Chapter 43: The Abyssal Veil

Gray left the Colossal Crab’s territory behind and pulsed into unfamiliar waters. The kelp thinned gradually, the rocky terrain giving way to soft sand that sloped downward into darkness. His tentacles swept the water ahead, reading vibrations and electrical fields, mapping terrain he’d never seen before.

Then the seafloor simply... ended.

He stopped at the edge, his tentacles curling back instinctively. Before him stretched a chasm so vast and deep that his senses couldn’t find the bottom. The cliff dropped away into absolute blackness. Just a cold, silent void that seemed to swallow the ocean itself.

A shiver ran through his bell.

’There’s no bottom. I can’t feel anything down there. It’s just... nothing.’

He hovered at the precipice, staring into the abyss. His human mind, still operating on terrestrial logic, struggled to comprehend a drop that had no end. On Earth, everything had a bottom. But this wasn’t Earth, and the rules here were different.

He pulsed backward, putting distance between himself and the chasm. The darkness seemed to reach for him as he retreated, a cold current rising from the depths like an exhale from something vast and ancient.

’I’ll come back when I’m ready.’

He turned away from the abyss and focused on the task at hand.

The new creature appeared near a cluster of volcanic boulders at the edge of the kelp line. At first, Gray mistook it for a strange ray—its body was flat and diamond-shaped, gliding through the water with elegant, undulating movements. But as he drifted closer, the details resolved into something far more intimidating.

Its body was nearly three feet across, dark grey on top with a pale underbelly. A long, whip-like tail trailed behind it, lined with serrated barbs that glinted in the faint light. Two curved horns jutted from its head, sweeping backward like a bull’s, their surfaces ridged and sharp. And suspended between those horns, dangling from a fleshy appendage, was a bioluminescent lure that pulsed with a warm, golden glow.

[HORNED LANTERN RAY — Level 19]

HP: 280 / 280

Threat Level: MODERATE

« Analysis »

A solitary predator that combines the graceful mobility of a ray with the ambush tactics of an anglerfish. The Horned Lantern Ray uses its bioluminescent lure to attract prey in low-light environments, then impales it with its horns or delivers a devastating electrical shock through its tail.

WARNING: Capable of ranged electrical discharge. The tail can fire arcs of electricity up to 5 meters. Do not engage in open water without cover.

Weakness: Fragile body beneath the horns. Slow to change direction once committed to a charge. Lure is sensitive to damage.

Gray studied the creature, his tentacles twitching with anticipation.

’Level 19. Stronger than me, but not by much. And it uses electricity—just like I do.’

The Lantern Ray drifted through the water, its lure pulsing with that hypnotic golden light. Small fish gathered around it, drawn by the glow, unaware that they were swimming toward death.

’If I can kill it, the EXP will push me closer to Level 20. And maybe the trait fragment will be something useful.’

He drifted closer, Hollow Cloak rendering him nearly invisible. The Lantern Ray continued its slow, elegant glide, its lure working its magic on the small creatures below. Gray positioned himself above and behind it, where its horns couldn’t reach.

Neurotoxic Drift deployed.

The invisible venom cloud descended toward the Ray. But the creature sensed something—a disturbance in the water. Its lure flickered, and it spun with surprising speed.

The electrical discharge caught Gray completely off guard.

An arc of brilliant blue-white lightning shot from the Ray’s tail, crossing the distance between them in an instant. Gray pulsed sideways, but the electricity grazed his bell margin.

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 373 / 395]

’Tch—ranged attack!’

The Ray didn’t flee. It turned to face him, its lure dimming as it redirected energy to its tail. The barbs along the appendage crackled with residual electricity. Its horns lowered, pointing toward him like twin spears.

Gray deployed Neurotoxic Drift again, but the Ray was already moving. It glided sideways with that same effortless grace, avoiding the worst of the venom cloud. A few particles caught its wing-like fins, and the damage ticks began—but they were minor.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]

[HORNED LANTERN RAY — HP: 268 / 280]

’It’s too agile. And that tail...’

