Chapter 49: Volume 1, - 49: A Match Without a Highlight
Saturday morning arrived under a low, flat overcast that blanketed the western outskirts of Lisbon.
The stadium’s single main stand held no more than eighty people: a cluster of parents wrapped in windbreakers, a few academy staff members with clipboard pads resting on their knees, two regional scouts in plain navy jackets, and a handful of local supporters drinking black coffee from paper cups near the perimeter fence. There were no cameras, no banners, and no crowd noise beyond isolated shouts echoing off the damp concrete.
Rayan stepped off the team bus at nine-fifteen, his kit bag slung over his right shoulder. The grass on the main pitch had been left slightly longer than the surface at Sporting’s academy. Thick, heavy, and holding the dampness of the early morning fog.
Inside the visiting changing room, João Tavares stood near the white tactical board, waiting for the quiet to settle after the warm-up kit was stripped away.
"Casa Pia will not chase you," Tavares said, his voice level and dry. "They will sit on the thirty-five-yard line, lock the inside channel, and wait for you to grow impatient. If you give them cheap turnovers, Rahmani and Mota can carry forty yards before our shape recovers."
He picked up a magnet, tapping the left-wing position.
"Rayan. You have Teles. When you get the ball, Isaac Gomes will slide to cover Matias, and Monteiro will drop to watch Nuno. Do not waste touches trying to break the wall inside. Release early, shift their block, and get back into shape when we turn it over."
Rayan pulled the green-and-white shirt over his head, smoothing down the hoops. As he walked out through the concrete tunnel, the blue System interface flickered across his peripheral vision:
[MATCH OBJECTIVE: CASA PIA U16]
[PRIMARY REQUIREMENT: MAKE THE CORRECT RELEASE WHEN THE INSIDE LANE IS PROTECTED.]
[SECONDARY REQUIREMENT: COMPLETE DEFENSIVE RECOVERY RESPONSIBILITIES.]
[SUCCESS CRITERION: MAINTAIN TACTICAL DISCIPLINE AND TWO-TOUCH SPEED OF RELEASE.]
[STATISTICAL NOTE: GOAL OR ASSIST NOT REQUIRED FOR OBJECTIVE COMPLETION.]
He blinked it away and jogged out to the left flank.
Casa Pia’s 4-4-2 block was as rigid and disciplined as Tavares had warned. Their central back four, anchored by their tall captain Guilherme Pinto and centre-back Luís Domingues, rarely moved more than ten yards from the edge of their penalty area. In front of them, Isaac Gomes and Nuno Reis formed a dense screen, denying any direct service into Tiago Silva’s feet.
In the eighth minute, Afonso Carvalho played a diagonal ground pass out to Rayan on the touchline.
Rayan controlled with his right boot, felt Teles holding the inside, and used his second touch to return the ball to Nuno Valente, who recycled possession backwards to the centre-backs.
Six minutes later, Matias snapped a loose ball out to the left flank. Rayan received with his body open. Teles closed in, but hesitated three yards away, wary of Rayan’s acceleration. Rayan scanned once, saw Nuno Valente making his overlap early, and snapped a two-touch pass down the line into his stride. Nuno hit the cross first-time, but Pinto met it at the front post, clearing it with a heavy header.
In the twenty-fourth minute, impatience struck.
Matias played a sharp line-breaking pass into Rayan’s feet twenty-five yards out. Nuno Valente called for the ball down the touchline, but Rayan saw a narrow seam between Isaac Gomes and Teles.
He delayed his release, taking a third touch to set his hips towards the penalty arc.
In that fraction of a second, the window closed. Teles stood his ground and angled his shoulders while Gomes stepped across from the inside, closing the space with a firm tackle. The ball ricocheted off Gomes’s shin and rolled straight to Nuno Reis, who immediately released Monteiro down the right.
"Two touches, Rayan!" Tavares yelled from the technical area. "Nuno was free!"
Rayan turned immediately and chased Rafael Monteiro down Casa Pia’s right. He recovered goal-side before Monteiro could attack the space behind Nuno Valente, forcing him to turn back and recycle possession to his defenders.
In the thirty-eighth minute, Rayan produced his best moment of the half. Receiving from Tomás Veiga along the touchline, he pushed the first touch down the line with his left foot, used Teles’s hesitation to gain half a yard, and drove a hard, low ball across the six-yard box.
The cutback reached Tiago Silva in space. Tiago struck it first-time towards the bottom corner, but Martim Vale dived low to tip it around the post.
Casa Pia nearly punished Sporting just before half-time. Nuno Reis switched play quickly towards Ilyas Rahmani on the left wing. Rahmani attacked the space behind Miguel Correia, cut inside Afonso Carvalho, and struck a curling effort aimed at the top corner. Diogo Ramos launched himself across goal, producing a finger-tip save to push the ball onto the crossbar before Duarte Lopes booted the rebound clear.
