Chapter 146: Chloe York Moves Out
As she spoke, Chloe York’s finger moved to press down again. Alice Cole reached out to stop her, but with a single look from Chloe, she tightened her grip. Brooke York cried out, "Ow, that hurts!"
When Chloe York had tightened her grip, Brooke York felt the pain in her wrist shoot straight to the bone.
Her face was contorted in agony, and beads of cold sweat had even formed on her forehead.
Seeing this, Alice Cole didn’t dare make another rash move. She could only soften her tone and try to persuade Chloe York. "Chloe York, we can talk about this calmly. Why do you have to make things so difficult? You said it wasn’t you, so it wasn’t you. Isn’t that enough?"
Alice Cole was afraid Chloe York would actually call the police. If word of this got out, the company’s stock would likely plummet even further, and the online attacks against Brooke York would become even more vicious.
"What? After you wasted so much of my time and falsely accused me, you think we can just let this go with a simple ’it wasn’t me’?"
"Then what do you want?"
"Apologize to me!"
"In your dreams, Chloe York! You want us to apologize to you? What gives you the right?"
Brooke York couldn’t believe Chloe York actually expected them to apologize. The idea was preposterous.
"So you don’t want to apologize? Fine!" Chloe York tightened her grip while her other hand got ready to dial.
"It hurts! Chloe York, you bitch!" The pain was so intense that Brooke York couldn’t stop herself from lashing out.
Those two words made Chloe York’s grip tighten even more. Soon, Brooke York couldn’t even make a sound, which sent the nearby Alice Cole into a panic.
"Stop, don’t press it! Just don’t! We’ll apologize."
Brooke York was in too much pain to speak and could only shake her head. ’I won’t apologize. I refuse to apologize to Chloe York.’
"Looks like someone’s not willing!" Chloe York feigned tightening her grip again.
"No, no, no, she’s willing." Afraid Chloe York would apply more pressure, Alice Cole rushed over to Brooke York and urged, "Brooke, stop being so stubborn. Just apologize for now. We can live to fight another day."
Brooke York remained silent. ’I look so pathetic right now, so humiliated. I refuse to open my mouth and beg for mercy.’
Seeing Brooke’s resistance, Alice Cole had to step in. "Uh, Chloe, why don’t you let go of Brooke first? You two are sisters, after all. If you keep holding her like that, she’s in too much pain to even speak, let alone apologize to you!"
"You’re sure she’ll apologize?"
"Her silence means she agrees. You know what she’s like, don’t you? If she weren’t willing, she’d have shouted it by now, right? Let her go, and she’ll absolutely apologize."
After saying this, Alice Cole tensed up, afraid that Brooke York would suddenly cry out that she refused.
Fortunately, Brooke York remained perfectly still and silent, so it seemed she had agreed.
’I’ve taught Brooke York enough of a lesson anyway,’ Chloe thought, so she let her go. ’But if they’re trying to trick me and she doesn’t apologize, I’ll just grab her again.’
Once free, Brooke York wanted to rub her wrist to ease the pain, but the slightest movement was so agonizing that she didn’t dare move it at all.
She wanted to fly into a rage and curse Chloe York, but when she met her gaze, she lost her nerve.
"Go on, apologize."
"Hmph. Chloe York, you’re incredibly naive. After what you did to my daughter, you should be glad I’m not dealing with you. What, you still want to call the police? Do you have any proof? How did we slander you? The only real thing here is the injury you caused my daughter, and I’m here as a witness. Go on, call the police! I dare you!"
Alice Cole was gloating. If Chloe York hadn’t been holding her daughter down, she never would have softened her tone. ’Why would someone like Chloe York ever deserve to be treated with respect by me?’
"Is that so? I forgot to tell you, I was recording the entire time. I’ve recorded every word you said."
Brooke York and Alice Cole’s faces turned ugly. They hadn’t expected Chloe York to be recording. They had no choice but to apologize.
While they were apologizing, Chloe York pulled out her phone and started recording them, capturing the entire apology on video.
"Alright, now get lost." The two got into their car and drove off.
"What a foul mood," Chloe York muttered, dusting her hands off. It felt like the very air was tainted where the two of them had stood.
Just then, her driver arrived. Chloe York opened the trunk and placed her large bag inside.
She then went back upstairs to grab two more suitcases. As soon as she came down, she saw Miles York.
’What is with everyone today, coming one after another? Do they know I’m moving? Are they all here to see me off?’
"Chloe, are you moving out?" Seeing all of Chloe York’s packed belongings and the waiting car, Miles York immediately guessed she was leaving.
"I am."
"Where are you moving? Isn’t it nice living here? It’s close to home, so if you ever need help, I can be here right away!"
Miles York was really just trying to persuade Chloe York not to move.
"My school isn’t here, so why would I live here?"
That shut Miles York up. He didn’t know what else to say. ’Right, her school isn’t here. Of course she’s going to live near her university.’
"Chloe, there are good universities here, too. You could just attend one of them. It’s so inconvenient to be that far away."
Miles York wanted to keep trying to persuade her. ’If she leaves this city, she’ll probably never come back. After all, this place was never really her home, and my little golden goose will have slipped from my grasp.’
"I’ve already made my decision, so you don’t need to say anything more. Okay?"
After loading the two suitcases, Chloe York got ready to climb into the car.
Just as she went to shut the door, Miles York grabbed it, preventing her from closing it.
Chloe York frowned. She did not appreciate his actions at all.
As if he hadn’t noticed Chloe York’s annoyance, Miles York pressed on with his question. "Chloe, no matter what, I’m still your dad. Can you come back to visit me often in the future?"
Chloe York didn’t answer. ’In the memories of this body’s original owner, this father of hers was anything but conscientious.’
’He paid her almost no attention, and the only times he did were because he thought she was an embarrassment.’
’Even the matter of getting her into high school—he had berated her for a full hour, non-stop, before he finally pulled the strings to enroll her.’
’And that wasn’t for her sake, either. It was for the sake of his own pride.’
’Of course, she couldn’t possibly say no now. If she refused, he would just continue to hold her up here.’
"Fine, I promise."
"Really?" Miles York asked again, seeking confirmation.
Chloe York replied with resignation, "Yes, really."
"Alright, then. As long as you’ve promised, that’s all that matters. I won’t bother you regularly, don’t worry."
"Fine, I get it. Can you let go of the car door now? If I leave any later, I’ll arrive too late."
