felt a chill run through his bell.
’Yeah,’ he said quietly. ’Like a living corpse.’
The Reef Kraken surged forward, its massive arms spreading wide in an intimidation display. Its golden eyes blazed with cold, mechanical fury. The bioluminescent suckers pulsed in rhythmic waves, making its limbs seem larger, more numerous.
Gray pulsed backward, keeping his distance.
’Overcharge is still on cooldown,’ he thought. ’If it wraps me up now, I’m in serious trouble.’
Cindy’s voice came, tense but focused. "Then we need to find its weakness. Something that will actually kill it."
’That might be difficult,’ Gray replied, weaving between two coral spires as a tentacle lashed past him. ’Since I have to keep dodging at the same time.’
The Kraken’s arms swept through the water like living pillars, each one thick enough to crush stone. One caught the edge of a coral formation and shattered it.
"Then stall for time!" Cindy urged. "Hide among the rocks, use hit-and-run tactics. You’re faster than it is!"
’That’s an interesting idea.’
A tentacle shot toward him from the right. Gray pulsed upward at the last moment, feeling the suckers graze his bell margin. The arm slammed into the seafloor behind him, sending up a cloud of black sand.
’Too close.’
He angled toward the coral maze, where the spires rose like broken towers. The gaps between them were narrow, and the Kraken’s massive body would struggle to navigate the tight passages. Gray slipped through a gap barely wide enough for his bell, the coral scraping against his armor.
Behind him, the Kraken’s arms probed the entrance, reaching through the gaps like searching fingers. Its golden eyes peered through the coral, still locked onto him with that cold, relentless focus.
’This octopus really holds a grudge against me,’ Gray thought.
"Of course it does. You’ve been making it look like a fool."
The Kraken’s arms began to snake through the coral maze, sliding between spires and around pillars. They moved with terrifying precision, each limb navigating independently, cutting off Gray’s escape routes one by one.
Gray deployed Cavitation Pulse, aiming through a gap between two coral towers. The superheated jet of water and crystal shrapnel shot through the opening and slammed into the Kraken’s mantle, tearing a ragged wound through the soft flesh.
[CAVITATION PULSE — 52 DAMAGE]
[REEF KRAKEN — HP: 229 / 480]
The Kraken convulsed, its arms retracting slightly. But it didn’t stop. The wound leaked pale fluid into the water, and the creature kept coming, its golden eyes still burning with that terrible, unfeeling determination.
"It’s still moving," Cindy breathed. "Gray... what if its hearts are in its arms?"
Gray stopped short. The thought was disturbing but it made sense. If the systemic heart was distributed, or if each arm contained auxiliary circulatory structures, then no single body wound would be fatal. The creature would keep fighting as long as even one arm remained functional.
’Then I have to destroy the arms,’ he said. ’All of them or at least enough to shut it down.’
Cindy’s voice was grim. "Can you do that?"
Gray watched the tentacles slither through the coral maze, each one a potential heart, each one a weapon.
’I don’t have a choice,’ he said. ’Let’s start cutting.’
He deployed Neurotoxic Drift, flooding the water behind him with venom. The toxic cloud spread through the maze, invisible and silent. But the Kraken’s golden eyes narrowed, and its arms shifted, flowing around the poisoned water with deliberate care.
’It noticed,’ Cindy said. ’It’s avoiding the toxin now.’
’I expected that.’
He’d already prepared the real attack. The Kraken was so focused on the venom cloud that it had stopped guarding its other flank. Gray’s body compressed, crystalline barbs aligning along his frame like the segments of a spear.
[ABYSSAL LANCE — ACTIVATED]
The Kraken’s golden eyes snapped toward him at the last moment, but it was already too late. The crystalline barbs tore through the creature’s head, punching through the soft mantle and out the other side. Two of its arms were severed in the same strike, their suckers still pulsing as they drifted to the sand.
[ABYSSAL LANCE — 118 DAMAGE]
[CRITICAL HIT — HEAD DESTROYED]
[REEF KRAKEN — HP: 111 / 480]
[STATUS: CRITICAL — MULTIPLE LIMBS SEVERED]
The Kraken’s body went rigid. Its remaining arms twitched and curled, the golden eyes dimming as the light behind them guttered.
’This ends here.’
Overcharge came off cooldown. Gray detonated it at point-blank range, pressing his tentacles against the creature’s ruined head. Blue-white lightning surged through its body, lighting it from within.
[OVERCHARGE — 88 DAMAGE]
[REEF KRAKEN — HP: 23 / 480]
The Kraken convulsed one final time. Its arms went limp, its body beginning to sink toward the seafloor. Gray hovered above it, watching the last of its health tick away.
’It’s over.’
Then he heard it.
Dug....Dug.....Dug...
A heartbeat.
It started as a faint thrum at the edge of his perception, barely audible over the ambient current. But it grew louder and faster.
DAG-DAG-DAG-DAG!
His tentacles went rigid. ’What the...’
The sound was coming from inside the Kraken’s broken body. The tissues were already beginning to knit themselves back together. The severed arms twitched, their suckers pulsing with renewed light. The destroyed head was regenerating, the flesh flowing back into place like water filling a vessel.
[REGENERATION — ACTIVATED]
[Trait Detected: Undying Heart]
[Effect: Upon taking lethal damage, the Reef Kraken enters a regenerative state. All wounds heal rapidly until HP is fully restored.]
[REEF KRAKEN — HP: 23 → 480]
[REGENERATION COMPLETE]
The Kraken’s golden eyes snapped open. They locked onto Gray with a furious glare, and its body tensed, ready to attack.
Gray stared at the fully healed Kraken, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing. ’It... regenerated...’
Cindy’s voice came, barely a whisper.
"This is... a miracle..."
