Chapter 199: The Fairchild Family Will Never Accept an Actor
’In the original story, Mrs. Fairchild publicly humiliated the original character.’
’A mere performer, dreaming of climbing the social ladder by clinging to the Fairchild family? The Fairchilds would never allow an actor into their home!’
"Why don’t you stay here tonight?" Evan Fairchild suddenly asked.
"I’ll ask Ian."
Ian had already overheard and immediately ran over to his parents. "Mom, can we please stay here? I like it here."
"Okay." Melody nodded.
"Go on and play," Evan Fairchild said, quickly shooing him away.
Ian dashed off into the distance again, like a happy little bird.
"Ian has changed a lot recently."
"Has he?" Evan Fairchild didn’t think he’d changed at all. ’Still the same little troublemaker.’
"He wasn’t as cheerful before, and he never used to speak up about what he wanted or liked."
"So, I get the credit for that?"
Melody smiled and nodded. "You get most of the credit."
Pleased by the compliment, Mr. Fairchild’s eyes crinkled with a smile. "Is there a reward?"
"What kind of reward?" Melody asked with a smile. "As long as it’s something I can give, it’s yours."
"In that case, let’s double those seven times."
Melody: "..."
Seeing her reaction, Evan Fairchild’s smile deepened.
A gentle breeze swept by, tousling the hair at her temples. Evan Fairchild reached out to tidy it for her, his hand resting by her ear, not moving away.
Melody felt a flicker of nervousness and instinctively drew back.
Evan Fairchild closed the distance in a single step. He shifted his grip, taking her chin in his hand and tilting her face up to his.
’He’s going to kiss me!’ Melody felt.
"Mom! There’s a big bird over here!"
Ian came running out of nowhere and froze the moment he saw his parents’ pose.
Melody quickly spun around, flustered. "Where’s the big bird? Mommy will go take a look with you."
"Okay!" Ian grabbed his mother’s hand and ran ahead.
Evan Fairchild stood rooted to the spot. Gusts of wind blew in his face, but they couldn’t cool the simmering frustration inside him!
’Kids are such a pain!’
’And another thing, couldn’t those two have at least called out to him?!’
’He’s a grown man! Is he really that easy to ignore?’
Melody was pulled along by Ian toward a bamboo grove. Inside, a few peacocks were unexpectedly strolling about, and they didn’t even shy away when Melody and Ian approached.
"These are peacocks."
"The kind that fan out their tails?"
"That’s right."
One of the peacocks suddenly walked toward Melody and Ian, shook its wings, and spread its tail. The beautiful feathers opened up like a huge fan.
"Whoa! It’s so beautiful! Mom, the peacock is fanning its tail!"
Melody couldn’t believe their luck—seeing a peacock fan its tail up close like this!
She immediately took out her phone and snapped a few pictures.
Suddenly, the peacock let out a cry and scurried to the side, as if something had startled it.
Evan Fairchild tossed aside a small pebble he was holding and walked over to them.
"Mr. Fairchild, you scared the peacock away as soon as you showed up!" Ian turned and complained to Evan Fairchild. "It was fanning its tail so perfectly! It was so beautiful!"
’This little brat,’ he thought. ’Was I not supposed to come over?’
’A peacock, daring to show off for *his* woman. We’re having peacock for dinner tonight! And it’ll be that exact one—the one that fanned its tail!’
"Sweetie, look! There’s another one up in the tree," Melody said, quickly distracting Ian.
Ian looked up into the tree and his excitement returned instantly.
"Mom, can we go look up ahead?"
"Of course!"
Melody let Ian pull her all around the estate, and by the time they returned to their room, the sun was about to set.
She discovered that the staff had prepared an antique-style suite for them. It contained a large bed in the main area and a smaller bed in an outer section. Although it was all technically one room, the layout provided excellent privacy.
