Chapter 146: One Thing Subdues Another
Evan Fairchild looked at Ian Monroe. "Who treated me like a bad guy and called the cops on me? Who told them to put me in handcuffs?"
Ian Monroe immediately explained, "You look like a bad guy! And I don’t know you!"
’He’s your dad!’
Seeing the two of them start to argue, Melody Monroe quickly said to Evan Fairchild, "I’m sorry, President Fairchild. Ian is only three. You’re in your thirties, aren’t you? As an adult, you could have easily explained the situation. Besides, if the cops knew who you were, they never would have put you in handcuffs."
"So, you’re blaming me?"
"Yeah! It’s your fault!" Ian Monroe said at once.
Evan Fairchild was struck speechless.
"How old did you just say I was?" Evan Fairchild asked Melody Monroe. ’I have to clear this up, or she’ll think I’m ancient!’
"Don’t tell me... you’re in your forties?" Melody Monroe asked tentatively.
Evan Fairchild nearly blew a gasket.
He glanced at the mother, then at the son.
’My chest hurts!’
Melody Monroe honestly didn’t know his age. The original novel had never specified it. In her mind, she’d pictured him in his late thirties, nearly forty.
’Rich people always take care of themselves, so they look younger. His skin is so good—that has to be why. Besides, he’s always so serious and brooding, not at all like a young man.’
"Get in." Evan Fairchild uttered two words and walked outside.
Puzzled, Melody Monroe followed him out.
A black Maybach was parked at the curb, and Tommy was respectfully holding the door open.
"President Fairchild, Miss Monroe."
Melody Monroe stood frozen in place, holding Ian. She had no idea where Evan Fairchild intended to take them.
"Mommy, don’t get in."
Melody Monroe patted Ian’s back, silently comforting him.
Evan Fairchild suddenly walked toward Melody Monroe, reaching for Ian.
"No!" Ian turned and threw his arms around his mother’s neck.
"President Fairchild, Ian is just a little boy. Please don’t frighten him," Melody Monroe said quickly.
Evan Fairchild looked at the mother-son pair.
’Still so formal... How distant is she trying to be?!’
’The little one got me arrested and handcuffed for hours, and the mother didn’t show a shred of concern. How did I suddenly become the bad guy here?!’
Melody Monroe was terrified Evan Fairchild would snatch Ian away!
"President Fairchild... I... Whatever is between us adults, let’s not drag a child into it."
’Even though Evan Fairchild knows Ian is his son now, because of me, he probably doesn’t like him very much, does he?’
Evan Fairchild took a deep breath, suppressing his anger. He put on what he hoped was a gentle expression, softened his voice, and asked, "Didn’t you say Ian was hungry? I’ll take you home."
"We..." Melody Monroe started to refuse, but her protest died when she met Evan Fairchild’s gaze. "Okay. Thank you, President Fairchild."
Evan Fairchild let out a long sigh of relief. He loosened his tie and the top button of his shirt... ’This whole situation is suffocating!’
"Mommy," Ian said, a little worried.
"It’s okay, Ian. Don’t be afraid," Melody Monroe whispered, comforting him as she got into the car with him in her arms.
Evan Fairchild sat down beside them.
The moment he sat down, the mother and son beside him immediately scooted over, trying to get as far away from him as possible.
There was now enough space between them to squeeze in another person!
Evan Fairchild turned his head and looked out the car window.
Tommy, sitting in the driver’s seat, started the car. ’For some reason, seeing the boss this furious doesn’t scare me at all. In fact, I’m kind of thrilled!’
’Everyone meets their match.’
’No, there are two people who can keep the boss in check!’
’I’ve finally figured out what’s going on.’
’The boss has a three-year-old son! And Miss Monroe is his mother! It was a bolt from the blue that left me completely shell-shocked.’
’Driving the boss and his family of three... it feels pretty great!’