Another arc of electricity lanced toward him. Gray pulsed left, but the Ray had anticipated his dodge. The second discharge caught him square in the bell.

[-28 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 345 / 395]

’This is annoying.’

He tried to close the distance, but the Ray kept him at range. Every time he pulsed forward, it glided backward. Every time he deployed Neurotoxic Drift, it dodged. Its lure flickered with what almost looked like amusement.

’You think this is funny?’

He was about to try a different approach when the water changed.

It started as a pressure shift—a sudden, subtle increase that made his bell compress involuntarily. Then the temperature dropped. A cold current slithered through the boulder field, carrying with it a vibration that Gray recognized instantly.

The Horned Lantern Ray froze. Its lure went dark. Its horns lowered, no longer aimed at Gray but sweeping the water in every direction. It had sensed it too.

The kelp behind the Ray exploded outward.

The Abyssal erupted from the fronds with devastating speed. Its massive body shot through the water like a living battering ram. Its eyeless head, that flat snout lined with rows of chaotic, overlapping teeth, locked onto the Horned Lantern Ray with predatory certainty.

The Ray tried to flee. Its elegant glide became a desperate sprint, its tail lashing with electrical discharge that arced across the Abyssal’s armored plates. But the electricity did nothing. The Abyssal’s chitin absorbed the current without so much as a flinch.

The creature’s massive jaws closed around the Ray’s body.

The crunch of bones was audible even through the water. The Ray’s lure flickered once, twice, then went dark. Its horns snapped like twigs. Its whip-like tail, still sparking with residual electricity, was severed with a single shake of the Abyssal’s head.

The Horned Lantern Ray was dead in less than three seconds.

Gray didn’t wait to see more.

’RUN.’

Gray activated EMP Shroud and pulsed backward with everything he had. The electromagnetic pulse radiated outward, erasing his electrical signature and silencing his vibrations.

But the Abyssal was already lunging.

It had committed to its charge before the EMP went off, its massive body already in motion, its jaws already opening. The creature couldn’t sense him anymore—couldn’t feel his electrical field or his vibrations. But it didn’t matter. Momentum carried it forward. It was a battering ram with no brakes, a freight train of chitin and teeth, and Gray was directly in its path.

The jaws closed around his bell.

[-58 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 287 / 395]

Pain detonated through his body. The Abyssal’s needle teeth sank deep into his translucent flesh—and then the creature did something Gray didn’t expect.

It kept going.

Straight down.

’Fuck—’

The Abyssal couldn’t sense where it was going. The EMP had turned its sensory world into static. Its momentum carried it forward blindly, its massive body hurtling through the darkness with Gray still clamped in its jaws.

They shot past the edge of the chasm.

The seafloor vanished beneath them. The water grew colder, heavier, the pressure increasing with every passing second. The abyss swallowed them both—a darkness so absolute that even Gray’s enhanced senses couldn’t find a bottom.

’Let go let go let go—!’

He thrashed in the creature’s grip, his tentacles lashing against its armored snout. The teeth held firm. His HP ticked down as the jaws slowly crushed his bell margin.

[-12 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 263 / 395]

’Neurotoxic Drift!’

He deployed the venom directly into the Abyssal’s open mouth, maximum concentration, every nematocyst sac emptying at once.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 18 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 17 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 19 DAMAGE]

[??? ABYSSAL ??? — HP: ??? / ???]

The creature’s jaws twitched. The venom was seeping into its throat, into the soft tissue behind its teeth. But the damage numbers barely registered against its massive HP pool.

’Overcharge!’

Electricity erupted at point-blank range, arcing directly into the Abyssal’s gullet.

[OVERCHARGE — 71 DAMAGE]

[??? ABYSSAL ??? — HP: ??? / ???]

The jaws spasmed. The grip loosened—just slightly, just for a moment.

Gray tore himself free.

