Chapter 42: Cost of Progress

The convoy returned to the mansion under heavy silence. Two men were carried in on stretchers. One had taken a round through the upper thigh and was losing more blood than the field dressing could stop. The other was unconscious from a head impact against the pavement during the extraction. The smell of gunpowder, sweat, and iron followed them into the lower medical bay.

Anya stayed with them longer than she needed to. She helped the doctor cut fabric away from the wound, held pressure when told, and watched the injured man’s face tighten each time the forceps moved. It was not the first time she had seen blood in this life. It was the first time in a while that the blood belonged to men who had followed her order into a building.

Dmitri stood near the doorway, speaking quietly with Katya. His voice never rose. That made it worse. When he was loud, the anger had somewhere to go. When he was quiet, it settled into something colder and more precise.

"They shouldn’t have been able to reinforce that fast," Katya said. "Someone fed them timing or route information."

"I know." Dmitri’s eyes moved once over the medical bay and then away. "Pull every communication from the southern captains in the last forty-eight hours. If there is a leak, I want it found before we move again."

Anya washed her hands at the metal sink, watching the water turn faintly pink before it cleared. When she finally stepped out into the corridor, Dmitri was waiting.

"You did what was required," he said.

"That doesn’t make the cost lighter."

"No," he agreed. "It doesn’t."

They walked together toward the upper floor. The mansion felt different after a messy operation. The staff moved more carefully. The guards spoke less. Success with losses always carried a particular silence.

In their private kitchen, Anya poured water into a glass and forced herself to drink. Dmitri removed his jacket and set it over the back of a chair. There was dried blood on the cuff. Not his.

"How bad is the damage to the Orlov storage?" she asked.

"Significant. They lost product, weapons, and face. That part worked." He braced his hands on the counter. "The problem is the message they sent back. They can still reach us when we move."

Anya studied his profile. "You’re going to answer harder."

"Yes."

"And soon."

"Yes."

She set the glass down and crossed the small space between them. "Then we do it properly. No more half-measures on the southern line."

Dmitri turned his head toward her. For a moment the cold focus in his eyes softened, just slightly, as if the fact of her standing there after the raid still mattered more than he would ever say in front of anyone else.

"You held the rear line longer than most of my captains would have," he said.

"I had to."

"I know." He reached out and brushed his thumb once along her cheekbone, a brief contact that carried more weight than the gesture itself. "Get some rest while you can. Tonight won’t be quiet."

By evening the mansion had shifted into preparation mode. The two injured men were stable. The leak investigation was already producing names that needed closer checking. In the war room, the map of the southern districts had changed. New markers. New gaps. New opportunities created by the damage of the previous night.

Dmitri wanted one decisive strike before the Orlovs could reorganize.

Anya stood beside him as Katya listed the remaining high-value targets. The vehicle depot was still the strongest option. Hit that, and the Orlovs would lose mobility across several southern routes at once. The risk was higher. So was the reward.

"They’ll expect a second move," Katya said. "They may even want it."

"Then we don’t give them the one they expect," Dmitri replied. "We go deeper than the depot. Their coordination house near the river. If we cut that, the depot becomes isolated."

Anya leaned over the map. "That location is more protected."

"Yes."

"And if it goes wrong, we don’t get a clean extraction."

Dmitri looked at her. "Then we don’t let it go wrong."

There was a long pause before she nodded.

Later, after the planning session broke apart into smaller tasks, Anya found Dmitri alone on the covered balcony outside their private wing. The night air was cold and carried the distant noise of the city. He had a glass of vodka in one hand, barely touched.

"You’re bleeding yourself thin," she said.

He didn’t deny it. "If I give them time, they recover. If I push now, I still have the advantage."

Anya moved to stand beside him, close enough that their shoulders almost touched. "And the blood?"

He was quiet for a moment. They both understood what she was asking. The operations were growing heavier. The margin for error thinner. There were nights when the edge her blood gave him was the difference between control and disaster.

"I’ll need it before we move," he said finally.

Anya turned to face him fully. "Then take it properly. Not like a man stealing something in a rush."

Something dark and intent moved through his eyes. He set the glass down on the stone ledge and stepped into her space. One hand slid into her hair, the other settled at her waist, and he kissed her with the slow certainty of someone who already knew the answer.

The kiss deepened in stages. What began as contact turned into hunger. Anya’s back met the wall beside the balcony door as Dmitri’s mouth moved from her lips to her jaw and then her throat. His hand pushed under her top, palm warm against her skin, fingers spreading over her ribs before rising to cup her breast.

"Inside," she breathed.

They barely made it to the bedroom.

Dmitri undressed her with focused impatience, mouth returning to hers between every layer of fabric. When he got her onto the bed, he didn’t waste time with softness. He dragged her to the edge, pushed her thighs apart, and buried his mouth between them with a low sound of need. Anya’s back arched hard as his tongue worked over her clit, then lower, tasting her with deliberate intensity. He held her hips down when she tried to move and kept going until her thighs trembled and her first orgasm broke against his mouth.

Only then did he rise, wipe his mouth with the back of his hand, and push into her in one deep thrust.

Anya cried out, fingers digging into his shoulders. Dmitri set a hard rhythm immediately, the bed shifting under the force of it. Each stroke was deep and controlled, his eyes locked on her face as if measuring every reaction.

"You give me this," he growled against her mouth, "and I end them."

"Then take it"

He did. One hand pinned her wrist above her head. The other gripped her thigh hard enough to leave marks as he drove into her. The second climax hit her harder than the first, tearing a broken sound from her throat. Dmitri followed with a rough groan, burying himself fully as he came.

Afterward they stayed tangled in the sheets, the room quiet except for their breathing. Dmitri’s hand moved slowly along her spine, possessive even in rest.

"We move before dawn," he said eventually.

Anya’s eyes were closed, but her voice was steady. "I’ll be ready."

Outside, the southern districts waited under the dark.

Inside, the next strike had already been decided.
