The Villainess Harem Was Never Part of My Plan

Chapter 30: What Remains of Who I Was

Lilith kept them in Cinderveil for three more days, extending a hospitality Malachi assured them was unprecedented in his considerable memory, and Ethan spent much of that time in a strange, suspended state of mind, moving through the demon continent’s alien beauty while turning over the same unanswerable question again and again — if some version of me has died here before, in Cycles I don’t remember, then what does that actually make me now.

’I’ve spent months thinking of myself as an outsider who got dropped into someone else’s story,’ Ethan thought, walking beside Aurelia through Lilith’s luminous garden on their final evening in the demon queen’s territory, the amber sky overhead deepening into something that resembled dusk without ever quite becoming true darkness. ’What if that was never actually true? What if I’m just as trapped in this pattern as Iris is, and the only difference is I don’t remember it the way she does?’

[ Would Host like the System’s current assessment of this possibility? ]

’Yes,’ Ethan thought, grateful, not for the first time, for the System’s steady, if imperfect, presence in the middle of everything the past few days had upended.

[ Insufficient data to confirm or deny. Host’s memories of a prior life in an unrelated reality remain internally consistent and do not exhibit the fragmentary, impressionistic qualities Subject Azrael describes regarding her own cross-Cycle recall. This suggests, tentatively, that Host’s original-world memories are either genuinely accurate, or constructed with a completeness that itself raises questions about their origin. System cannot currently distinguish between these possibilities. Recommend Host avoid premature conclusions in either direction. ]

’That’s not comforting,’ Ethan thought.

[ System agrees. System does not currently possess comforting information on this subject. ]

Aurelia, walking beside him in thoughtful silence, finally spoke, her voice quiet in the garden’s strange, permanent twilight. "You’ve barely said a word since we left her audience three days ago," she said. "I understand why. I don’t think I’d have much to say either, if I’d just been told my entire understanding of my own existence might be incomplete."

"I don’t know what to do with it," Ethan admitted. "Everything I’ve built since I woke up in this world — every choice, every relationship, every version of myself I’ve become — it’s all been built on the assumption that I know where I actually come from. That I have one clear, stable truth underneath all the uncertainty this world’s thrown at me. If that’s not actually solid ground, I don’t know what is."

"Then let it be uncertain," Aurelia said, "without letting the uncertainty define who you choose to be regardless." She stopped walking, turning to face him fully, her pale eyes steady in the amber half-light. "I don’t know where you actually come from either, Ethan. I’ve accepted that I may never know for certain. But I know who you’ve been, every single day since I met you — the person who walked into a hallway to stop an injustice, who stood beside a Prime Acolyte against a man she trusted completely, who fought a warrior princess to a draw rather than simply lose or win cleanly, who has spent months chasing down the truth about a girl nobody else remembers, at real cost to his own safety and peace of mind. Whatever you were before any of that, whatever version of you might have existed in Cycles neither of us can access — none of that changes the person standing in front of me right now."

Something in Ethan’s chest loosened at the quiet, unwavering certainty in her voice, the same steady presence that had carried him through every crisis this world had thrown at him since the day they’d met.

"I don’t deserve you," Ethan said quietly.

"Probably not," Aurelia agreed, with the faint, dry humor that had become one of the things he treasured most about her. "But I’ve decided that’s not actually a disqualifying condition. Very few people deserve the things that matter most to them. They simply choose to be worthy of them, going forward, one day at a time." She reached out, taking his hand. "I’d suggest you do the same, rather than losing yourself in a question none of us currently have the tools to answer."

---

Lilith found them the following morning, before their scheduled departure back through the Veil, carrying a small, unassuming wooden box that she pressed into Ethan’s hands with a gravity that made clear its contents mattered considerably more than its plain exterior suggested.

"I want you to have this," Lilith said, "before you return to your world. I’ve kept it for longer than I can accurately account for, moved between more hiding places than I can remember, always with the vague, fragmentary sense that it mattered, without ever quite understanding why until you arrived and gave shape to everything I’d only sensed before."

