Chapter 99: Chloe York Scores Over 95 in Every Subject
Miles York had come out with a happy expression, but it soured the moment he saw Brooke York standing there alone.
"Chloe York, why isn’t she back?"
There was a hint of accusation in Miles York’s tone. Brooke had been smiling, thinking her father had come out to greet her. She hadn’t expected him to ask about Chloe.
"Chloe said she didn’t want to come back. She said she never wants to come back again, that this isn’t her home, and she..." Brooke trailed off, as if finding the words difficult to say.
"What else did she say?"
"She said she wouldn’t come back even if you begged her."
After speaking, Brooke saw the exact expression she wanted to see on Miles’s face: one full of rage.
Chloe York had never said any of that, but Brooke was the one relaying the message. She was free to twist it however she pleased.
’Oh, Chloe York, you can’t blame me for this. You don’t care about the York Family anyway, and you’re not coming back. You won’t mind whatever I say about you, right?’
"Are you sure that’s what she said?" Miles asked, his suspicious gaze falling on Brooke.
Brooke’s heart skipped a beat under his skeptical look, and she panicked. ’Did he see through my lie? Or did he and Chloe talk on the phone?’
"Miles, what is wrong with you? Can’t you believe what Brooke is saying? She’s your biological daughter, would she lie? Besides, Chloe York really doesn’t belong to this family. There’s nothing wrong with her saying that. It just shows she knows her place."
Alice Cole, who had followed them out, launched into a tirade. She was 100% certain Chloe would say something like that.
"Fine, I get it." Miles tossed the words over his shoulder and went back inside.
His behavior made it clear they hadn’t spoken. He had just been trying to trick her. Brooke felt a pang of displeasure. She couldn’t believe her father had just tried to bluff her.
"Brooke, don’t mind your father. You just need to remember that you are the one and only true young miss of the York Family. That Chloe York is a nobody." Alice Cole walked over to Brooke to comfort her.
Brooke nodded, inwardly gloating. ’After what I said today, Miles probably won’t keep chasing after someone who’s giving him the cold shoulder. He should realize that his own daughter is the most useful one, the one who will always be on his side, not Chloe York.’
After the third mock exam, the most important thing was the results. To get the students their scores as quickly as possible, the teachers stayed up all night grading the papers.
Chloe York, however, gave herself a small break. In reality, this just meant not studying for one evening—a luxury for her.
Scholar System: [Congratulations, Host. You have scored above 95 in every subject on the third mock exam. Reward: Wisdom Value +10, Memory Value +10.]
"Are the scores out already?" Chloe, who had just woken up, was still dazed by the Scholar System’s reward notification. ’The exam was just yesterday,’ she thought, ’so why am I getting a reward today? It’s barely past 6 AM!’
Scholar System: [Yes, Host. All of your exam papers have been graded. Last night, all the teachers at your school worked overtime through the night. They finished grading all the papers at 3 AM this morning.]
Chloe was quite shocked to hear this. ’So while we were all resting, the teachers were working overtime to grade our exams? Doesn’t that mean they had to work this weekend instead of taking a break?’
But that wasn’t her concern. Chloe got up to wash her face. She had to admit, her mind felt noticeably clearer.
After freshening up, she slung her backpack over her shoulder and headed out for breakfast.
She went to a breakfast shop in her residential complex, ordered a bowl of congee and some fried dough sticks, and started eating.
「The York Residence」
"Brooke, your third mock exam scores will be sent to the parents’ phones this afternoon, right?" Alice Cole asked as she peeled an egg and placed it in Brooke’s bowl.
"Yes, they’ll be sent out this afternoon. Then, when we get to school today, they’ll probably hand back the papers during class."
"So, what do you think you scored this time?" Miles York inquired.
He had thought it over last night. Alice was right about one thing: Brooke was his biological daughter.
Chloe might be helpful to him and liked by the Prescott Family, but she wasn’t truly on their side. She could only be used for short-term gain. In the long run, he had to rely on Brooke.
If Brooke could get into a good university, that would also bring him prestige.
"I think getting above 90 shouldn’t be a problem." Her previous scores in every subject had also been above 90, and she felt this mock exam had been quite easy. After all, she had spent so much time cramming before the exam; how could she not have made any progress?
"Even if you get over ninety, you still need to work harder. You should aim for over ninety-five in every subject."
Brooke nodded, but inwardly she was complaining about Miles. ’Easy for you to say. You look down on a 90 and demand over 95 in everything. Why don’t you go take the test? You’re all talk.’
"Brooke, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. As long as you’ve tried your best, that’s what counts. Whether it’s 90 or 95, anything over 90 is excellent." After saying this, Alice deliberately glanced at Miles.
Her eyes were filled with disapproval. ’He never paid any attention to Chloe’s meager scores before. Now Brooke’s results are already this good, and he’s still not satisfied, setting such a high bar for her. What a double standard.’
Knowing his words had upset Alice again, Miles didn’t say anything more and ate his breakfast in silence.
Brooke, however, had lost her appetite for breakfast. She couldn’t wait to get to school and have the teachers hand out the exams. She wanted to vent her frustration and put Chloe York in her place.
If Chloe’s scores went back to how they used to be—one point or a zero in every subject—Brooke had already planned out all the snide remarks she would make.
After finishing breakfast, Brooke rushed to school.
Meanwhile, the teachers’ office at school was buzzing with excitement.
"My god, Chloe York’s improvement is insane! She was getting scores in the 80s on the second mock, and now she’s getting over 95 in everything."
"Exactly! I’ve never seen a student improve this fast!"
"You don’t think her scores were so bad before because someone was holding her back? Look, back when she was still the young miss of the York Family, her score in every subject was either a zero or a one—mostly zeros. But after she was exposed as the fake heiress, her grades normalized and shot straight up. Meanwhile, the real heiress, Brooke York, also gets over 90 in every subject. It’s all very strange!"
"Right, I find it strange too. Could it be that the York Family knew all along that Chloe wasn’t the real heiress, so they suppressed her grades, waiting for their own daughter to come back and trample all over Chloe?"
