Chapter 13: The Cold 800,000 in the Card
When they saw the official announcement, the retail investors who had sold earlier were beside themselves with regret.
They were all filled with immense remorse, wondering why on earth they had sold their Guanlan Automobile shares.
It was as if a shower of riches had rained down from the heavens, but they had put up an umbrella to block it.
"I was born to be a sucker."
Many couldn’t help but laugh at their own expense.
Before, just the talks of a collaboration had caused such a surge.
But now, the partnership was officially announced, and the details had been revealed.
Hua Zi was involved in nearly every crucial supply chain and was also responsible for design, marketing, and sales. Its terrifyingly massive user base was an utterly overwhelming blow to the traditional automobile industry.
As a result, this wave of growth was even more explosive than the last.
As expected, several consecutive days of hitting the limit-up threshold had Chen Mo grinning from ear to ear.
Although the gains slowed down after that, the stock still rose every single day.
...
Time flew by. In the blink of an eye, more than twenty days had passed since Chen Mo bought shares in Guanlan Automobile.
Guanlan Automobile’s stock price was still rising daily, but the gains were much smaller now—in the range of a few tenths of a percent to just over one percent.
Holding it long-term was a surefire bet, as it was obvious the stock would explode again once the car model from their collaboration hit the market.
But Chen Mo chose to liquidate his entire position.
He had thrown all his money into the stock, leaving himself with just enough for living expenses.
He had spent a good chunk of that over the past twenty-odd days, and now he needed money to rent a new apartment.
For most people, holding onto Guanlan Automobile stock as it slowly climbed would be an excellent choice.
But for him, there was no shortage of other "wealth codes" to be cracked.
In the time he’d spend waiting for Guanlan to slowly inch up, he could make far more on other stocks.
Today was Friday. Three weeks—fifteen trading days—had passed since that fateful Monday.
The share price back then was 20 yuan. Now, after a series of explosive surges, it had reached 60.84 yuan!
He had bought 130 lots, and the total value of his shares had now reached 791,000 yuan!
After deducting stamp duty, brokerage commissions, and transfer fees, his final take was 790,000 yuan.
His initial investment was 273,000 yuan, meaning his profit was 517,000 yuan.
A staggering rate of return of 190%!
’This time, I’ve really struck it rich.’
Chen Mo couldn’t resist pumping his fist in excitement, his eyes gleaming.
Even though he had been watching his earnings grow daily, the feeling of having the cash officially in hand was something else entirely.
Just over twenty days ago, even counting the recently-received 200,000 yuan reward, he had less than 300,000 in his bank account.
But now, adding in what was left of his living expenses, a cold, hard 800,000 yuan was sitting in his account.
It might not be as "cold" as President Lei’s four billion, but Chen Mo was still very satisfied.
Besides, who was to say four billion wasn’t a possibility for his own future?
Now that he had money, a lot of things would be much easier to handle.
He could rent a better apartment; he couldn’t stand living in his current place with the constant leaks from upstairs.
He could buy a car to get around. Taking ride-shares all the time wasn’t sustainable.
He could also get some better clothes and upgrade all his electronics.
In short, now that he had money, it was time for a spending spree.
RING~
Just then, his phone rang.
He didn’t even have to look to know it was a message from Xia Shiqing.
"You sold all your shares?"
Sure enough, when he opened WeChat, there was a message from Xia Shiqing.
"Are you cyber-stalking my account 24/7 or something?"
Chen Mo was speechless. The message had arrived the instant he completed the trade.
’Shouldn’t a department head have actual work to do?’
’Looks like opening an account at a different securities firm was a brilliant move.’
"It just means I’m paying close attention to you."
"I’ll treat you to dinner tomorrow, Saturday. And I have a little gift for you."
Seeing the invitation from Xia Shiqing, Chen Mo didn’t refuse.
...
That afternoon, Chen Mo was at home contacting a few real estate agents to arrange some apartment viewings for the next couple of days.
"Good luck comes to wish you good luck... good luck brings joy and love..."
Just then, his ringtone blared, and he saw an incoming call.
A glance at the caller ID showed it was Officer Feng.
"Hello, Mr. Chen."
"Are you home right now? You still have a commendation banner here at the station. We’ve been swamped with cases lately, but I’m not working overtime today and happen to be passing by, so I could drop it off. Are you available?"
A familiar voice spoke from the other end of the line.
"Oh, that’s too much trouble, but yes, I’m home now."
