Chapter 52: Blazing Sands
The fall came the same way it did as the time before — white noise, static, the sensation of the world tearing open beneath their feet. But this time, Lucas fell through it without the screaming panic that had gripped him the first time around.
Around him, familiar faces fell in loose formation, Eleanor’s hair whipping wild in the churning grey static, Mark’s gauntlets already half-formed around his fists out of pure reflex just like the first time.
However, this time was different. None of them screamed. None of them thrashed against the descent. They’d done this before, and their bodies had learned, somewhere along the way, that fighting the fall was pointless.
Mor’s people however, hadn’t learned that lesson yet.
Their screams cut through the white noise in ragged, panicked bursts, the sound of dozens of people experiencing for the first time what Lucas and the others had already survived — the disorientation, the wrongness of falling through nothing, and the creeping dread of not knowing what waited at the bottom.
Somewhere in the churning grey, Lucas caught sight of Bertram’s silhouette drifting steady and calm, and further off, Callum’s pale light already flickering faintly as he was preparing himself for whatever waited on the other side.
"Hold still, don’t fight it!" Eleanor’s voice sounded across the static, calm and commanding even mid fall, and a few of the newer survivors managed to steady themselves at the sound of it, latching onto her certainty like a lifeline amidst the chaos.
"Breathe through it. You’ll be fine. This is just the beginning..." Lucas added, catching sight of a young man nearby thrashing against the fall.
The young man’s eyes found his, wide and terrified, and something in Lucas’s voice seemed to reach him causing his limbs to slowly still, the panicked thrashing easing into something closer to acceptance, if not calm.
Then, all at once, the world resolved into color and warmth

Lucas hit solid ground hard, sand exploding up around him in a cloud, and he coughed hard against the sudden, brutal shift from cool static to blistering, dry heat pressing down from every direction at once.
He forced himself upright, squinting against harsh sunlight, and found endless dunes stretching in every direction, sand rippling toward a horizon that seemed to shimmer with heat distortion, not a single tree or landmark breaking it.
The air itself felt thick and dry, scorching his throat with every breath, and already he could feel sweat forming along his back beneath a shirt that had, until moments ago, been dry and comfortable...
"Great," he muttered, spitting sand from his mouth. "Love this already...."
"You’re telling me."
Mark’s voice came close by, and Lucas turned to find him a few yards off, already brushing sand from his hair and body with the particular disgust of someone who knew he was going to be finding sand in uncomfortable places for the rest of the day.
A third figure stirred nearby, and Lucas’s chest did a small, surprised flip of recognition as she pushed herself upright, coughing against the same dry heat.
"Pyra?"
She blinked at him, disoriented, before recognition settled into her expression.
"Lucas. You’re—" The girl— who was named Pyra, glanced around at the endless dunes, at Mark dusting off his hair a few feet away, and something like relief crossed her face despite the circumstances.
She let out a heavy sigh of relief... "At least it’s someone I know."
A system notification appeared in front of her and her expression shifted to something akin to shock.
"You awakened something didn’t you?" Lucas said, glancing at her, "What’d you get?"
Pyra held up both hands, flexing her fingers and watching them like they didn’t belong to her. "Three things, actually... I don’t really understand all of it yet."
She began listing.... "One lets me jump — like, actually jump, higher than should be possible. It called it Skyhop. Another one’s some kind of reflex boost. Either it makes everything move slower around me when it kicks in, or I just move faster, I honestly can’t tell which. Wind’s Edge that’s what it called that one. And the third..."
She flexed her fingers again, and thin, dark wicked claws extended slowly from her fingertips. "This is the third one. It’s called Talons."
Mark let out a low whistle. "Three abilities. Damn. That’s a whole toolkit."
"It’s a lot to process," Pyra admitted, retracting the claws with visible concentration, a faint shudder running through her at the sensation.
"You’re telling me," Mark said, glancing pointedly at Lucas. "This one over here’s still riding on a single ability, and here you are with a whole starter pack. Lucky aren’t you?"
"You’re one to talk. You got stuck with two abilities," Lucas said, pointing back at him. "I could just go ahead and say that I got two abilities too..."
"You have Ignition, which evolved," Mark said, "which you insisted last week still counts as one ability, no matter how many new tricks it learns. Can’t have it both ways, Princess."
Lucas grimaced. "Shiy. I hate that you remember that argument."
"I remember every argument." Mark grinned, and even Pyra managed a small, soft laugh despite everything, the tension of the fall easing slightly under the familiar rhythm of their banter.
"Is he always like this?" she asked Lucas, glancing at Mark.
"Unfortunately, yes."
"It’s part of my charm," Mark said, entirely unbothered. "Ask anyone. Well, ask anyone who likes me. There’s probably a growing list of people who’d disagree." He said that part looking at Lucas with a familiar grin...
