Rayan followed Coach João Tavares down the quiet corridor of the Sporting academy offices, his mother walking half a step behind him.

Tavares held open the door to Meeting Room B. Inside, Marta Nunes sat at the head of a long wooden table, her tablet resting beside a thick paper dossier. Álvaro Pires stood near the pulled-down window blinds, writing a final note on a clipboard.

"Sit down, please," Marta said, gesturing to the two chairs facing the table.

Rayan pulled out a chair and sat upright, his hands clasped tightly in his lap. His thumbs pressed against the seam of his dark trousers, exactly as they had outside. He tried to read Marta’s face, looking for a shift in her posture, a glance between the adults or a tightness around her eyes.

There were no matches left to play. No extra sessions could be added to Dr Fonseca’s log. No Casa Pia assist could be recorded again. Everything he had done across six months lay bound inside the blue folder in front of Marta.

Sofia sat beside him, placing her handbag on her lap. She kept her eyes fixed on Marta.

Marta closed the dossier, resting both hands flat over the cover.

"Rayan," Marta said, her voice clear and measured. "We have completed our squad review for the Under-16 group. The decision has been agreed by the technical staff."

Rayan swallowed, his throat dry.

"Sporting CP is retaining you," Marta said. "You are invited into the primary Under-17 preseason group."

The room remained completely still. The words seemed to hang in the quiet space, disconnected from everything Rayan had spent the past three weeks fearing.

"Retained?" Rayan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "The primary group?"

"Yes," Marta said softly. "Your pathway at the academy continues."

A sudden, sharp pressure built behind Rayan’s eyes. He dropped his gaze immediately, staring down at the polished surface of the table. He pressed his lips together, swallowing twice as his breathing shortened. He wiped a hand quickly across his face, pretending to rub a tired eye, forcing himself not to break down in front of the director.

Beside him, Sofia let out a quiet, trembling breath. She reached over and placed her hand firmly over Rayan’s wrist, her fingers warm and grounding.

"Before we discuss the schedule, understand the limits," Marta said. "This is primary U17 preseason, not a guaranteed start or permanent place. There is no professional contract, Sporting B role or first-team promise. School, behaviour and medical compliance remain conditions."

Rayan nodded, keeping his head down until he was sure his face was composed. "I understand, Dona Marta."

Tavares leaned forward against the edge of the table, catching Rayan’s eye.

"The goal against Real SC and the Casa Pia assist helped," Tavares said. "But you’re staying because you’ve started finding another route when the first one closes. You take correction, stay involved and take school seriously. You’ve earned the chance to train with a tougher group. What you do with it is up to you."

Rayan looked at his coach, feeling the weight of the words settle into him. "When does preseason start, Coach?"

"The primary group starts Monday, 3 July," Tavares replied. "Your baseline testing is tomorrow. Dona Sofia, the schedule, transport details and education notes are in the envelope."

Sofia stood up, taking the white envelope Marta handed across the desk. Her hand was steady now. "Thank you, Dona Marta. Thank you, João."

"We’ll see you tomorrow for testing," Marta said, offering a small, reserved smile.

They walked out of the academy building and into the warm afternoon air of Alcochete.

The heat hit them as soon as they crossed the automatic doors, the sky clear and pale blue over the practice pitches. They walked towards the bus stop in silence for fifty metres before Sofia stopped near the gravel path.

She turned to face Rayan, adjusting the envelope under her arm. Her eyes were bright, but her voice remained firm.

"You worked for this, Rayan," Sofia said softly.

Rayan looked down at his boots, then back up at her. "I know, Mom."

"Now we check the bus times," Sofia said, her tone instantly shifting back to practical reality. "I need to look at Dr Fonseca’s schedule to make sure your training doesn’t overlap with your summer reading. And I want to see exactly what they’ve written about the transport arrangements."

Rayan couldn’t suppress a small, quiet smile. "Yes, Mom."

By seven in the evening, they were back in the Olivais apartment.

The news spread rapidly through phone screens and voice messages, though there was no single party or quiet gathering.

Karim called first from his car, his voice booming over the speaker. "My lion!" Karim shouted, laughing loudly over the static. "I knew it! A primary U17 player!"

"It’s just preseason, Dad," Rayan said, sitting on the edge of his bed.

"Preseason is where they see what you can do!" Karim insisted. "We celebrate this weekend. I’ll bring fish from the market!"

When the call ended, Leonor opened his bedroom door, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed.

"So U17 means you’re going to be even more annoying now?" Leonor asked, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "Does this mean I get the television on Sunday, or do I still have to watch you review passing drills?"

"You can have the television," Rayan said, throwing a small pair of rolled-up socks at her.

Leonor caught them and tossed them back onto his desk. "Good. Congratulations, Rayan."

Messages continued to arrive throughout the evening.

Joca sent a rapid text: Retained! I told you! Next season the video edits are going to look insane. U17 tempo hits different on camera.

Idris called five minutes later, his tone completely practical: "When do you start? Did they give you the gym schedule? Make sure you check if Dr Fonseca changed the core exercises."

Teu sent a brief voice note: U17 preseason! Don’t let those older centre-backs bully you, man. See you at the pitch next week.

Inês sent a warm, simple message: So happy for you, Rayan! You worked so hard for this over the last few months. Congratulations!

At nine o’clock, a message popped up from Bia.

Rayan tapped the screen.

You earned this chance, Rayan. I’m really happy for you. When does preseason begin?

Rayan read the message twice, sitting in the quiet of his room. He typed back a brief reply: The first group session is Monday. Testing starts tomorrow. Thanks, Bia. It means a lot.

He set the phone face down on his desk.

The room grew quiet.

Only then, as the noise of the day faded, did a smoked-black panel resolve at the edge of Rayan’s vision.

[SPORTING CP RETENTION CONFIRMED.]

[ACADEMY STATUS UPDATED: PRIMARY U17 PRESEASON.]

[MILESTONE COMPLETE: SURVIVE THE RELEASE WINDOW.]

[Reward: +8 Attribute Points.]

[Reward: +1 Basic Skill Token.]

[POSITION FAMILIARITY UNLOCKED.]

[Overall: 46 → 47.]

Rayan reread the clinical text inside his vision.

[Primary compatibility: Inverted Left Winger.]

[Secondary development route detected: Attacking Midfield.]

[Current attacking-midfield familiarity: Low.]

His right foot and acceleration suited an inverted role from the left, while central play still demanded faster scanning, tighter-space decisions and real positional experience.

A new prompt replaced the analytical display.

[MISSION CHAIN: U17 INTEGRATION.]

[Time Limit: 21 days.]

[Complete five full U17 training sessions.]

[Record three positive match actions.]

[Reach Body Feint: Basic.]

[Demonstrate two-role compatibility.]

[Reward: +5 Attribute Points / +1 Intermediate Skill Token.]

Rayan didn’t allocate the eight attribute points. He didn’t spend the basic skill token. He simply let the interface fade into the dim light of his bedroom.

He walked over to his wardrobe and took out his green-and-white Sporting kit, folding the academy number 11 shirt neatly on his chair. He set his black training boots on newspaper and cleaned rubber crumb from the studs with an old toothbrush.

He had survived the release window.