Score at half-time: Casa Pia U16 0–0 Sporting CP U16.
During half-time, Tavares drew two small adjustments in green marker near the right channel.
"Casa Pia are leaning their entire structure towards Rayan and Nuno," Tavares told the squad. "Matias, when the ball comes back to you from the left, don’t wait for them to reset. Look for Duarte Faria immediately. The space is behind their left-back."
He turned his eyes to Rayan. "Good work rate, minus the delay in the twenty-fourth minute. Keep shifting Teles. You are creating the balance for the team."
The second half began with higher intensity. Rayan executed repetitive, unglamorous tactical actions. Releasing down the line for Nuno Valente, or tracking back forty yards to cover Rafael Monteiro when possession turned over.
On the opposite side, Duarte Faria was increasingly becoming Sporting’s most dangerous attacker. He beat Tomé Faria to one switched pass and forced him backwards, then drove inside to win a corner two minutes later. Casa Pia were still controlling Rayan’s side, but every shift towards Sporting’s left left Duarte with another yard to work in.
In the fifty-eighth minute, Tavares’s half-time adjustment paid off.
Rayan received wide on the left, recognized the double-team, and recycled the ball backwards to Tomás Veiga. Sporting worked possession cleanly through Nunes to Matias in the central circle.
With Casa Pia’s block pulled out of shape, Matias spotted Duarte Faria making a sharp diagonal run behind the left-back and delivered a lofted pass over the line. Duarte took it on his chest, let it bounce once, and hammered a low half-volley into the bottom far corner.
Casa Pia 0–1 Sporting CP.
By the sixty-eighth minute, the heavy pitch and constant tracking were taking their toll. Rayan’s legs felt heavy, and his recovery sprints were losing their early sharpness.
On the touchline, Luís Neto called Bernardo Rocha from the bench and gave him a quick reminder about tracking Monteiro and keeping the release simple. Bernardo stripped off his grey warm-up top and waited beside the fourth official.
In the seventy-second minute, the electronic board went up: Number 11 off, Number 14 on.
Rayan unstrapped his shin pads as he walked to the touchline, exchanged a quick high-five with Bernardo, and took his seat on the bench. He hated leaving without a number beside his name, but he knew exactly why his legs were finished.
Seventy-two minutes played. Zero goals. Zero assists.
Sporting preserved the lead through team defending over the remaining eighteen minutes. Duarte Lopes won consecutive aerial headers, Afonso Carvalho blocked a low drive from Leandro Azevedo, and Diogo Ramos gathered a stoppage-time corner to seal the win.
Full-time score: Casa Pia U16 0–1 Sporting CP U16.
In the visitor changing room after the final whistle, João Tavares addressed the group.
"Solid performance," Tavares said. "Diogo, two big saves. Duarte Lopes, dominant aerial work. Matias, great vision on the pass. Duarte Faria, excellent finish. Decisive when it mattered."
Duarte gave a modest grin from his bench.
Tavares glanced across at Rayan, who was unlacing his boots in the corner.
"Rayan. good work today. You followed the plan, moved their block, and recovered behind Nuno when we lost it."
"Thank you, Coach," Rayan said quietly.
The System interface flickered in his vision:
[MATCH OBJECTIVE: CASA PIA U16 — COMPLETED]
[PRIMARY REQUIREMENT EVALUATION: PASSED — CORRECT RELEASES EXECUTED]
[SECONDARY REQUIREMENT EVALUATION: PASSED — DEFENSIVE RECOVERIES COMPLETED]
[SYSTEM RATING: ADEQUATE / FUNCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT]
By four in the afternoon, Rayan was back at the Olivais apartment, lying on his bed with his shoes off while Sofia prepared tea in the kitchen.
His mobile phone buzzed on his desk with notifications from his school friends’ group chat:
Joca: Happy 16th birthday @Rafa!
Mateus: Happy birthday bro! Hope the family dinner has cake.
Bia: Happy birthday Rafa! 🎉
Idris: 16! Don’t spend the whole evening talking about tactical setups.
Rayan: Happy 16th birthday, Rafa. How was Seixal?
Rafa Costa: Thanks guys! Long day. Played most of the match in midfield. Family dinner now.
Rayan: Enjoy it. You only turn sixteen once.
Rafa Costa: Cheers bro. Saw Sporting won 1–0 away. Good result against Casa Pia. Rayan: Yeah. Solid team performance.
Joca: Are we meeting near the plaza tomorrow after study group?
Rafa Costa: Yeah, let’s grab food around four.
Rayan locked his phone screen and set it down on his chest, staring up at the white ceiling.
Rafa was sixteen now. Everyone was moving forward, step by step, match by match.
