Chapter 128: Why Does It Feel Like He’s Reporting In?

In the room.

Sophie Wexler was still a little groggy when she woke up in the morning. She tried to stretch but felt like she was being restrained.

She pried her sleepy eyes open a crack.

The next second, her stretch froze mid-air as she took in her surroundings. A realization dawned on her, and her movements stiffened.

’Didn’t I decide to tell Cillian Forrest I’d sleep in the study after he finished his work last night?’

But Cillian hadn’t finished. And she remembered waiting while sitting on the edge of the bed. So how did she end up *in* the bed?

Sophie Wexler slowly looked down. In the next instant, she finally understood why she’d felt restrained while trying to stretch. The blanket was wrapped tightly around her, sealed up perfectly!

The blanket definitely hadn’t wrapped itself around her like this, and she was certain she hadn’t climbed into bed on her own.

So, who was responsible for all this? The answer was obvious.

After all, there was no one else in the house besides her and Cillian Forrest.

And now, after a whole night, it wasn’t just Cillian Forrest’s scent on the bed and the blanket anymore. Hers was there, too.

The two scents had mingled together, and for a moment, it was impossible to tell them apart.

At that thought, Sophie Wexler felt her heart begin to beat a little faster.

She quickly threw off the blanket and got out of bed.

She was even a bit cautious as she opened the door to leave. For some reason, she had a subconscious feeling that she didn’t want to run into Cillian Forrest right now. It just felt... weird.

Sophie Wexler first opened the door a crack and peeked her head out. The situation she’d been worried about hadn’t occurred at all—the living room was empty.

Not only was the living room empty, but the study was empty too.

However, just as she was tiptoeing around, a voice came from behind her. "Master!"

The voice made Sophie Wexler jump, but then she realized it was just Tammy.

Tammy tilted its round head, blinking its eyes at Sophie Wexler as it asked quizzically, "Master, what are you looking for?"

Sophie Wexler bent down until she was eye level with Tammy’s head and asked, "Tammy, where’s Cillian Forrest?"

"Reporting, Master. Cillian Forrest left at six this morning."

It was still charging at the time.

Hearing this, Sophie Wexler was surprised. She hadn’t expected him to leave so early.

’He must have had something important to do.’

Conveniently, with Cillian Forrest gone, she felt much more at ease than she had a moment ago.

Her belongings had already been delivered by the people from The Healer-class Association, so after washing up, Sophie Wexler changed her clothes.

She made herself some breakfast—or, to be more precise, lunch.

She had stayed up late last night, so she had also woken up late today.

As she was cooking, she thought of Cillian Forrest and sent him a message asking if he would be back for lunch.

This time, the reply came quickly: [Cillian Forrest: Not coming back.]

Sophie Wexler put down her communicator after seeing the message. ’He really is busy.’

She didn’t mind that Cillian Forrest had only replied with a simple three words. He was always concise, never using more words than necessary.

But what she didn’t expect was for her communicator to buzz again the very next second.

[Cillian Forrest: Sorry, something came up today, so I had to go out. I can’t come back to eat with you.]

Sophie Wexler: "???"

’Isn’t it normal for him to be unable to eat with me if he has something to do? Why is he apologizing? And why did he phrase it like he was supposed to be keeping me company?’

’When they ate together before, no one ever said anything about one person "keeping the other company."’

Before she could even reply, the next message arrived. [Cillian Forrest: I’ll try to be back as early as I can this afternoon.]

[Cillian Forrest: Do you have any plans after you eat?]

Sophie Wexler stared at the series of messages popping up on her screen and slowly blinked.

’What the hell? Why do I feel like I’m watching a boyfriend check in with his girlfriend, then promise to come back early in the afternoon to make up for neglecting her?’

A second later, she was startled by her own thought and quickly shook her head, trying to clear out the jumbled mess of ideas.

"An illusion, it’s just an illusion," she muttered.

"What are you thinking, Sophie Wexler? He’s just letting you know, that’s all."

’After all, they were living together now, weren’t they?’

’This is normal. Perfectly normal.’

After thoroughly brainwashing herself, Sophie Wexler finally picked up her communicator to reply: [Didn’t you say the guest room doesn’t have a bed? I don’t have anything to do after I eat, so I was planning to go out for a bit and buy everything we’re missing.]

She finished typing and sent the message.

For some reason, however, Cillian Forrest, who had been replying instantly just moments before, seemed to have vanished. The chat window remained empty for a long time.

Just as Sophie Wexler was thinking he must have gotten busy again, a reply came through.

[Cillian Forrest: The guest room is full of stuff. It hasn’t been cleaned out yet.]

Sophie Wexler was just about to say that it was okay, she could clean it out.

The next second.

[Cillian Forrest: Some of it is personal belongings. And some of it is from the military district.]

Sophie Wexler’s fingertips, poised to tap the screen, instantly froze.

[Cillian Forrest: Don’t worry about it. Just stay in the master bedroom for now. I’ll sort it out when I get back.]

Looking at this series of messages, the idea that had just formed in her mind was immediately extinguished.

If it was Cillian Forrest’s property, she really shouldn’t touch it without his permission, especially since some of it was from the military district.

Sophie Wexler gave up on the idea of buying a bed and slowly typed: [Okay.]

However, even though she’d dropped the idea of buying a bed, she still needed to get some daily necessities, especially bedding.

She didn’t mention this to Cillian Forrest. It wasn’t a big deal anyway, and she planned to go out for a look around after she finished eating.

But plans rarely go as expected.

Just as she finished eating, cleaned up, and was about to head out...

The doorbell rang.

Sophie Wexler: "???"

"Could Cillian Forrest be back already?" Sophie Wexler was puzzled. ’But if he’s back, why would he ring the doorbell?’

With that thought, she walked over to open the door. "Didn’t you say this afternoon..."

She didn’t even get to say the last few words. Seeing the person at the door, Sophie Wexler froze on the spot.

The reason was simple. Sophie Wexler looked down and saw a small person standing at her door.

They weren’t tall, but their features were remarkably delicate. They had golden eyes and a head of short, curly hair, which made their face look particularly cute.

Sophie Wexler was confused. ’Who is this?’

For a moment, her imagination ran wild.

’Could this be Cillian Forrest’s illegitimate child or something?’

As Sophie Wexler was observing the small person before her, they were observing her right back.

Their golden eyes scanned her, filled with curiosity.

Sophie Wexler asked, "Excuse me, who are you looking for?"

At the same time Sophie Wexler spoke, another voice piped up.

Shawn Thorne: "So you’re Cillian Forrest’s partner?"

Sophie Wexler blinked, still not used to that word. It took her a moment to adjust.

Then she answered, "If you mean his matched partner, then I suppose I am."

Shawn Thorne waved a hand dismissively. "Same difference."

Sophie Wexler: "..."
