Chapter 365 - 364: What Are You Trying to Do?
Melody Monroe’s heart tightened as she listened to him.
’What does he mean by that?’
’He’s not actually coming to the show to find me, is he?’
"I... I’m filming the show, I can’t get away," Melody Monroe stammered. "How about I come back as soon as filming is over?"
"No." Evan Fairchild propped an arm against the car window and watched the rows of streetlights flying backward.
"I’m on my way to Cragmore. I have a flight to Jansburg tonight, and then I’ll travel from there. I should arrive by morning." He was rushing through the night for her.
"Don’t come! Seriously, don’t come!" Melody Monroe was terrified.
"We’re dating openly and honestly. Why are we acting like we have to hide in the shadows?"
"Da... dating?"
"Aren’t we dating?" Evan Fairchild asked in return.
Melody Monroe: ’Are we? Didn’t I just latch onto his coattails?’
"Or do you think we need to hold a press conference to make things clear?"
"No! We don’t, we really don’t. We are... dating," Melody Monroe quickly agreed, following his lead.
’He’s acting a little strange today,’ she thought. ’And whatever he decides to do, I won’t be able to stop him. I’m really afraid he’s going to make our relationship public.’
Evan Fairchild, for his part, was already impatient. He wished he could announce it to the whole world right now.
He wanted to tie this woman up, take her home, and never let her leave his side again.
"How about I make time to meet with you? Lately, there have been some negative rumors... saying my sugar daddy bought out the entire production team just to make me famous. If you show up now, there’ll be no way for me to explain it away, right?"
"Hm," Evan Fairchild grunted softly.
Melody Monroe couldn’t tell if he had taken her words to heart or not.
’Does he agree with what I said or not?’
"Mr. Fairchild, I want to earn recognition through my own hard work, not by easily attaining fame and fortune because I have a powerful patron like you backing me. If that happens, all my efforts will be worthless. When people talk about me, they’ll just say I’m a kept woman. They’ll say, ’If it weren’t for her sugar daddy, would she have gotten where she is today?’"
"We are in a proper relationship," Evan Fairchild corrected her seriously.
"Yes, yes, we are dating, but other people won’t see it that way."
"Then let’s announce our relationship."
Melody Monroe: ...
’How did we circle all the way back to this again?’
"I’ll make time to be with you tomorrow night."
"Mm," Evan Fairchild nodded, seemingly satisfied.
Melody Monroe could tell he was in a decent mood, so she quickly added, "When you come to Cragmore, Mr. Fairchild, could I please ask you to be a little more low-key? It would be best if no one knew."
"Fine." Evan Fairchild finally nodded.
Melody Monroe let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"Then I’ll see you tomorrow."
"Wait. How do people in a relationship say goodbye?"
Melody Monroe: ...
She had never been in a relationship before. Single her whole life. How was she supposed to know how people in love say goodbye?
But as soon as she met Evan Fairchild’s gaze, her brain kicked into high gear.
’I’ve read countless romance novels,’ she thought. ’I should be able to pull out a trope or two!’
"Sweetheart, good night, muah muah."
Evan Fairchild frowned and shook his head. "Not like that."
Melody Monroe: ’Then like what? This is too hard!’
"Kiss me."
"Through the screen?" ’Mr. Fairchild, are you serious?’
But there was no way she could bring herself to do something like that!