"Growing very quickly, apparently," Lucas muttered.
[Ding!]
[New Zone Detected: Blazing Sands.]
The notification hung in front of all three of them, and Lucas exhaled slowly, taking in the dunes stretching endlessly in every direction with fresh, grim understanding.
"A desert," he said. "Of course it’s a desert."
"Could be worse," Mark shrugged.
"Could also have been significantly better," Lucas shot back.
"What? There’s no objective this time?" Mark asked as he stared at his system waiting for another notification to pop up.
[Ding!]
"Ahh here it is..."
[Primary Objective: Reunite with Faction members in your Faction Zone.]
"Great. Just gotta cross an entire desert to find everyone else." Lucas squinted toward the horizon, sweat already trickling down his forehead and the back of his neck. "No idea which direction that even is."
"One problem at a time," Pyra said, though her voice carried a thin edge of anxiety beneath the attempt at staying calm.
"First we figure out where we are. Then we figure out where we’re going."
"Sound logic," Mark said, shielding his eyes against the harsh light as he scanned the horizon for any landmark, anything at all. "Also deeply unhelpful, since I’m not seeing a single thing out here that tells us which way is which."
"Welcome to the Edge," Lucas said dryly. "Population: sand, beasts, and terrible decisions."
Pyra managed a small, laugh again feeling the tension visibly ease up a little bit. "You two do this a lot? The joking, I mean. Even when things are clearly terrible."
Lucas shrugged.
"Constantly," Mark said. "It’s a coping mechanism. Highly recommend it."
"Especially since you know things could go south literally at any moment"
They started walking, boots sinking into loose sand with every step and the heat pressing down harder the longer they moved, and Lucas found himself scanning the dunes for any sign of shade, water, or landmark that might tell them which direction actually led toward safety instead of deeper into nowhere but more sand and potential danger....
They’d taken maybe ten steps toward the nearest dune’s hill when the ground beneath them erupted.
Sand exploded upward in a violent plume, and Lucas’s instincts screamed recognition even before his eyes fully processed the shape tearing free from beneath the desert floor.
[Warning: Bora Class entity detected.]
[Evolution confirmed: Golem]
[Survival probability: 44%]
The beast was armored, a familiar silhouette burned into his memory from a dozen prior fights.
Except it wasn’t the same.
This Bora was larger, its hide a deep, sun baked bronze rather than the dull grey he remembered, plated segments overlapping in patterns that looked deliberately built for burrowing through sand.
Its tail ended not in the familiar bladed tip but in something wider, serrated, clearly adapted for slicing through something denser than open air.
And where the Bora he knew had three horns, this one bore five, curling backward along a skull that looked reshaped entirely for this new look.
Sand fell off its back in cascading sheets as it fully emerged, and Lucas noted, with a cold, sinking dread, that its legs looked shorter, more compact, built for speed across loose, shifting ground rather than the solid footing he had seen originally.
Every advantage he’d painstakingly learned about this creature’s original form suddenly felt questionable, maybe even useless, against something that seemed to have been reshaped from the ground up.
It reared up, sand cascading off its bronze plated hide, and let out a low, grinding shriek utterly unlike anything Lucas remembered from the creature’s original form.
The sound was deeper, resonant, carrying a note that seemed to vibrate through the sand itself.
"That is NOT the same Bora," Mark said, gauntlets flaring instinctively into place. "That is a very different, very much bigger Bora."
"Yeah, I can see that!"
Lucas stared at the notification, dread pooling cold in his very being— nothing like blistering heat pressing down around them.
Pyra had gone rigid beside him, claws already sliding free from her fingertips on pure instinct, eyes wide with a fear that made her body shudder
"That’s not the same beast," he said quietly, watching the creature rear up out of the sand, sizing up all three of them with unmistakable, patient hunger. "That’s not the same beast at all."
Mark shifted into a ready stance, gauntlets catching the harsh desert light. "Well. Guess we’re finding out the hard way what a Bora looks like when it’s had time to get a makeover"
[Skill: Ignition has been activated]
[Error]
[Skill has been compromised.]
[Ignition has been tampered.]
"Fuck." Lucas grimaced, [Ignition] sparking weak but present around his fists, the heat of the desert somehow making the flame feel more and more exhausting to sustain at every passing minute.
"Pyra, stay behind us until we get a read on how it moves. New beasts means new patterns, and none of us know this one yet."
She nodded, claws still extended, breathing fast but steady, and the three of them spread into a loose, defensive formation as the desert Bora circled once, testing the sand beneath its reshaped legs.
Somewhere beneath its bronze plated hide, muscles coiled tight and bulged, and Lucas braced himself for whatever came next, one more fight in a world that never seemed to run short of surprises every time they encountered something...
