Chapter 25: At Business KTV, Beauty Is Just the Threshold to Meet Me
"Today is a good day..."
Chen Mo stood in front of the bathroom mirror, styling his hair just as Mark had taught him.
He even hummed a little tune as he worked.
It was obvious he was in a genuinely good mood.
After all, he’d woken up to a 500,000 yuan payment first thing in the morning.
Who wouldn’t be in a good mood after that?
"Time to go apartment hunting!"
Once he was ready, Chen Mo headed straight out the door.
He had already made an appointment with a real estate agent yesterday to look at places today.
Besides, he was done fleecing the sheep upstairs; it was time to upgrade his living situation.
After heading downstairs, he noticed a few elderly men and women gathered together, still chatting about yesterday’s events.
"I heard that foreigner they arrested yesterday was a Vampire."
"My next-door neighbor Old Wang’s niece’s daughter’s boyfriend’s friend is an insider. That’s what he said."
"I saw that foreigner before. His skin was so pale, whiter than the spackle on my walls. You could tell he never saw the sun."
"That fits! Vampires can’t be in the sun."
"How terrifying! And this old man is anemic, too."
"..."
Walking by, Chen Mo overheard the elders’ discussion and almost burst out laughing.
He had expected the final version of the story to get a little wild, but he never imagined it would become this bizarre!
’A Vampire, really?’
’Who’s been teaching them this stuff?’
’Whiter than the spackle on the wall, my foot.’
’The guy was white to begin with; of course his skin was pale.’
’Besides, their apartment is so old. Is the spackle on their walls even white anymore?’
Chen Mo shook his head helplessly, a look of speechlessness in his eyes.
"Dad, what nonsense are you sprouting? The police already issued a notice. They arrested a spy, not some Vampire."
A middle-aged man steadied the old man, explaining with equal exasperation.
"Go home and take your medicine. Stop spreading rumors here."
The middle-aged man then led the old man straight home.
Seeing this, Chen Mo couldn’t help but smile.
He went to the community entrance to hail a cab. While waiting, he remembered hearing that the police had issued a notice, so he immediately opened Weibo to take a look.
He didn’t even have to search; the incident was trending right on the front page.
"Recently, acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, police successfully apprehended a spy. This spy..."
"For this, the police have awarded the concerned citizen a 500,000 yuan bounty. We also encourage the public to call the tip line if they discover any suspicious individuals taking photographs in restricted areas. Verified reports will be rewarded."
Sure enough, once the official blue-and-white notice was posted, everyone knew.
"So bold. That spy really wasn’t afraid of dying."
"A walking 500,000 yuan bounty. Why wasn’t I the one to run into him?"
"If spies were that easy to spot, would he have gone undiscovered until now?"
"I’m so jealous of the guy who reported him. 500,000 yuan! I could buy a whole apartment in my hometown with that."
"Why buy an apartment? Just drop 250,000 on an Audi A4 and use the rest at a Business K to find girls who ’don’t eat cilantro’."
"What’s wrong with ’not eating cilantro’? You think you’re worthy? You think a pretty girl would even look at you?"
"At a Business K, being pretty is just the minimum requirement to meet me."
"My friends told me there were lots of opportunities to make money in Modu. I didn’t realize they meant bounties for fugitives and spies."
"Well, are there a lot of opportunities or not?"
"..."
Chen Mo read the netizens’ comments below, a smile appearing in his eyes.
Some of the comments were actually pretty interesting.
And he had to admit, he agreed with the statement that there were plenty of opportunities to make money in Modu.
I mean, between the fugitive and the spy, he’d already made 700,000 yuan.
As he was reading the news, the cab he’d hailed arrived.
He got in, and it wasn’t long before he arrived at the meeting point with the agent.
"Mr. Chen, just as you requested, this apartment is in a great location with excellent surrounding amenities."
"It’s a two-bedroom, one-living-room unit with a kitchen and a bathroom. It’s very comfortable for a single person."
