Chapter 34: Just Don’t Believe in Love, Not That I Don’t Understand It
The stock price hit its limit-up right at the market open.
Chen Mo was thrilled, but some people were decidedly not.
Many firms tried to buy in by placing orders at the limit-up price, but absolutely no one was selling.
They were all lining up, waiting for someone to sell.
Or maybe place another limit-up buy order tomorrow to see if they could get in, though the chances were slim.
Nearly all the institutional and retail investors who wanted to buy into Ruisheng Pharmaceutical were sighing in frustration.
It was like a gold mine was right in front of them, yet they couldn’t touch it.
It was agony.
If everyone was in the same boat, it would have been bearable; they might have even felt a little better about it.
But no, Xihe had mobilized its funds to buy the dip last Friday, and today they were making a killing.
And they were poised to earn even more.
Meanwhile, last Friday, these same people had been mocking Xihe, waiting to watch them fail.
Looking back now, Xihe’s move last Friday was a stroke of genius.
Talk about a fast boomerang.
To put it bluntly, if Xihe were a little more arrogant, they could just go to Lujiazui and shout:
"Every single one of you here..."
"...is garbage."
A firm in the same building as Xihe.
One of their employees had just gone downstairs to buy coffee when he ran into someone from Xihe. The Xihe employee immediately approached with a smug look on his face. Before the man could speak, he asked, "How did you know our Xihe bought into Ruisheng Pharmaceutical last Friday?"
"?"
’Dude, who asked you?’
"Weren’t you the one who opposed your supervisor back then?"
Someone questioned his credibility.
"If I hadn’t objected, how could I have highlighted and underscored Supervisor Xia’s unique and sharp vision, as well as her courage to take risks and bear responsibility?"
"We’re a team. Supervisor Xia is the MVP, so what’s wrong with me coasting to victory with her?"
The Xihe employee said this with a perfectly matter-of-fact expression.
"Your skin is as thick as a castle wall. You’re invincible, man."
The people from the other companies were stunned.
"Is there a stock called ’Castle Wall’ on the A-share market?"
Holding his coffee, the Xihe employee walked back upstairs, head held high and chest puffed out.
He left behind a crowd of people staring at each other in bewilderment.
...
Xihe.
Inside the main conference room.
Nearly all the senior executives, mid-level managers, and key employees were present.
Xia Shiqing was dressed in a professional suit that, combined with her outstanding figure and flawless looks, was a sight to behold.
Simply sitting there quietly, she was a naturally beautiful sight.
Whether it was the chairman, the various department heads, or anyone else, all eyes were on Xia Shiqing.
However, they weren’t just looking at a beautiful woman.
They were looking at Xihe’s greatest contributor!
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP...
At that moment, the chairman was the first to start clapping.
The applause swelled.
Immediately, the conference room erupted in thunderous, sustained applause.
Regardless of what everyone was truly thinking, at this moment, they all clapped with gusto.
Even Pan Kejia, her eyes filled with envy, jealousy, and hate, could only grit her teeth and force herself to clap hard.
She had practically popped the champagne already, but who could have expected Ruisheng Pharmaceutical to suddenly release such game-changing good news?
The stock price completely reversed course!
Not only was Xia Shiqing not finished, but she had shot to fame in the financial world with this single play.
At this rate, forget about ousting Xia Shiqing; it was more likely Pan Kejia who would be leaving, not her.
This was enough to make her break down.
"You came from Dandong..."
Just then, someone’s phone rang.
Although the call was immediately rejected and the phone silenced, the damage was done.
"Ahem..."
After the thunderous applause died down, the chairman cleared his throat, and the conference room immediately fell silent.
"Everyone saw the official announcement from Ruisheng Pharmaceutical last night. The stock hit its limit-up at market open today, and it will undoubtedly continue to skyrocket. Our industry peers are all scrambling to find a way to buy in."
"Last Friday, thanks to Supervisor Xia’s precise judgment, we at Xihe acted first, mobilizing funds to buy into Ruisheng Pharmaceutical. As of the market open today, we’re already up 10%, and the upcoming returns will be very substantial."
