Chapter 97: The Prescott Family Forgives the York Family
But she clearly saw the flash of embarrassment on Miles York and Alice Cole’s faces. They were both at a loss—they didn’t even have Arthur Prescott’s phone number!!!
The receptionist had clearly noticed. "I’m sorry, but you can’t go in without an appointment."
At this point, it was clear they couldn’t go in. They would have to wait, just like before. But waiting here was completely different from waiting at Prescott Manor.
Waiting at the manor gate, they might at least be noticed. But waiting here? They could wait for days and nights and likely go unnoticed. Besides, Arthur Prescott took a private elevator from the top floor directly to the underground parking garage.
And they’d need a security guard’s permission just to get into the parking garage!
Miles York’s gaze fell on a sofa not far away, and his eyes lit up. "Excuse me, could we possibly sit on that sofa and wait?"
"You may, but only for half an hour. After that, you’ll have to leave."
This was their company’s lobby. They couldn’t just let people without appointments sit here indefinitely. If sitting here meant you could eventually see the CEO, then everyone would just sit here and wait. What would that look like?
"Fine, half an hour it is." The three of them walked over to the sofa and sat down.
Watching people come and go, Brooke York felt even more embarrassed than she had at the gate of Prescott Manor.
At the manor, at least it was just the gate guards watching. Here, there was the receptionist, other staff, employees coming and going for work or running errands—all of them could see the three of them sitting there.
In contrast to Brooke York’s embarrassment, Miles York and Alice Cole didn’t feel awkward at all. They considered themselves Arthur Prescott’s in-laws, so they saw no problem with sitting here and waiting for family. ’Once their children were married, all the employees here would have to treat them with the utmost respect.’
Ten minutes passed, and there was still no sign of Arthur Prescott coming down.
"Dad, Mom, maybe we should just go back. Mr. Prescott probably isn’t coming down."
A flicker of doubt crossed Alice Cole’s face. "He’s right, honey. He’s upstairs working. Why would he come down for no reason? It’s already been ten minutes. I don’t want that receptionist to have to come over and kick us out!"
"You’re both being too soft," Miles York scoffed. "You think the receptionist would really dare to kick us out? Would our own company do that? All visitors are guests. Otherwise, why would they put these sofas here?"
"Besides, do you really think the receptionist wouldn’t report our arrival to Arthur Prescott? That’s impossible. She’s probably already called him, just like at the Prescotts’ place. He’ll have us come up in a minute."
After Miles York snapped at them, Brooke York fidgeted with her clothes. ’She knew the Prescott Family’s rules. They really *would* kick people out. She couldn’t just sit here and be humiliated any longer.’
An idea on how to escape the impending awkwardness quickly formed in Brooke York’s mind. "Dad, Mom, I’m going to the restroom."
"Go on, go on!" Miles York urged impatiently. "Just hurry back. Mr. Prescott might come down any minute."
Brooke York nodded, stood up, and quickly walked away—only her path led straight out the main entrance of the Prescott Group building.
"There’s a restroom right inside, why is she going outside?" Miles York said, looking at the restroom sign just around the corner opposite them.
"Brooke probably didn’t see it and thought she had to find one outside," Alice Cole explained.
Once outside, Brooke York looked around, searching for a place where she could hide but still see whether her parents would be kicked out.
She spotted a boba tea shop nearby. Its large floor-to-ceiling windows offered a clear view of the building entrance, she could get a drink, and there were spots against the wall where she could stay out of sight.
Brooke York hurried into the boba tea shop, ordered a milk tea, and sat down. As she drank the ice-cold tea, she finally felt like she was coming back to life. She didn’t even know what to call a day like today.
She had never been so mortified, not even back in the countryside. Today had truly been the height of humiliation.
’But watching Miles York and Alice Cole get thrown out would be the perfect way to vent some of her frustration.’
The thirty minutes were up. The receptionist glanced at the time, left her desk, and walked toward the couple.
"Honey, look, the receptionist is coming," Alice Cole whispered, leaning closer to Miles York. ’She was sure this woman was coming to kick them out.’
"No, she’s probably telling us we can go up. Arthur Prescott must have called," Miles replied. "And that rotten girl, Brooke, did she fall in the toilet? She’s still not back!" Seeing that Brooke still hadn’t returned, his resentment toward her grew.
Alice Cole kept looking outside, wishing Brooke York would hurry back.
"Sir, Ma’am, your half-hour is up," the receptionist said clearly to Miles York and Alice Cole, wearing a professional smile.
Neither Miles York nor Alice Cole had expected to actually be told to leave after exactly thirty minutes.
"Um, could you possibly give us another half-hour?" Miles York tried to bargain.
"I’m sorry, but no."
By now, several security guards were looking their way. It was obvious that if they didn’t leave, a single gesture from the receptionist would have the guards rushing over to escort them out.
"Honey, let’s just go!" Alice Cole was mortified now. A few passersby were glancing over with confused expressions.
"You really can’t just call your CEO for us?" Miles York asked, making one last, desperate attempt. ’If he couldn’t see Arthur Prescott and get him to spare their company, it wouldn’t last much longer.’
The receptionist shook her head. "No."
"Fine, then!" Miles York turned and walked toward the entrance, and Alice Cole hurried to follow.
Halfway through her boba tea, Brooke York saw Miles York and Alice Cole walk out, looking completely dejected.
A smirk played on her lips. ’Haha, so you got kicked out. Serves you right. It’s about time you got a taste of this feeling yourselves.’
She took a large gulp of her tea. ’She knew it was almost her turn to take the stage.’
"Honey, what do we do now?" Alice Cole asked Miles York anxiously.
"What do we do? What do we do? You’re asking me? Who should I ask? This is all your ’good’ daughter’s doing!" Miles York roared.
"What do you mean, ’my’ good daughter? Brooke is your daughter too!" Alice Cole retorted, sick of how Miles York always spoke as if she had given birth to their daughter all by herself.
Miles York was about to say more when his phone suddenly rang. He pulled it out and saw it was a call from his secretary. He answered, and her voice came through immediately: "Sir, the Prescott Group is no longer targeting our company."
"Really?" Miles York couldn’t believe it.
"Yes, really. But they also said we should thank a Miss Felicia."
Miles York understood. It was on Chloe York’s account that the Prescott Family was willing to let them off the hook.
"Alright, I understand. I’m heading back to the company right now." After hanging up, Miles York prepared to leave.
"Honey, where are you going?"
"Back to the company. They said the Prescott Family has backed off and that we have Chloe York to thank." Miles York shook off Alice Cole’s hand and left, but from his expression, you could tell he was quite happy.
After all, the trouble with the company had been tormenting him for nearly a day and a night.
