Chapter 90: Helping a Little Girl
Ethan Prescott was just as shocked. ’Aren’t girls supposed to be obsessed with maintaining their figures?’
He had once gone out to eat with Brooke York, and she had put down her utensils after just two bites, saying she was full. It really was just two bites. He had assumed all girls had such small appetites, and that was why they were all so thin.
But now, seeing how much Chloe York could eat, he was in utter disbelief. ’Apparently, girls can eat a lot!’
Suddenly sensing eyes on her, Chloe York looked over to find both Sophia Quinn and Ethan Prescott staring at her, their faces a mask of shock.
It finally dawned on her. "Sorry, am I eating a bit much? But I can’t help it. I just have a huge appetite!"
Couldn’t argue with that!!!
"Not at all! A good appetite is a blessing. Girls should eat more. If you’re too skinny, you could get malnourished," Sophia Quinn said, quickly recovering.
"That’s right, eat up!" If it hadn’t been inappropriate, Ethan Prescott would have served Chloe York some food himself.
Chloe York didn’t stand on ceremony and began to feast. ’Are you kidding me? The delicacies of this world must not be betrayed.’ Besides, tomorrow was the weekend. She would eat her fill, then go home for a good rest.
After the meal, Sophia Quinn drove Chloe York home. Once she was back and had gotten ready for bed, Chloe York crashed onto her mattress and fell fast asleep.
The next day, while Chloe York was still lying in bed, she received a task from the Scholar System.
Scholar System: [Host, go to the library and study for two hours today. Reward: Wisdom value +5, Memory Value +5.]
’A task!’ Chloe York shot upright in bed. In fact, she had already decided to go to the library today. Studying in her rented apartment could be a bit noisy sometimes, with children playing downstairs.
Besides, there were some problems she didn’t know how to approach, and she thought she might find a solution in one of the library’s books.
After getting ready, Chloe York searched on her phone for a nearby library. She quickly found one, just seven or eight bus stops from her apartment.
She left her apartment and walked to the bus stop. The bus arrived after only a minute’s wait, and she got on, heading toward the library.
Since it was the weekend, the library was quite crowded.
Chloe York found a few books in the relevant section, then settled into a seat by the window to read and take notes.
"Chloe, what a coincidence. I didn’t expect to see you at the library today."
Hearing the voice, she looked up and saw Evan Shaw. Come to think of it, she hadn’t seen him in over a week.
"It is a coincidence!" Chloe York was also genuinely surprised to run into Evan Shaw anywhere outside of school.
She rarely bumped into classmates off campus.
"Is this seat across from you taken? Mind if I sit here?" Evan Shaw asked, noticing the empty chair opposite Chloe York. ’I didn’t see Stella Winters,’ he thought. ’That must mean she isn’t here, and Chloe’s alone.’
"Of course."
Chloe York gathered the books on the table and moved them next to her, making room for Evan Shaw.
Evan Shaw set down his backpack and placed the books he had checked out on the table as well.
The two of them worked quietly, solving their own problems and reading their own books without disturbing each other.
Occasionally, Evan Shaw would glance up to see what problem Chloe York was working on. Whenever he saw her brows furrow in confusion, he would lean over and explain the parts she didn’t understand.
They studied together in quiet harmony.
Godly Rich System: [Host, look up. Straight ahead, at the bookshelf, a little girl can’t reach a book and is jumping for it. It looks a little dangerous. Hurry and help her. You will be rewarded with two hundred yuan upon completion.]
Hearing the Godly Rich System, Chloe York looked up and saw, just as it said, a little girl trying to grab a comic book from the third shelf. She was too short to reach it, so she was trying to jump up and get it.
But as she jumped, she was holding onto the bookshelf with one hand, causing it to wobble. It looked extremely dangerous.
Chloe York didn’t hesitate. She stood up and went over to help.
Evan Shaw, who had been focused on his studies, noticed Chloe York get up and leave. He assumed she was going to grab another book, so he didn’t think much of it.
"Hey, little one, is this the book you want?" Chloe York asked gently, steadying the wobbly bookshelf with one hand to prevent it from tipping while pointing to the book with the other.
"Yes, Miss! Can you get it for me?" The little girl seemed to know Chloe York was there to help and answered sweetly. She had two dimples when she smiled, and her big eyes looked like a pair of large, dark grapes.
"Of course!" Chloe York took the book down and handed it to the little girl. "Here you go, sweetie. Here’s your book."
"Thank you, Miss!" The girl was overjoyed to have the comic book and thanked Chloe York.
Godly Rich System: [Congratulations, Host, on completing the task. Reward: Two hundred yuan.]
"Miss, you’re so pretty!"
"Thank you for the compliment, sweetie."
"Miss, are you married?" the little girl asked, her big eyes wide with curiosity.
Chloe York froze, not expecting a child to ask her such a question. She quickly explained, "Oh, I’m still in school. I’m a minor, so I’m not married!"
"Oh, you’re not married? In that case, can you consider my uncle? Even though my uncle is really ugly, he’s very rich. And he likes pretty women, especially pretty women like you. He’ll give you lots of money to spend."
Chloe York was shocked that a little girl could be so articulate and know about such things. ’Is this one of those genius babies from a novel?’ she wondered.
’Which main characters’ kid is she?’
"I’m sorry, sweetie, but I’m not looking to date right now. But thank you for the kind thought! You should go find your parents now, okay? I have to get back to what I was doing!"
In any case, she had completed the task by helping the little girl get the book. Chloe York turned to head back to her seat.
Watching Chloe York leave, the little girl felt a pang of disappointment. ’I really like that miss. I wish she could be my auntie!’
When Evan Shaw saw Chloe York return empty-handed, he was puzzled. "Weren’t you getting a book? Why’d you come back with nothing?"
"I wasn’t getting a book," Chloe York said without elaborating, turning her attention back to her work. Seeing this, Evan Shaw didn’t press her for details.
The two returned to their quiet state, each focused on their books. Although Evan Shaw had feelings for Chloe York, this was a crucial time for their studies. Everything else could be put on the back burner; academics came first.
"Uncle, Uncle! A super pretty lady just helped me get a comic book! I really like her!" the little girl chattered, running back to Evan Shaw’s side and happily sharing what had just happened.
"Nora, your mother told you no comic books. And you went and got one anyway. Now your uncle is going to get angry," Evan Shaw said, looking at his lively niece and feigning anger.
"Oh, don’t be like that, Uncle! It’s not often I get to come out with you. Spoil your favorite niece a little and let me read it. We won’t tell Mom, okay?"
Adrian Kane said nothing, merely staring at Nora with a stern expression.