"By a conservative estimate, this single trade alone could account for over 20% of the company’s annual performance. Supervisor Xia’s contribution is monumental."
"This trade has also made a name for Xihe in the industry and put us squarely in the spotlight."
"Therefore, the company has decided to appoint Xia Shiqing as the Deputy Head of the Proprietary Investment Department, increase her fund allocation authority, and grant her a bonus based on a percentage of the net profit from this trade."
The chairman, beaming, affirmed Xia Shiqing’s immense contribution.
Their company was a small to mid-sized firm, with an annual net profit of only about three hundred million.
And if this Ruisheng Pharmaceutical stock was played right, this single trade could earn them more than 20% of their total annual net profit!
And that was a conservative estimate.
In sales terms, Xia Shiqing was, without a doubt, the top performer of the year.
A promotion and a raise were a given, and a bonus proportional to the profits was naturally also in order.
"Thank you for your trust and recognition, Mr. Chairman. I will continue to work hard to bring more success to Xihe."
Xia Shiqing slowly rose and offered some very official-sounding words of thanks, her tone calm.
Given the performance she had delivered for the company, a promotion and a raise were only what she deserved.
Besides, the chairman’s starkly different attitudes last Friday versus today made it difficult for her to offer any genuinely heartfelt thanks.
’If she were to thank anyone, it should be Chen Mo.’
Pan Kejia had been feeling incredibly resentful.
But when she heard that Xia Shiqing was being promoted, her eyes suddenly lit up.
’If Xia Shiqing is promoted, that means her position will be vacant.’
’Doesn’t that mean I have a chance?’
’The process wasn’t what I imagined, but as long as the result is the same, it’s fine.’
She could faintly imagine the smell of champagne again.
The eyes of several others also flickered as they had the same idea.
They had backers, too; it wasn’t impossible that they had a shot.
"As for your former position, it will be filled by..."
The chairman didn’t choose a successor from her original department, instead picking someone from another one.
Everyone had seen the minutes from the previous meeting. Pan Kejia had been firmly opposed.
The others who didn’t endorse Xia Shiqing’s decision might as well have opposed it.
In his eyes, these people were not competent enough to take over Xia Shiqing’s position.
Having backers didn’t change that.
Hearing this, the expressions on Pan Kejia and the others turned incredibly ugly, their faces etched with disappointment.
The hope that had just sparked in their hearts was instantly and mercilessly extinguished.
The champagne they were about to open was silently put back.
Pan Kejia silently cursed herself. ’When will I ever break this habit of popping the champagne at halftime?’
Xia Shiqing gave them a faint, indifferent glance.
’Before, these few might have been able to pressure or threaten her.’
’But from the moment she received that key to riches from Chen Mo, her status was beyond their reach.’
Pan Kejia and the others noticed Xia Shiqing’s gaze. They felt as if she were looking at clowns.
And they were the clowns in Xia Shiqing’s eyes.
Instantly, the expressions on Pan Kejia and the others soured even further, twisting with displeasure.
Afterward, the company announced Xia Shiqing’s new position to all employees.
Everyone congratulated Xia Shiqing one after another.
After moving into her new office, Xia Shiqing sat in her chair and gazed out the window, her eyes slightly unfocused.
’The key to riches Chen Mo gave her this time was simply too valuable.’
’It didn’t just help her get a promotion; it made her famous in the financial world overnight.’
’According to her personal creed, money was the ultimate expression of love.’
’It didn’t matter if Chen Mo genuinely liked her or just wanted to sleep with her.’
’After he gave her a key to riches this valuable...’
’...she defaulted to assuming that Chen Mo was genuinely in love with her.’
’The truest, most genuine kind of love.’
’Since that was the case, she naturally had to give some positive feedback in return.’
’After all, she didn’t believe in love, but that didn’t mean she didn’t understand it.’
’She might not have been in a relationship herself, but that didn’t mean she’d never seen how others dated, right?’
"I’ll wait for the weekend."
A thoughtful look flashed in Xia Shiqing’s eyes as she seemed to consider where they should go for a date on the weekend.
