Did Soldier really squat there all afternoon just because of what she said?

The more Aurelia Shaw thought about it, the guiltier she felt. When she was almost at Soldier’s side, her feet suddenly felt like they’d been filled with lead and froze in place. With Soldier’s round eyes staring at her intently, she was even more unable to move an inch.

Aurelia stared at Soldier’s expectant gaze, then braced herself and backed away. She could already imagine how disappointed the dog behind her would be, but she really couldn’t help it—she was scared of dogs, really scared, so scared it was off the charts.

Aurelia almost ran straight into Mama Rong.

"Oh my little ancestor, what’s with you? Rushing out in such a hurry and then running right back?" Mama Rong asked.

Aurelia suddenly grabbed Mama Rong’s hand, pressed her lips together, finding it a bit hard to say, "Mama Rong, help me chase Soldier away."

Mama Rong paused, glanced in Soldier’s direction, thinking the dog was blocking Young Madam’s way. But then on second thought, Young Madam had clearly been heading toward Soldier just now.

After thinking it through, Mama Rong instantly understood and covered her mouth with a laugh. "Alright, I’ll help Young Madam ’chase’ Soldier away."

Mama Rong went to shoo Soldier away, but Soldier circled around and excitedly dashed toward Aurelia instead. Aurelia’s hair stood on end on the spot, and she was so scared she kept shouting Mason Nightshade’s name.

Then she remembered Mason wasn’t at Nightshade Residence at the moment, and she reflexively barked, "Don’t you come any closer!"

Soldier immediately stopped where he was and let out a wronged little whine.

Aurelia let out a breath of relief. Suddenly, Soldier glanced behind her, his dark eyes lighting up, and he excitedly bolted forward again.

Aurelia’s scalp tingled; she instinctively cried Mason’s name as she ran forward. It was an unconscious reaction—every time she was "attacked" by Soldier, Mason would be standing in front of her, shielding her. The one who had saved her at her most dangerous moment was also Mason. It was practically a kind of fledgling imprinting; she felt that going back to the person who had first protected her was the safest place to be.

Even if that person wasn’t actually by her side at the moment.

A teasing chuckle sounded, and the next second an arm slid across Aurelia’s waist, pulling her into a firm chest. "Missed me that much?"

That voice...

Aurelia looked up and met Mason Nightshade’s mocking gaze. Her tense body unconsciously relaxed as she asked, "What are you doing here? Weren’t you in a meeting?"

"Didn’t I say I’d be home within an hour?" Mason lifted a brow.

Aurelia glanced at her watch. Not even half an hour had passed yet—where was this "one hour" coming from?

He’d obviously slacked off and skipped work again.

With him having skipped work at Nightshade Corporation on and off for the past six months, the company’s performance only kept going up instead of down. She had no idea how this man managed that.

"So the fearless Miss Shaw is actually afraid of dogs?" A playful voice chimed in. Grayson Quinn grinned smugly, looking as though he’d just discovered something earth-shattering.

Aurelia raised an eyebrow. She never thought being afraid of something was anything to be ashamed of, especially when...

"I’m a woman. Isn’t it perfectly normal for me to be scared?"

"Ohh, so you really are a woman!" Grayson put on a suddenly-enlightened expression.

Aurelia’s lips curled. "What? In Young Master Quinn’s eyes, am I so competent I get lumped in with the men? Or is it that your pride just can’t handle losing to a woman, so you have to call a woman a man to save face?

If that’s the case, I don’t mind if you start calling me big bro from now on."

"You..." Grayson was so choked he couldn’t get a word out. He pointed at Aurelia and went tattling to Mason, "Look at that tongue of hers, she’s poisoning people by the minute. You know what they say: you are who you hang around, if you’re around—"

"Around what?" Aurelia smiled at Grayson, who suddenly lost his nerve halfway through his sentence.