He didn’t look back. He pulsed upward with everything he had, seventy SPD straining against the crushing pressure of the deep. The Abyssal’s vibration continued downward, fading into the abyss, its blind momentum carrying it deeper and deeper into the darkness.

It wasn’t pursuing. It probably didn’t even know he was gone.

Gray pulsed upward through the absolute darkness, his bell straining against the weight of the water, his tentacles stretched toward the distant cliff edge above.

The cliff edge came into view—a jagged line of volcanic rock silhouetted against the slightly-less-dark water of the open ocean. He was almost there. Almost safe.

Then something wrapped around his bell.

It was cold. Muscular. It coiled around his body like a serpent, tightening with crushing force before he could even process what was happening. His tentacles lashed out instinctively, but whatever had grabbed him was strong—far stronger than anything he’d fought before.

’What—?!’

Neurotoxic Drift deployed at maximum concentration. The venom cloud billowed outward, enveloping whatever was holding him. The damage ticks began.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 17 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 18 DAMAGE]

[??? — HP: ??? / ???]

The creature didn’t flinch. The venom seeped into its flesh, but its grip only tightened. Gray felt his bell compressing, his translucent body distorting under the pressure.

[-15 HP]

[-15 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 233 / 395]

Overcharge. He activated it without thinking, electricity erupting from every cell. The current arced through the water and into the creature’s body.

[OVERCHARGE — 68 DAMAGE]

[??? — HP: ??? / ???]

Nothing. The grip held. The creature didn’t even twitch.

’What IS this thing?!’

The crushing pressure intensified. Gray’s vision flickered. His bioluminescent sensors began to dim. His HP ticked down steadily.

[-15 HP]

[-15 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 203 / 395]

Then the creature began to descend.

It pulled him downward, away from the cliff edge, away from the light, away from everything he’d been fighting to reach. The darkness swallowed them both.

His consciousness began to fade.

’I’m... being dragged down...’

The cold seeped into his bell. His tentacles went slack. His HP bar flickered in the corner of his vision—178, then 165, then 152. The numbers blurred together. He couldn’t focus on them anymore.

[DYING — 60 seconds remaining.]

’No... not like this...’

Then the system chimed. A notification, soft and golden, cutting through the darkness of his fading mind.

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: THE ABYSSAL VEIL]

[Analysis: A transitional zone between the mid-depth ocean and the true abyss. The water pressure here is immense, capable of crushing most organic life. The temperature hovers just above freezing. Bioluminescent organisms are the primary source of light.]

[NOTICE: Due to your Abyssal Aurelia variant, your body has natural resistance to extreme pressure. Pressure damage significantly reduced.]

’Abyssal Veil...’

The darkness around him was no longer empty. Faint lights flickered in the depths below—bioluminescent creatures, their glowing forms drifting through the black like living stars. The creature dragging him passed through their midst, and for a moment, Gray caught a glimpse of his captor.

It was a tentacle. A single massive tentacle, mottled grey and lined with suckers the size of his entire bell. It extended upward into the darkness, toward something so vast that his fading senses couldn’t find its edges.

The tentacle pulled him deeper.

[DYING — 38 seconds remaining.]

’Can’t... fight it...’

His consciousness flickered. His HP bar sat at 98. The crushing pressure was easing—the system’s notification had been right, his Abyssal variant was adapting to the depth—but it didn’t matter. The tentacle was still wrapped around him. The creature at the other end was still pulling him down.

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift one final time. The venom cloud spread through the water, but the tentacle didn’t react. Whatever he was fighting, it was too large. His poison was an inconvenience at best.

[DYING — 22 seconds remaining.]

His vision went dark at the edges. The bioluminescent stars below grew dimmer. The cold wrapped around him like a shroud.

’So this is it... dragged into the abyss by something I can’t even see...’

His tentacles went limp. His bell stopped pulsing. The last thing he saw before consciousness faded was the faint, distant glow of something enormous waiting below—a massive, shapeless form surrounded by dozens of those mottled grey tentacles, each one moving with slow, patient hunger.

Then the darkness swallowed him whole.
