Chapter 202 - The King’s Arrival and the Senate’s Magic Display

Before the open doors stood the figure of an unfamiliar elf. This long-haired golden elf wore the same white robe as the Senate members, further adorned with a mantle embroidered in gold. Despite his expressionless face, he carried a strangely imposing presence. Four elves in silver armor accompanied him as he stepped into the hall and spoke.

"Fire is where I excel most... Is that not so?"

When the man said this, all elves present swiftly dropped to one knee and bowed their heads.

"Of course, Your Majesty. In this kingdom, no one surpasses Your Majesty in the art of fire magic."

When Edra said this, the man who was called His Majesty crossed his arms and tilted his head.

"Then I shall demonstrate my fire magic for you... Truly, you started something interesting without telling me a word."

Chuckling, he turned his gaze toward us.

"Visitors from another land. I am Rivett Founders Travel, the king who rules Aqua Vitae. I have heard from the captain of the guard there that you wield advanced magic beyond what even this kingdom can show... Truly interesting. I look forward to seeing it."

With that, Rivett, the king of the elf kingdom, crossed his arms and smiled.

Though he does not look elderly at all, did he really need to decide on a successor in such a hurry? He appeared to be no older than his forties. His expression and demeanor as he eagerly waited to see something interesting even exuded a childlike quality. Yet, it was surprising how his dignity and bearing as a king remained wholly intact.

Rivett's appearance instantly heightened the tension in the air. The Senate members straightened their postures, and the candidates also seemed to stiffen their expressions somewhat.

Only Owen maintained his unabashed attitude, but after seeing the other elves' reactions, Strasss, Eliza, and Shenley also appeared tense.

"Dean Glenn hasn't changed much, has he?"

I muttered as I looked at Glenn, but I could not read his thoughts from his figure as he stroked his beard with one hand while gazing at Rivett.

"Then, I shall show my magic first. Since I wield wind magic, please line up over here."

Edra said, taking the lead, and moved toward the far door. Passing through the door and stepping outside, we found the Senate members lined up along the outer wall of the building, with the candidates including Langs standing before them. Following their lead somewhat, we also lined up, and His Majesty stood in front of the door.

"Your Majesty. Please, have a seat."

"Indeed."

Turning to those voices, I saw elves who appeared to be royal guards carrying over a wooden chair and setting it down, and Rivett gave a magnanimous reply before sitting.

Once the spectators had assembled, Edra shifted his gaze as if surveying the vast sky. The sky stretched endlessly, with no obstructions or creatures like dragons flying through it.

Judging that there were no issues with using magic, Edra extended one hand forward and opened his mouth.

I still couldn't understand the elven language, but it had a soft, flowing resonance somewhat like French. Edra performed a long incantation — five measures, or as the elves would say, five cells, while gathering and manipulating magical power at his hand.

Here, I felt a slight unease once again. As with Solare, gathering wind should draw the surrounding air toward him. Without atmospheric flow, no wind can arise.

Yet, without affecting the surroundings at all, a small, dense whirlwind like a tiny tornado swirled at Edra's hand. Normally, wind should not be visible unless mixed with something, like a sandstorm or a tornado carrying moisture.

At Edra's hand, a faintly glowing whirlwind had formed. As I observed this mysterious aspect of elven magic, Edra, having completed his preparation, spoke the name of the spell.

I could not tell what he said, but I sensed an air clearly different from the incantation, so it must have been the spell's name.

As proof, the moment Edra uttered that single word, the whirlwind at his hand flew off into the sky. It grew larger and larger as if feeding on the wind, expanding until it grew large enough to engulf and obliterate the clouds floating in the sky. It was truly a tornado. Normally it would have extended down to the ground, but that tornado stopped growing at a certain size and vanished.

At that large-scale wind magic, Strass's eyes sparkled.

"Incredible..."

Perhaps hearing that murmur, several Senate members curled the corners of their mouths. Hedniz turned back to us smugly and spoke.

"Surely you haven't seen elven magic for the first time?"

When Hedniz said this, Edra, who had performed the magic, turned around and walked toward us.

"Do not act so proud about that. We have already been shown magic that we ourselves cannot use."

When Edra admonished him with a sigh, Hedniz fell silent, though with a dissatisfied look. Hedniz seemed determined to make us acknowledge that elves were the superior race.