Ethan opened the box carefully, and found within it a single, small object — a plain silver ring, unmarked by any crest or inscription, worn smooth by what looked like centuries of handling.

"I don’t understand," Ethan said, turning the ring over in his palm. "What is this?"

"I don’t fully know," Lilith admitted. "I only know that some fragment of memory, buried deep beneath the weight of however many Cycles I’ve lived through, insists this object matters, and insists it belongs with you rather than with me. Perhaps it belonged to you, in some prior iteration. Perhaps it belonged to Iris, and was somehow entrusted to me the way her portrait was entrusted to Vivienne. I cannot tell you with any certainty. I only know that when I hold it, I feel something I can only describe as recognition — the same recognition I felt the moment Malachi described your bearing to me, three days ago."

[ Attempting analysis of the object. ]

[ WARNING: partial system interference detected. Object appears to carry a dormant magical signature that resists standard analysis protocols. Recommend caution regarding direct magical testing. Passive observation suggests the ring’s dormant properties may be linked to memory preservation or transference — consistent with, though not confirmed as identical to, the mechanisms allowing Subjects Nocturne and Azrael to retain cross-Cycle recall. ]

’Another piece of the puzzle,’ Ethan thought, closing his hand carefully around the ring, ’that raises more questions than it answers.’

"Thank you," Ethan said aloud, meaning it more deeply than the simple words could fully convey. "For everything. For the honesty, for the alliance, for trusting us with this, whatever it turns out to actually be."

Lilith’s ancient, youthful face softened into something genuinely warm, the weight of centuries momentarily easing from her expression. "Find that girl, Ethan Ravenscroft," she said quietly. "Find her, and find out what actually happened before the First Cycle began, and when you do, come back and tell me, so that I might finally understand what I’ve spent longer than I can measure only half-remembering." Her molten eyes carried something fierce and hopeful beneath their ancient weariness. "And do try to survive this particular iteration, if you can manage it. I find I would very much prefer not to mourn you again."

---

The journey back through the Veil felt, if anything, more disorienting than the crossing into Cinderveil had been, the pressure against Ethan’s entire body accompanied now by a strange, vertiginous awareness of everything he’d learned in the past three days settling, uncomfortably, into the foundation of everything he thought he understood about his own existence.

Vivienne met them at the crossing point exactly where they’d left her, her expression shifting from carefully controlled worry to visible relief the moment they emerged, safe, from the thinning archway.

"You survived," Vivienne said, embracing them both with a warmth that felt entirely genuine despite her earlier careful composure. "I confess I spent considerably more of the past three days worrying than my centuries of practiced patience typically allow."

"We survived," Ethan confirmed, "and we found considerably more than I expected to."

He told her, as they made their way back through the twisted forest toward Nocturne Vale proper, the shape of everything Lilith had revealed, watching Vivienne’s expression cycle through shock, and grief, and finally something like grim, determined resolve as she absorbed the full scope of what the investigation had grown into.

"An entire pattern of repeating worlds," Vivienne said quietly, once he’d finished, "and you, potentially, trapped within it just as thoroughly as that poor girl. I confess, darling, I had rather hoped this investigation would eventually offer us clean answers. It seems, instead, to only offer larger and more troubling questions the deeper we dig."

"I know," Ethan said, the weight of the ring in his pocket a constant, physical reminder of everything still left unresolved. "But I’d rather have the troubling questions than the comfortable ignorance everyone else in this world has been living under. Whatever this actually is, whatever I actually am — I’d rather understand it, and face it honestly, than pretend the mystery doesn’t exist simply because the answer might be frightening."

[ Synchronization: 85%. ]

[ Flag 06: Resolved into ongoing alliance. Demon faction threat remains active and unresolved. New artifact acquired — origin and function under continued investigation. ]

Vivienne studied him for a long moment, something proud and fond settling into her ancient eyes, and reached out to rest a hand briefly against his shoulder as they continued their walk back toward the valley’s dark spires.

"Then let’s keep digging, darling," she said quietly. "Together, this time, the way you seem determined to insist we approach absolutely everything else."