Only then did Chen Mo remember the commendation banner. It had been so long that he’d almost forgotten about it.
’Shame on me.’
"Great, I’m on my way."
After hanging up, Chen Mo quickly tidied up his apartment.
You know how it is.
About ten minutes later, there was a knock on the door.
Chen Mo opened the door, and as expected, he saw Officer Feng in her uniform.
She was holding a commendation banner inscribed with the words: [For Bravely Capturing a Fugitive and Ardently Safeguarding the Peace].
"Officer Feng, thank you for coming all this way."
Chen Mo warmly invited her inside. Unlike that foreigner upstairs, he had some manners.
"It’s no trouble. I was on my way home from work anyway," Officer Feng said, shaking her head as she stepped inside. "We’ve just been swamped with a few cases lately."
"Mr. Chen, this is your commendation banner. Thank you for your immense contribution to the last case."
Xiaofeng held the banner with both hands and presented it to Chen Mo with great solemnity.
"Even without the 200,000 yuan reward, I would have done the same,"
Chen Mo said, taking the banner with equal gravity.
"Mr. Chen, what’s that on the wall?" Xiaofeng suddenly spotted another banner hanging there.
It read: [For Reporting a Pyramid Scheme and Protecting Countless Homes, An Exemplar of Wisdom, Courage, and Responsibility].
"The police station gave me that one for reporting a pyramid scheme."
Chen Mo glanced at it and laughed. "With this one, I have a pair now."
"That one is more ’business casual,’ and this one is more ’athletic.’"
Xiaofeng remarked with a serious air after comparing the two banners.
"You have a great sense of humor, Officer Feng."
Chen Mo almost lost his composure.
"Let’s take a photo together with the banner. I need it for my report back at the station."
Xiaofeng still had one more task to complete.
Chen Mo was about to look for his phone stand when he saw someone walking past his open door and called out.
"Hello! Could you help us take a picture?"
The words had barely left his mouth when he saw that the passerby was a foreigner.
He froze for a second, realizing this must be his upstairs neighbor.
The foreigner was just coming back and had reached Chen Mo’s floor on the staircase.
Called out to by Chen Mo, the foreigner paused. Upon hearing the request to take a picture, he instinctively clutched the backpack on his shoulders.
Then, his eyes landed on Xiaofeng standing in her police uniform behind Chen Mo. His pupils constricted, and his entire body went rigid, muscles and nerves tensing in an instant.
"Hey there, could you help us take a photo? I see you have a camera, that’s perfect."
Chen Mo couldn’t help but smile when he noticed the camera lens peeking out of the foreigner’s backpack. ’A professional photographer, huh?’
"OK."
The foreigner’s eyes darted toward Xiaofeng, and not daring to act suspiciously, he obediently nodded.
A moment later, Chen Mo and Xiaofeng were standing side by side, holding the banner between them.
The foreigner stood opposite them, raised his camera, and snapped a few photos.
"Give me your email. I’ll send them to you."
The foreigner looked at Chen Mo, his eyes carefully avoiding Xiaofeng.
"Just get the officer’s email. You can send them directly to her," Chen Mo said, not wanting to be the middleman.
"No, give me yours. We’re neighbors, we should exchange contact information anyway."
The foreigner shook his head, not daring to ask for Xiaofeng’s email.
"Alright then."
Chen Mo reluctantly gave him his email address.
"Bro, have you found someone to fix that leak in your bathroom yet?"
Chen Mo asked, remembering the leak.
"I’m still negotiating with the landlord. Sorry about that."
The foreigner seemed preoccupied and eager to leave, heading straight upstairs.
"Officer Feng, I’ll forward the photos to you once he sends them to me,"
Chen Mo said to Xiaofeng with a helpless shrug.
"No problem."
Xiaofeng didn’t seem to mind.
Afterwards, Xiaofeng declined his invitation to stay for dinner. Chen Mo ate by himself, then lounged on the sofa and played some games.
Early the next day, Chen Mo received a message from Xiaofeng asking about the photos.
So, Chen Mo logged into his email to see if the foreigner had sent them yet.
Once in his inbox, he saw a new email that had just arrived that morning.
He clicked it open and found that it contained hundreds of photos.
’Did we take that many photos yesterday?’
Chen Mo was confused. ’Weren’t there only a few shots?’
’Why send so many?’
’Or did he send them by mistake?’
Curious, Chen Mo started browsing through the photos.
One look was all it took to leave him completely stunned.
’Dude... what the hell did you actually take pictures of?’
