Chapter 68: Volume 1, - 68: The Risk
The afternoon heat had settled over Pitch Three as the second half got underway.
Rayan trotted out onto the left wing, his lungs taking in deep, controlled breaths. João Tavares’s half-time words still rang in his ears: "You’ve stopped making mistakes because you’ve stopped trying anything."
Standing near the touchline, Salvador Rato bounced lightly on his toes, checking his distance.
Rayan adjusted his wrist tape, his heart beating a rapid rhythm. He didn’t have a formula. He didn’t have a guaranteed blueprint for which risk was correct and which was reckless. But as Nunes restarted play from the centre circle, Rayan knew one thing with absolute clarity: choosing safety every time was no longer an option.
In the forty-eighth minute, the first opportunity presented itself.
Duarte Faria carried the ball down Sporting’s right flank, drawing Tiago Félix out of position before chopping back onto his left foot. Inside the box, Tiago Silva made his usual dart towards the front post, dragging Martim Cruz with him.
Ryan exploded into a full sprint towards the back post, attacking the blind side of Dário Fernandes. He saw the open pocket of grass, felt the surge of momentum, and raised his hand for the ball.
Duarte struck the cross, but the lofted ball lacked distance. Dário Fernandes stepped backward, rose cleanly above Tiago, and headed the clearance away to safety before the ball could ever reach the far post.
Rayan pulled up near the goal line, panting. Dário Fernandes landed, immediately turned towards his right-back, and clapped his hands sharply.
"Rato! Watch the back door!" Dário barked, pointing at Rayan. "Don’t let him run free behind you!"
Salvador Rato nodded, turning his back to sprint thirty yards to recover his position. Though the run hadn’t yielded a chance, it had altered the picture: Rato now had to choose between tracking Rayan’s back-post run and stepping out to Nuno, leaving the left-back with more room near the touchline.
Five minutes later, Rayan faced his second test.
Matias intercepted a sloppy square pass in midfield and immediately played the ball wide to the left touchline. Salvador Rato had stepped high and was isolated, with no central cover behind him.
For months, Rayan’s default instinct in one-on-one situations against a physical full-back was to pause, protect the ball with his body, and recycle backwards.
Instead, Rayan dropped his shoulder, pushed the ball firmly down the outside touchline with his left laces, and accelerated.
Rato didn’t panic. The Real SC right-back matched Rayan’s initial burst stride for stride, leaned heavily into Rayan’s hip with a well-timed shoulder charge, and poked the ball cleanly off Rayan’s boot and out for a Real SC throw-in.
The Real SC bench clapped for Rato’s defensive recovery.
Rayan stumbled slightly onto the painted line, his shoulder thumping from the impact. A familiar, suffocating coldness tried to creep back into his chest.
Instead of hiding, Rayan immediately held his position wide, signalling to Nuno that he was ready to receive again on the next phase. Rato noticed Rayan staying high and backed off three paces, relinquishing his aggressive pressing stance.
Sporting recycled possession through Duarte Lopes and Afonso, trying to draw Real SC forward. When the ball returned to Nuno, Rayan stayed wide and offered himself again.
This time, Rato refused to rush towards him. He held a deeper position, keeping his hips open so he could react to either the outside run or Rayan cutting infield. João Azevedo shifted several yards towards that side as additional cover.
Nuno passed into Rayan’s feet. Rayan controlled with his right boot and looked up, but the route down the line had already narrowed. Rather than dribbling blindly into two defenders, he returned the ball to Nuno and moved inside.
"Better!" Tavares shouted from the technical area. "Make him change first!"
The action produced nothing more than retained possession, but Rayan understood the difference. Taking risks did not mean attacking on every touch. The earlier duel had forced Rato to defend differently. Now Rayan had to recognise that adjustment and choose again.
In the fifty-seventh minute, Rayan tried a third variation.
Receiving a ground pass from Nuno, Rayan laid the ball off instantly to Matias in the half-space, then immediately accelerated past his marker into the central channel, offering a quick give-and-go.
Real SC’s shape was disciplined. Dário Fernandes held the backline and shouted for cover, while João Azevedo followed Rayan into the channel, closing the return lane before Matias could complete the pass. Guilherme Sousa dropped beside him, forcing Matias to turn away and reset through Afonso.
Three attempts at calculated attacking risk. The internal shift was profound
Real SC remained a constant threat. In the sixty-second minute, Bernardo Lima collected a half-clearance in midfield, turned away from Nunes, and threaded a disguised pass between Afonso and Duarte Lopes. Leonardo Silva gathered it in his stride, took a sharp touch into the area, and shot with his left foot. Diogo Ramos reacted brilliantly, diving low to palm the strike around the post.
The resulting corner was whipped dangerously towards the penalty spot. Martim Cruz rose above Duarte Lopes and powered a downward header towards goal, but Afonso threw his body into the path of the ball, blocking the shot with his chest before sweeping the second ball clear to safety.
The match entered the sixty-sixth minute with the score still locked at 0–0.
Nunes reclaimed the ball near the centre circle, holding off Bernardo Lima with a strong arm and stabilising Sporting’s possession. He laid a square ball to Matias, who took one touch forward.
On the left wing, Rayan was wide. Salvador Rato was positioned five yards off him, visibly wary of both the touchline drive and the far-post run.
Matias shifted the ball smoothly onto his left foot and fired a crisp, horizontal pass out to Rayan.
Rayan killed the ball with his left boot.
Rato closed in quickly, bracing for a central dribble. Rayan didn’t force a narrow, crowded drive into the packed midfield. Instead, he saw Nuno bombing down the touchline on an overlapping run.
With perfect timing, Rayan slipped a subtle, side-foot pass down the line into Nuno’s path.
As Rato turned his hips to chase Nuno, Rayan didn’t stop. He accelerated instantly around Rato’s blind side, cutting diagonally towards the penalty area.
In the centre, Tiago Silva made a hard, aggressive run into the near-post channel, dragging both Dário Fernandes and Martim Cruz with him into the six-yard box.
The entire Real SC central defence collapsed inward to cover Tiago.
Nuno reached the ball just before the goal line, took one touch to set himself, and struck a low, hard cross flashing across the face of goal.
