"...Headmaster Glenn. For now, let us enter the assigned lodging."

"Hm? Yes, I suppose so. It has quite a luxurious atmosphere, yet for some reason I feel a tension hanging in the air. Am I imagining things?"

"I hope it is just your imagination."

With the guards watching, I gave a somewhat vague reply and turned back toward the building.

I gave a slight bow as I passed between the guards, went through the gate, and stood before the front entrance. I left the carriage inside the gate.

"...The front door appears to be made of metal as well. It looks rather thick."

When I muttered that, Glenn furrowed his brow and turned his face toward me.

"Somehow, I have a bad feeling about this. I wonder if they will lock us in."

As Glenn muttered that with a deeply uneasy look, the guards standing before the gate shot us a brief, sharp glance.

"Headmaster Glenn, it will be fine. If they imprisoned a marquis from another country, it would lead to war. We have nothing to hide, so let us hold our heads high."

"W-well, I suppose so... It is just that we did expel the prince from the academy, so I am a little uneasy..."

Glenn muttered that without much confidence, but the cause was ultimately the prince himself, so there was nothing for us to be blamed for.

"It will be fine. If they do lock us in, I will destroy the building."

I said that jokingly, but Glenn turned pale and shook his head.

"Th-that would be a problem... A-Aoi-kun, let us handle this peacefully..."

Seeing Glenn flustered, I realized I had failed at making a joke.

"It was a joke."

I answered with a smile and knocked on the door.

"I-it was a joke, right? Oh, what a relief..."

Glenn exaggeratedly placed a hand on his chest in relief. As I watched him from the corner of my eye, the door opened from the inside.

"Welcome, honored guests. We will attend to your needs during your stay here."

As the door opened, a low man's voice came from within. I saw a man dressed in a suit-like blue garment standing there, looking at us. He was likely a butler, perhaps in his fifties. With narrow, thread-like eyes and a fox-like smile, he gave a bow. Behind him, about ten women in black maid uniforms stood lined up with their heads lowered.

"Oh my, oh my... This is like being treated as nobility."

"You are a noble, Headmaster Glenn."

"Oh, come to think of it, I am."

Glenn cheerfully cracked a joke.

The butler let out a small laugh at that.

"Haha. Lord Glenn seems to enjoy jokes. Well then, allow me to show you to your rooms immediately."

Smoothly wrapping up, the butler gestured naturally toward the back of the building, and the maids split to the left and right, moving to the walls. With that, the view opened up and I could clearly see the interior.

It had been described simply as a two-story building, but the entrance floor appeared to have an open ceiling, making it quite tall. A wide, grand staircase stood directly ahead, leading up to the second floor. A chandelier hung from the ceiling, and large fabrics with beautiful patterns adorned the walls. Including the fact that the interior was more spacious than it had appeared from outside, it all gave off a very luxurious atmosphere.

"Your bedrooms are on the second floor. The second floor has five bedrooms and a sitting room. On the first floor, there is a dining hall, a bath, and restrooms, and we have also prepared two rooms for our staff. I will guide you to each later, so please do not hesitate to ask if you need anything."

After explaining that, the butler ascended the stairs first. Upon reaching the second-floor landing, the butler turned around again and spread both arms.

"Basically, for the convenience of our service, we guide gentlemen to the right side and ladies to the left side. This arrangement makes it easier for us to attend to you. Is that acceptable?"

The butler said that deferentially.

"Yes, that is fine."

I answered without giving it much thought, and Glenn let out a startled "Hyah!?"

"W-would it not be dangerous for me alone? Aoi-kun, I am just a frail old man, you know? I do plan to use barrier magic just in case, but I have a sliver of unease..."

"Headmaster Glenn. Have confidence. With your barrier magic, even the court magicians here could not break through it. I have never seen it, but still."

"I appreciate your faith in my magic even though you have never seen it, but right now I would have preferred you to worry about me a little more..."

