The System Turned Football's Worst Prospect Into a Monster.

Chapter 70: Volume 1, - 70: Player Development Interface

The Olivais apartment smelled of fried mackerel and steamed rice when Rayan walked through the front door on Saturday evening.

Sofia set a wooden spoon on the stovetop as he dropped his sports bag in the hallway. She walked over, pressed her hand against his forehead to check for fever, then patted his cheek firmly.

"You cooled down properly?" she asked, her voice calm and practical as she turned back to the kitchen. "You didn’t sit in the draft near the changing rooms?"

"I stretched, Mom," Rayan said, pulling off his trainers. "I stayed inside."

"Good. Eat your dinner before it goes cold," she said, motioning towards the set table. She paused for a brief second, looking at him with a subtle, affectionate softening around her eyes. "Your movement for the goal was clean. Nuno’s mother called me from the bus. She said it was a good play."

Rayan felt a warm surge in his chest. "Yeah. Nuno put it right on a plate."

Leonor leaned around the kitchen doorway, holding her phone with a mischievous grin spread across her face. "Goalscorer," she chirped, making mock quotation marks with her fingers. "Should I start charging people to enter the bedroom of Sporting’s greatest striker?"

"I’m a winger, Leonor," Rayan said, sitting down.

"Whatever," she teased, hopping onto the chair opposite him. "I saw the video Nuno’s mum sent. Tiago dragged two players away and Nuno kicked the ball thirty metres. You just stood there and stuck your foot out. And then you looked like you saw a ghost when it went in!"

"I didn’t see a ghost," Rayan muttered, though he couldn’t stop the small grin from touching his lips.

His phone buzzed on the table. A forty-two-second voice note from Karim lit up the screen. Rayan pressed play, putting it on speaker.

Karim’s voice boomed through the speaker over the clatter of Youssef’s takeaway in Amadora. "Rayan! My boy! I heard! A rocket! Past three defenders and into the top corner! I told Youssef, ’That is my son, Rayan El Mansouri!’ Magnificent! Keep fighting, habibi!"

Sofia shook her head with a light sigh, taking her seat. "A rocket? It was a tap-in from three yards."

"It counts the same, Mom," Rayan said, smiling down at his plate.

Later that night, sitting on his bed in the quiet of his bedroom, Rayan pulled up the thirty-second video clip Nuno had forwarded to their squad group chat.

He watched it once, then paused and scrubbed back to the beginning. The first three times he had viewed it on the bus ride home, he had focused entirely on himself. His foot contact, his positioning, the ball hitting the net.

Now, watching it in the stillness of his room, his eye caught the broader picture. He saw Nunes stabilise possession before Matias shifted the attack left. He saw Tiago’s hard near-post sprint drag Dário Fernandes and Martim Cruz inward. He saw Nuno race beyond him and strike the low cross before Salvador Rato could recover Rayan’s blind-side movement.

It was a collective construction. Without any one of those actions, his finish wouldn’t have existed.

Rayan locked his phone, set it on the bedside table, and sat back against his pillows.

He closed his eyes and breathed out slowly. ’Open Interface.’

The faint, translucent smoked-black panel resolved instantly within his perception.

The pending prompt changed.

[PLAYER DEVELOPMENT INTERFACE ACTIVATED.]

[FOUNDATION PHASE: COMPLETE.]

[Direct development functions are now available.]

A sequence of text scrolled down the dark frame.

[FOUNDATION PHASE SUMMARY:]

[The initial phase imposed functional limitations until baseline discipline, real coaching compliance, Thirty-Day Foundation Challenge completion and one official competitive academy goal were verified.]

Then, six distinct tabs blossomed across his vision, aligning neatly in a row:

[ATTRIBUTE ALLOCATION] | [SKILL LIBRARY] | [ACTIVE MISSIONS] | [MATCH REPORTS] | [MILESTONE RECORDS] | [DEVELOPMENT INVENTORY]

Rayan’s heart hammered against his ribs. He reached out an arm instinctively, his fingers passing through empty air before he remembered he didn’t need to physically touch them. He shifted his focus rapidly from one tab to another, opening and closing panels so fast his eyes struggled to keep up.

"Calm down," he whispered to himself, taking a breath. "One at a time."

He focused first on [MATCH REPORTS]. The panel expanded into a structured breakdown of the morning’s game against Real SC.

[MATCH REPORT: SPORTING U16 2–0 REAL SC U16]

[Rating: 7.4]

[Goal Contributions: 1]

[Progressive Actions: 4]

[Successful Dribbles: 0/1]

[Defensive Recoveries: 3]

[Development Note: Attacking initiative decreased after goal.]

Rayan stared at the 7.4 rating with a sudden surge of pride. A 7.4 in an official academy match was a strong baseline. But his eyes narrowed slightly at the final line.

’Attacking initiative decreased after goal.’

He felt a brief sting of indignation. Part of him wanted to argue that he had made a tackle and a decoy run afterward. But deep down, he knew the System wasn’t reading his feelings or judging his character; it was recording the objective data. For several minutes after scoring, he had passed backwards and hesitated to drive into space.

He cleared the report and navigated to [MILESTONE RECORDS]. One notification was highlighted.

[MILESTONE COMPLETED: FIRST COMPETITIVE GOAL.]

[Reward: +5 Attribute Points.]

[Reward: +1 Basic Skill Token.]

[Overall: 43 → 44.]

’OVR 44.’

He was no longer sitting at 43. He was moving forward.

With trembling anticipation, Rayan opened the [ATTRIBUTE ALLOCATION] tab.

Five free points were listed at the top of the menu. His immediate, instinctive impulse was to put all five points straight into Pace or Acceleration. Speed was obvious. Speed beat defenders. Speed made everything easier.

He focused on Acceleration, preparing to assign the points, but a clinical warning message materialised across the attribute description.

[PHYSICAL COMPATIBILITY RESTRICTION:]

[Physical attribute allocation is limited by current biological development, structural conditioning and recovery capacity.]

[Allocation beyond supported thresholds is unavailable.]

Rayan paused, reading the text twice. If he tried to force more speed than his developing body could safely support, he risked overloading himself before he was ready. The System wasn’t forbidding him from upgrading his physicals, nor was it picking a path for him. It was simply laying out the reality of human anatomy.

He pulled back, staring at the full array of attributes spread before him. Technical, Physical, Tactical, Mental.

He could invest in technical control, strengthen his physical frame, or sharpen his tactical awareness. Every point meant something, and every choice carried a consequence.

He hovered over the options, his mind racing between immediate needs and long-term development. He didn’t spend a single point, nor did he touch the Basic Skill Token waiting in his inventory. He just sat there in the dark, overwhelmed by the weight of the decision.

At the bottom of the interface, two lines remained steadily displayed:

[Available Attribute Points: 5]

[Basic Skill Tokens: 1]