The agent led him upstairs and into the unit, giving him a brief tour of the interior and its furnishings.
"Not bad."
Chen Mo looked around. The renovation was still quite new, probably done within the last few years.
There were no strange odors, and it came well-equipped with furniture and appliances.
The lighting and ventilation were both good, and it was on a middle floor—not too high, not too low.
As for the surrounding amenities, this was a core district, so of course everything was well-developed.
"How much is the rent?"
Chen Mo was very satisfied with the apartment. He was renting, not buying, so ’good enough’ was all he needed.
"Housing prices are a bit higher in this area. If you’d like to rent this unit, the minimum lease is six months, with a one-month deposit and three months’ rent upfront. I can offer it to you for 6,600 yuan per month."
"This price isn’t too high. The owner also purchased an underground parking spot that you can use for free; you’ll just need to register it with property management."
The agent explained the price to Chen Mo.
"A little cheaper, and I’ll take it."
Chen Mo nodded knowingly.
"6,500?" the agent asked tentatively.
"Deal."
Chen Mo couldn’t be bothered to haggle further. It was just a matter of one or two hundred yuan a month.
He wasn’t short on cash and didn’t want to waste too much time on renting an apartment.
"Great. If you’re sure you want to rent it, we can sign the contract today. The owner happens to be off since it’s Sunday."
"Sounds good."
The agent loved clients like Chen Mo—decisive and not short on money.
As long as there were no problems with the apartment, they didn’t waste time with pointless chatter and signed the contract directly.
Soon, the agent contacted the owner.
The owner was nearby and arrived shortly.
The agent took out three copies of the contract, and Chen Mo and the owner signed them.
After paying the deposit and three months’ rent, the owner gave him the keys and the account information for the water, gas, and electricity.
They exchanged contact information in case any issues came up, and then the owner and the agent left.
’I’ll just pack up my things, and I can move in today.’
Chen Mo found that the apartment was already well-furnished; all he needed to do was move his luggage and personal belongings to be settled in.
He first hired a housekeeping service to help clean, then called a Huolala to help him move.
As a single man, he didn’t have a lot of stuff, relatively speaking.
He was busy all day, and by dinnertime, everything was done.
"Phew..."
Chen Mo let out a long sigh of relief as he lay on the soft, large bed.
He had spent the whole day apartment hunting, moving, and shopping. He could finally rest for a bit.
Too tired to cook, he ordered takeout. After eating, he lay in bed scrolling through short videos for a while before turning in early.
「The next morning」
He was fully revived.
After buying and eating some breakfast downstairs, he went straight to the bank.
He took a number and got in line.
It had to be said, the bank was truly packed on a Monday morning.
After a dozen or so people, it was finally his turn.
"Hello, how can I help you?" the teller asked politely.
"I’d like to make a transfer."
"You can do that on the mobile banking app."
"I need to transfer 500,000."
Chen Mo gave her a polite smile.
Of course, he knew he could make transfers on the mobile app, but the Bank of China’s app had a cumulative daily transfer limit of only 100,000.
Otherwise, why would he have bothered waiting until Monday to come to the bank?
"Is this a corporate or personal transfer?" the teller asked, slightly taken aback.
"Personal."
"May I ask who you’re transferring it to? There have been a lot of fraud cases recently..."
The teller asked, following procedure.
"To my parents."
Chen Mo wasn’t impatient; his tone was calm.
"Alright, please fill out the recipient’s account number, name, and the transfer amount."
Hearing this, the teller had no more questions.
Soon, Chen Mo received a text message from the bank. His account balance: -500,000.
But he didn’t feel the slightest bit of heartache.
As he walked out of the bank, just as he was about to call home, his phone rang.
He glanced at the caller ID, and a smile even happier than the one he’d worn when he received the 500,000 yuan bounty yesterday morning spread across his face.
A flash of longing passed through his eyes.
The call was from home.
