Chapter 68: Chloe York and Brooke York’s Scores Are Almost the Same?
"Have the results for the second mock exam come out yet? How did you do?" Miles York asked when he saw Brooke York come home. At the end of the day, if his child had good grades and got into a top university, it would make him look good.
He could even use her university acceptance banquet to entertain clients and drum up some business.
"Is there even a need to ask? Our Brooke is definitely first in her class, right? The real question is her rank in the entire grade. Brooke, what’s your grade ranking? Tell your dad!" Alice Cole said, brimming with confidence.
Brooke York wrestled with how to break the news about her scores. She hadn’t expected Chloe York’s recent transformation to have such a huge impact on her.
Chloe York’s score was only a few points behind hers. In subject after subject, Chloe York was nearly her equal. If this kept up, there was no doubt she would be surpassed by Chloe York.
When Brooke York remained silent, Miles York continued to wait expectantly. Alice Cole prompted her, "Brooke, why aren’t you talking? Is it because Chloe York’s grades are so terrible that you’re afraid if you announce your own great scores, we’ll be too disappointed in her?"
Before Brooke York could answer, Alice Cole went on, "Oh, you silly girl. You’re our biological daughter. We’re happy when *you* do well. Why should we care about Chloe York?"
Upon hearing this, the look in Miles York’s eyes as he gazed at Brooke York changed.
Reading the meaning in her father’s eyes, Brooke York grew even more hesitant to answer. "My score was the same as last time. I need to go study. I have to review more, there’s still a third mock exam!"
"Alright, go on up and study hard. I’ll have the housekeeper bring some fruit up for you later. Make sure you eat some."
"Okay, Dad, Mom. I’m heading up!"
"Alright!"
Brooke York practically ran up the stairs, terrified that a moment’s delay would give her away.
"What’s with her? She seems a little preoccupied tonight. Could she be upset that her score didn’t improve and was just the same as last time?" Alice Cole wondered aloud as she watched Brooke York rush upstairs.
"Let her relax a little. She shouldn’t push herself so hard."
"Of course. My daughter gets good grades whether she’s stressed or relaxed. See? It’s the same as last time. She never regresses, not even a little!"
A thought occurred to Miles York, and he asked, "Doesn’t the school send the results to you?"
"They do, but it’s usually later. For the first mock, they didn’t come in until after 9 p.m."
"What, you don’t trust Brooke? I can show you the scores her homeroom teacher sent over last time. She barely lost any points!"
As she spoke, Alice Cole picked up her phone, intending to show Miles York the first mock exam results from the homeroom teacher.
"It’s not that I don’t trust her. I just want to know what Chloe’s score is."
Hearing that, Alice Cole immediately snatched her phone back. "Her? She’d be lucky to break twenty. She even made a bet with her teacher... she truly has no sense of her own limitations. See? No matter how you raise a child, it’s never the same as your own flesh and blood. Our own is so outstanding, even without being raised by our side."
Just as she finished speaking, her phone chimed with a notification. She saw the sender’s name and exclaimed in delight, "A message from the homeroom teacher!"
Alice Cole unlocked her phone and was shocked to see scores in the eighties for every subject. "How did Brooke only score in the eighties in every subject? She was getting scores in the nineties before!"
Hearing this, Miles York came over to look. He saw at a glance that the name on the report was Chloe York’s. "These are Chloe’s. I had no idea she did so well this time!"
Alice Cole let out a sigh of relief when she heard it was Chloe York, but she still couldn’t believe it. "Chloe York scored in the eighties? Don’t tell me she actually got the principal to pull some strings for her as a favor. That dimwit has been dead last every single year. Her getting scores in the eighties? That’s ridiculous."
Alice Cole simply refused to believe Chloe York could score in the eighties.
"Just because you don’t believe it doesn’t change the fact that she scored in the eighties on every subject!"
Miles York was happy to see Chloe York’s good grades. It would be ideal if Chloe could work a little harder and also get into a good university. Then, hosting an acceptance banquet for two daughters would be even more prestigious.
"Just wait for Brooke’s results to come out. You can compare them yourself. These eighty-point scores are nothing," Alice Cole said, completely dismissive of Chloe York’s achievement.
If Chloe York were still her biological daughter, she probably would have jumped for joy at a score in the eighties.
But now that she knew Chloe York wasn’t her own flesh and blood, she wouldn’t feel happy or proud even if she scored a perfect one hundred.
"Fine. I want to see Brooke’s scores." Miles York had never actually looked at Brooke York’s grades himself; he’d only ever heard Alice Cole talk about them. This time, he would see exactly how well Brooke York had done, and whether her scores were truly so amazing that, as Alice Cole boasted, Chloe York’s eighties were beneath contempt.
Just as he finished speaking, the phone chimed again. This time, it was Brooke York’s results.
"See? Brooke’s results are here. I don’t even need to look. I’m sure every subject is ninety-five or above."
Alice Cole shoved the phone screen right in Miles York’s face, feeling no need to look at it herself.
The smile and anticipation on Miles York’s face vanished the moment he saw the scores. His expression instantly darkened, a flicker of anger in his eyes.
"Well? Aren’t her grades fantastic? I told you, Brooke is our biological daughter. Even without being raised by our side, without a high-end education, she has our genes. Her grades could never be bad."
"Could never be bad? Why don’t you take a look at her grades before you keep talking?"
Hearing the edge in Miles York’s voice, Alice Cole felt a flash of panic. ’Don’t tell me there’s something wrong with the scores!’
She quickly turned the phone back to look. When she saw that Brooke York’s scores were also in the eighties, her eyes widened in shock. "How is this possible? How could they have dropped so much?"
"Hmph," Miles York sneered. "And I actually believed you, thought her grades were so great. Isn’t this the same as Chloe’s? What’s the difference? Her total score is only two or three points higher than Chloe York’s."
"These results are wrong. The teacher must have made a mistake. They both have the surname York, so the scores must have gotten mixed up. Brooke’s scores should be in the nineties. I’m calling the teacher." Alice Cole moved to call the homeroom teacher.
"That’s enough. What’s the point of calling at this hour? If you ask me, something was off about Brooke earlier. Her mind isn’t on her studies; she’s off messing around with all sorts of nonsense."
Alice Cole lowered her phone, not making the call.
"Her rushing upstairs like that was a clear sign of a guilty conscience. You should spend more time managing her instead of just focusing on Chloe at school, thinking up ways to get at her."
Miles York got up and headed upstairs, ignoring Alice Cole completely.
Alice Cole raised her phone, zooming in on the scores. She looked again and again, but they were, without a doubt, Brooke York’s results. When she compared them with Chloe York’s, the final tallies were, in fact, only a few points apart.
"Chloe York must have cheated!" In the end, this was the conclusion Alice Cole reached.