At my words, Glenn slumped his shoulders in defeat.

Watching that, the butler laughed cheerfully.

"Haha. The two of you seem to have built a wonderful relationship. I envy that. Now then, I will go prepare your meal. Do you have any requests?"

Hearing that, nothing came to mind, so I decided to leave the menu to them.

"I am fine with anything."

"I would like some fish. And I prefer my bread soft."

"Understood."

Glenn happily made his meal requests. He seemed unexpectedly particular.

After watching the butler bow and descend the stairs, I lowered my tone and asked Glenn.

"...Headmaster Glenn. Are you not worried that they might poison us?"

"…………Oh."

When I asked, Glenn once again made a pitiful face with his brows drawn together in a figure-eight. However, he quickly perked up and shook his head.

"No, no. Poisoning a noble from another country would surely damage the prestige of a great power. Yes, that must be the case. So, I shall gratefully enjoy the delicious meal."

Glenn rattled off some dubious reasoning and nodded to himself. He must have been hungry. The fact that his desire for food outweighed his unease showed that he was not taking things as seriously as he claimed.

Well, from my perspective, I was just glad to finally have a moment to relax, so Glenn's optimistic nature was most welcome.

"Indeed. Then, let us go to our assigned bedrooms first and take a short rest before the meal."

"Yes, yes, let us do that. I wonder what the food will be. River fish would be nice, but sea fish would be good too."

Having become quite cheerful, Glenn walked off toward his bedroom with a light step. I smiled wryly at his back and headed for the bedroom right next to mine.

The door was made of dark-toned wood with a very pleasant design. All things considered, the streetscape of the Karvan Kingdom and the design of this building were calm and refined. Yet, for some reason, I felt a certain oppressiveness.

Wondering about that, I opened the door. It seemed they had prepared in advance upon hearing of our arrival, as lamps attached to the walls were already lit, brightly illuminating the room. The orange light casting its glow over various parts of the room created a rather fantastical atmosphere. The bed was large enough for two people to sleep comfortablyβ€”what one might call a queen-sized bed.

There was also a three-seater fabric sofa with exquisite embroidery.

"...Phew."

I sat down on the sofa with a soft thud and let out a breath. I must have been more tired than I realized, as I naturally leaned my weight against the backrest. Once settled, the thought of getting up felt rather tedious.

"Let us take it easy for a while."

After saying that aloud to decide, I relaxed my shoulders and pressed my head against the backrest. I stretched my limbs while still seated and gave a light stretch.

"...Mm."

When I relaxed again, I could feel myself unwinding more clearly than before. As I spent some time idly like that, I heard a knock at the door.

"Yes."

I answered as I stood up and opened the door.

The butler from earlier stood there. He gave a respectful bow and spoke.

"The meal is ready. Lord Glenn has already gone down to the first floor."

"Thank you."

I thanked him for the guidance and left the bedroom. Honestly, I wanted to take a bath first, but I asked myself whether that would be appropriate for a lady and decided against it.

Following the butler down the stairs, I found Glenn waiting for me on the first floor. However, his atmosphere was different from usual.

"...Headmaster Glenn? That outfit..."

When I asked, Glenn traced the collar of his clothes with both hands in a somewhat smug manner and smiled. Completely transformed from before, Glenn wore luxurious clothing befitting a noble. A pure white base with gold and silver embroidery, and he even carried a staff adorned with jewels.

As I stared intently at Glenn's appearance, he let out a light laugh and pointed to a maid standing at the back.

"I was tired, so I had them guide me to the bath first. And they had a perfect change of clothes ready. I must say, this is fine fabric. It feels wonderful."

Glenn spoke cheerfully. His attitude was the complete opposite of when we first arrived at the Karvan Kingdom's capital. There was not a trace of tension in him.

"How wonderful. I will have them guide me to the bath after the meal as well."

Envious of Glenn, I immediately said that and looked at the butler, who smiled and gave a slight bow.
