Chapter 67: Blood Strain

The dual pressure did not arrive as one dramatic blow. It arrived as accumulation. By the third consecutive day of southern watch and external silence, the strain sat in the house like a change in weather. Ivan’s reports from the border road remained steady. Katya’s watch on the umbrella channel remained empty. The absence of movement on both fronts should have felt like relief. Instead it left Dmitri too sharp, too still, and increasingly short with anyone who wasted his time.

Anya saw the blood lag before he admitted it.

It showed in the way he read the same southern update twice. In the way he cut a captain off mid-sentence for circling a point already made. In the too-bright focus of his eyes when he stood over the external board and found nothing new to punish. The bond had held longer than in the early days, but dual-front tension burned through it faster than ordinary city work.

She waited until the study was empty before she said it.

"You’re thinning."

Dmitri did not turn from the map. "I am managing."

"That is not what I asked." Anya closed the door fully behind her. "The southern line is stable. The probe is live. There is no immediate fire requiring the worst version of you. Which means if we take the bond back up, we do it under terms, not as an emergency correction after you have already started cutting too hard."

Now he turned. The look he gave her was all hunger under control, the old obsession rising the moment the subject became her blood. "You think I waited too long."

"I think you were trying to prove you could outrun the lag through structure alone." She crossed the room and stopped in front of him. "You can’t. Not with two fronts. Not when one of them is a foreign market that still lists me as priority."

Dmitri’s jaw flexed. For a second she expected argument. Instead he exhaled and rested both hands on the back of a chair, head slightly bowed.

"I can feel it," he said. "The precision going dirty at the edges. I wanted to finish the local hand from the depot before I took more from you."

"And did you finish it?"

"Almost."

Anya stepped closer. "Almost is when the lag becomes dangerous. We do it tonight. Planned. Not stolen between reports. And after that, you stop pretending the dual lines remove the cost of the bond."

His eyes lifted to hers, dark and absolute. "You are setting terms again."

"I am keeping the ones you already accepted." She held his gaze. "If my blood is going to carry you through this hunt, then it stays a decision we make together. Not a private switch you flip when the city gets loud."

Silence stretched between them. Then Dmitri nodded once, stiff but real.

"Tonight," he said.

"Tonight," she agreed.

The rest of the day continued under that agreement. Ivan reported a possible soft associate of the depot subcontract still moving in the industrial belt. Katya marked a delayed foreign acknowledgment on a side channel that might or might not connect to the umbrella. The dual structure absorbed both without forcing an immediate crisis. Through it all, Anya felt Dmitri’s attention returning to her in shorter and shorter intervals, the bond need rising under his discipline like heat under metal.

They closed the private wing early. No final board review. No last call unless the house was burning. Anya locked the bedroom door while Dmitri stood by the window with his jacket already discarded and the lag written into the taut line of his shoulders.

"Come here," she said.

He did. The first kiss was rough with held-back need, his hands gripping her waist hard enough to betray how long he had been containing it. Anya met him fully, fingers in his hair, refusing to let the moment become only his desperation. When she bit his lower lip, a deep sound left him.

"You waited longer than you should have," she murmured against his mouth.

"I know."

He pulled her dress up and off in one impatient motion, mouth already descending to her throat, her collarbone, the curve of her breast. Anya gasped as he sucked hard at her nipple, his other hand shoving into her underwear and finding her pussy already wet. Two fingers pushed deep inside her without delay.

"Dmitri"

"Louder," he said against her skin, fingering her with thick, focused strokes. "I need this as much as the blood."

He worked her until she was moaning openly, thighs trembling around his hand. When she came the first time, it was with her forehead pressed to his shoulder and his name broken on her breath. Dmitri did not give her long to recover. He stripped the rest of their clothes, pushed her back onto the bed, and spread her legs wide.

For a second he only looked at her flushed, open, his before rubbing the head of his cock through her soaked folds and thrusting in to the hilt.

Anya cried out. "Fuck Dmitri"

He fucked her deep and hard from the start, one hand locked under her thigh, the other braced beside her head. The bed shifted under the force of it. Anya met every thrust, moaning without restraint as his cock drove into her pussy again and again.

"Say it," he growled.

"Dmitri"

"Again."

"Dmitri please!!!!!!!!"

He dragged a second climax out of her with ruthless precision, then followed her over, burying himself fully as he came with a rough, shuddering sound. For a moment they stayed locked together, breathing hard.

Then Anya turned her head and offered her throat.

Dmitri hesitated only long enough to meet her eyes and confirm the terms still held. The bite was controlled. The draw of blood was measured. She felt the change move through him almost immediately heat, clarity, the lag burning out of his system as the bond took hold again. He took only what they had agreed, sealed the place with his mouth, and rested there with his breath unsteady against her skin.

Afterward he remained over her, forehead pressed to hers, the worst of the strain finally eased.

"The dual lines hold better when you are not fighting yourself," Anya said quietly.

Dmitri’s hand moved slowly along her side. "I know."

"Then remember it tomorrow when the southern road or the umbrella tries to make you choose speed over accuracy."

A faint breath left him, almost a laugh and not quite. "You are becoming very hard to argue with."

"Good."

Outside their private wing, the house continued under dual watch. The Sokolovs remained quiet for now. The foreign channel remained patient. But inside the bedroom, the bond had been restored under Anya’s terms through sex, through blood, through the clear understanding that the hunt ahead would demand both their bodies and their discipline.

And for tonight, at least, the lag was gone.
