Chapter 10: Tactical Battle
Gray hovered in the quiet dark of his shelter. He’d made his decision.
’Toxin Cloud. Let’s go with that.’
[EVOLUTION CONFIRMED: NEMATOCYST STING → TOXIN CLOUD]
[2 Skill Points Consumed]
[Skill Points Remaining: 4]
His tentacles tingled as the nematocysts restructured themselves. The sensation rippled through him like a second pulse, his nematocysts shifting, hardening, rearranging into something new. When it faded, he could feel the cloud waiting, coiled and ready. A sphere of invisible death, two meters wide, deployable at will.
’Area control. Zoning. A way to keep enemies at range. Let’s see how it actually performs.’
He drifted out of the crevice, scanning the rocky slope. The massacre site was empty now, the ash long settled. But near the base of the right boulder, a crab about the size of his bell was scraping at something half-buried in the sand. Its mottled brown shell blended almost perfectly with the rock.
[ROCK CARAPACE CRAB — Level 4]
HP: 40 / 40
Weakness: Electrical attacks. Slow-moving, heavily armored.
’Perfect.’
He released the cloud. His tentacles shuddered as the nematocysts detached—a faint, crawling sensation, like shedding skin. The water around him turned deadly.
The crab sensed it late. Its eyestalks whipped toward him, then toward the invisible threat already seeping into its joints. Panic set in. Claws snapped. Legs churned sand. But the venom doesn’t care about panic.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 6 DAMAGE]
[PARALYZE — 3 seconds]
Gray followed, keeping the crab enveloped. Damage ticked again. Seven. Then six. The crab’s health bar dropped steadily, its armored shell useless against venom that seeped through the gaps in its plating. It tried to flee when the paralysis broke, but Gray was faster now. Twelve SPD to its clumsy scuttle.
He didn’t even need Overcharge. The cloud finished it in seconds.
[ROCK CARAPACE CRAB DEFEATED — 25 EXP]
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Minor Shell Plating" — Collect additional fragments to unlock full trait at Level 10 Evolution.]
Gray absorbed the remains, his hunger dropping to 5%. ’Trait fragments. So grinding isn’t just about EXP. It’s about building evolution options.’ That changed things. Every crab made him potentially tankier. Every shock-producing fish might boost his electrical skills. The system rewarded targeted hunting.
A new notification cut through his thoughts.
[WARNING: Bioluminescent Pulse is attracting attention.]
[Something is approaching from the south. Size: Medium. Speed: Fast.]
Gray’s tentacles went rigid. He scanned the dark water, dimming his glow as much as the passive skill would allow.
The shape emerged from the gloom. Three feet long, sleek and silver, with a single dorsal fin and rows of needle teeth. Its eyes were large and luminous and unmistakably intelligent.
[BAREFIN HUNTER — Level 8]
HP: 120 / 120
Threat Level: HIGH
Weakness: Sensitive to sudden bright light.
It circled him slowly, effortless and predatory, drawn by the light he couldn’t turn off. Assessing whether he was worth the effort.
Then its body tensed.
And it charged.
The Barefin Hunter closed the distance in a heartbeat, its sleek body cutting through the water like a silver blade. Gray pulsed sideways, his twelve SPD giving him just enough reaction time to avoid the initial strike. The fish’s jaws snapped shut inches from his bell.
’It’s so fast—!!’
He activated Toxin Cloud immediately. The invisible sphere of nematocysts billowed around him. The hunter passed through the outer edge on its next pass, and Gray saw the damage tick.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 5 DAMAGE]
[BAREFIN HUNTER — HP: 115 / 120]
[PARALYZE — RESISTED]
’Resisted. Of course it resisted. It’s two levels above me.’
The hunter circled back, undeterred by the mild sting. Its silver scales caught the glow of his bioluminescence as it assessed him from a distance. Toxin Cloud wouldn’t be enough. At five damage per second, he’d need twenty-four seconds to kill it—assuming it stayed inside the cloud the entire time. It wouldn’t.
’Overcharge is my only real shot. But it costs twenty-five MP and nine HP. And if I miss—’
The hunter lunged again. Gray pulsed upward, but the fish adjusted mid-strike, its body twisting with predatory precision. Its jaws grazed his bell.
[-18 HP]
[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 143 / 170]
’Eighteen damage. Through eleven DEF. This thing hits hard.’
He couldn’t dodge forever. Toxin Cloud wasn’t killing it fast enough. Overcharge was the only answer.
’Wait for the right moment. It’s sensitive to bright light. My Bioluminescent Pulse is passive — I can’t flash it. But maybe I don’t need to. Maybe I just need to time Overcharge right.’
The hunter circled again, its luminous eyes tracking him with cold intelligence. It was learning his patterns. Each pass got closer. Each dodge was narrower.
’Come on. Come closer. I’m just a helpless jellyfish. Nothing to worry about.’
The hunter lunged.
Gray activated Overcharge.
Electricity erupted across his body, arcing over his bell and through his tentacles in brilliant blue-white patterns that lit up the dark water like a lightning storm. The sudden flash caught the hunter mid-lunge. Its sensitive eyes flared wide, and for a split second, it faltered.
That was all Gray needed.
He pulsed forward and made contact.
[OVERCHARGE — 34 DAMAGE]
[BAREFIN HUNTER — HP: 81 / 120]
[STUN — 3 seconds]
The hunter seized. Its sleek body locked rigid, fins splayed, jaw frozen open. Fifty-five percent stun chance, and he’d hit it. Gray didn’t waste the window. He reactivated Toxin Cloud, enveloping the stunned predator in a sphere of venom.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 6 DAMAGE]
[TOXIN CLOUD — 7 DAMAGE]
[TOXIN CLOUD — 5 DAMAGE]
[BAREFIN HUNTER — HP: 63 / 120]
The stun broke. The hunter thrashed, its powerful tail sending it rocketing out of the cloud. It wheeled around to face him, and for the first time, Gray saw something new in its luminous eyes.
Caution.
It wasn’t used to prey fighting back. It wasn’t used to pain.
But it wasn’t retreating either. Sixty-three HP remaining. Gray’s MP sat at one hundred twenty. Toxin Cloud was on cooldown for eight more seconds. Overcharge was on cooldown for thirty-eight.
’I need to survive until Overcharge comes back. One more good hit should finish it.’
The hunter circled wider now, keeping its distance. It had learned that close range meant electricity. But Gray was still glowing. Still a target. And the hunter was patient.
Then it did something he didn’t expect.
It dove. Straight down, toward the seafloor, disappearing behind a cluster of boulders. Gray tracked its silver shape weaving through the rocks, but it was too fast to follow visually. He extended his tentacles, reading the vibrations in the water.
’Where is it? Where did it—’
The vibration came from directly below.
Gray pulsed upward with everything he had. The hunter exploded from beneath him, jaws open, a vertical ambush from his blind spot. Its teeth grazed his lowest tentacle, tearing a chunk from the translucent flesh.
[-22 HP]
[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 121 / 170]
’This bastard is using tactics?!’
The hunter circled again, its silver body glinting in the dark.
’It’s going to ambush me again. And next time, I might not dodge.’
