Chapter 329: Here’s My Household Register
Tommy froze. ’Exposed already?’
"Yes, Madam. The house in Jansburg is indeed in your name."
Melody gasped when she heard the news. "Tommy, how could you put my name on it? How dare you take matters into your own hands on something so important!"
"I didn’t act on my own, Madam. It was President Fairchild’s order."
"M-Mr... Mr. Fairchild?" Melody’s mind went blank, buzzing with confusion.
"Originally, Mr. Fairchild was going to buy it in your name alone, Madam. He only added his own name to the deed later," Tommy explained.
Melody hung up, her thoughts in a complete mess.
’Evan Fairchild wants to put the Jansburg house in my name?’ This felt even more like she was his kept woman.
Claire Walsh walked up and stood behind Melody. "Madam, shall we head back?"
"Let’s go back."
Melody had been so focused on calling Tommy that she hadn’t noticed Claire Walsh walking back into the sales office and buying the very unit Melody had been looking at—in full.
This was President Fairchild’s order.
When Melody returned to Evan Fairchild’s villa, Auntie Lana immediately came to greet her, taking the purse from her hand.
"Where are Mr. Fairchild and Ian?"
"Master Hale is studying, and Mr. Fairchild is in the study."
Melody headed upstairs. The study door was open, and standing at the entrance, she could see Evan Fairchild by the window.
He was on the phone. It seemed the person on the other end was doing all the talking, while Evan Fairchild just listened.
"Not coming back." Evan Fairchild hung up and set his phone aside.
On the other end of the line, Ethan Fairchild took a deep breath.
"How did I end up with a brother like this? Getting him to come home for a visit is harder than anything!"
"Look at you. You have a bad heart, and the doctor told you to get angry less. Do you really want to end up getting a stent?"
"Fine, I’ll get a stent! And I’ll tell everyone that the third son of the Fairchild Family angered his older brother so much he needed a heart stent! See if I can’t teach that little brat a lesson!"
...
Back in the study, Evan Fairchild was in a perfectly good mood.
"Did you finish looking at the house? Are you satisfied with it?"
"The house you bought in Jansburg... why did you put my name on it?"
Evan Fairchild rounded his desk and walked over to Melody.
His sudden proximity made it hard for Melody to breathe. She lowered her head, not daring to meet his burning gaze.
"Because it’s a gift I wanted to give you."
"Mr. Fairchild, the things you’ve given me are far too expensive. I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to tell you... I can’t accept that necklace, either. Please take it back. And the house in Jansburg—you absolutely cannot put it in my name."
"Why are you refusing?"
"I... I’m not... your kept woman..." Melody’s voice grew quieter as she spoke.
"When did I ever say I wanted to keep you?" Evan Fairchild walked to the side, pulled something from a drawer, and placed it in Melody’s hand.
Melody looked at the object, then looked up at Evan Fairchild in confusion.
’Why is he giving me his household registration book?’
"This is mine. Add yours, and we can become one. I never had any intention of keeping you. What I want is a lifetime. I want you to be my wife."
Melody stared at him, convinced that she must have been hearing things.
"If you’re willing, we can go register our marriage right now."
’He wants to marry me?’
’Is this... a marriage proposal?’
Melody could clearly hear the frantic beating of her own heart. She handed the booklet back to Evan Fairchild, turned, and ran out.
Evan Fairchild watched her retreating back, wanting to chase after her.