I could demonstrate something in response to Edra's magic here, but I had no desire to engage in such childish behavior. I wanted to analyze and study elven magic one by one.

"Thank you very much. I have indeed witnessed elven wind magic. Then, what magic will you show us next?"

When I bowed to Edra and asked this, Edra and the Senate members blinked in surprise. Then, one elf, with a twitching expression, spoke.

"Not being fazed even after seeing that magic—truly, you are worthy of being the magician who revived lightning magic. Then, we shall show you earth magic next."

The elf said this and led the way to the entrance facing the valley that I had been told about earlier. When we actually stepped out onto the terrace, I saw a massive valley so deep that its bottom was invisible. I indeed heard the sound of a river flowing far below. The noise of large amounts of water falling from a height suggested there must be waterfalls as well.

The distance to the sheer cliff face opposite to us was considerable, yet despite its width, the valley floor was too dark to see—how high must this place be? Since I could not imagine having climbed to such a height from the elven kingdom at the mountain's base, this valley may have been formed by a fissure or some other geological event.

As I pondered this while looking down into the valley, the elf from earlier stepped forward and turned to face everyone.

"Earth magic primarily involves calling upon the spirits of the earth and borrowing their power to form something. A first-class earth mage can even construct buildings in an instant. Therefore, I shall demonstrate how large an object I can create quickly."

After explaining this carefully, the man began his incantation. It was similar in some ways to the wind magic incantation. There must be a fixed text, with certain words changing slightly each time.

The man used the phrase "calling upon the spirits." This may simply carry meanings of prayer through faith, but it was also possible that they truly borrowed external power to perform magic.

If so, did that mean that when elves used the same incantation and offered equivalent prayers, they could all perform magic of similar range and scale? If so, this would be far superior to human magic, which required various factors such as the amount of magical power, precise manipulation, and imagination stemming from understanding of magic.

Furthermore, if they could freely handle external power, they could realize not only previously inaccessible magic but even fantastical, unimagined forms of magic.

This was truly a supernatural power that science could not explain—the very essence of magic.

As I pondered elven magic, it seemed the incantation was complete. The man placed one hand on the ground and uttered a word that sounded like the spell's name.

Immediately, a rumbling and faint vibrations shook my body.

"This is..."

Eliza muttered something in astonishment.

As everyone watched the valley, I felt as though the edge of the terrace had changed shape, extending the floor deeper and deeper inward. The foothold stretched out like a living thing. Squinting to confirm, I saw that it was earth extending from beneath the terrace.

"...He is using part of the mountain."

Strass muttered, having reached the same understanding around the same time.

In other words, the wall that must have supported the underside of the terrace swelled upward, extending forward and further to expand the terrace's surface area.

The terrace extended by this earth stretched slowly but steadily, eventually forming a single great road across the vast, expansive valley.

It had stretched all the way to the opposite shore, creating a bridge.

"...Amazing."

Eliza murmured in awe.

Whether or not he heard that murmur, the elf who had demonstrated earth magic stood up and turned to face us.

"This earth bridge possesses considerable strength. Not only large carriages but even medium-sized magical beasts can cross it. However, the power of the earth spirits gradually fades, so it will become increasingly brittle. Eventually, it will collapse from around the middle of the bridge, completely crumbling within a few weeks. When constructing permanent structures, we use this magic to form the shape, then create a framework inside with wood magic, and finally coat the entire surface with clay made from white stone materials, thus completing it."

He gave this explanation.

It seemed the lingering magical power affected it—or rather, it was the spirits' power that faded. Either way, it appeared that earth magic alone could not produce permanent effects.

What concerned me was that because they used earth to build the bridge, natural bonding may fail, leading to gradual collapse. If they had built the bridge from stone or materials that could become building materials from the start, would it have been complete as is?

There were also other points of interest.

The mention of "clay made from white stone materials." This likely meant that the elves' white castle walls, townscapes, and royal castle resulted from applying clay made from that white stone.

The explanation suggested that if hardened, the strength would be maintained, which implied that this clay made from white stone materials might be classified as ancient concrete. Also known as Roman concrete; primitive concrete. This may be the mainstream building material in the elven kingdom.
