Chapter 514: A Mother’s Fury
"Even if the cops show up, they’ll arrest you first, you slut! Hand over the money now, or we’ll tear the roof right off this house!" the big guy who’d been trying to break down the door cursed viciously.
He’d been seething with anger for a while, but since Verna Golding hadn’t said anything, it wasn’t his place to step in. Now that his cousin had finally come home for help, he was determined to vent her frustrations for her. ’I’ll kill this stinking bitch!’
"Give us the money!"
Her other cousins roared ferociously, all of them burning with the same rage. They couldn’t wait to kill that stinking bitch, Phoenix Golding.
"I don’t have it! You can kill me, but I still don’t have the money!"
Phoenix Golding simply flopped back onto her pillow, pressing down hard. ’This twenty yuan is my lifeline. I’m not giving it up, no matter what.’
"I’ll kill you right now!"
Verna Golding, who had been silent the whole time, suddenly lunged forward. She yanked Phoenix Golding up and dragged her onto the floor. The sleeping mat came down with her, as did the pillow and blanket. A stack of bills scattered everywhere.
Phoenix Golding scrambled to gather the cash, but the bills were strewn everywhere—one here, another there. She wasn’t as fast as the others. Verna Golding kicked her aside and started snatching up the money. The others gave her the bills they collected.
It came to nineteen yuan in total, one short.
"Hand over the last yuan!"
Verna Golding grabbed Phoenix Golding by the collar. All her previous meekness was gone, replaced by a powerful, murderous aura.
All that can be said is this: never provoke a mother protecting her child. No matter how timid or mild-mannered she may be, she will fight to the death for her children.
Verna Golding’s entire world revolved around Clayton Xavier. She didn’t care what hardships she had to endure, but she would not allow her son to suffer the slightest injustice. If he did, she would fight to the death. The people of Xavier Village had witnessed this long ago; no one dared to cross Clayton Xavier, and they forbade their own children from doing so as well.
A gentle person’s wrath is more terrifying than a wolf’s.
"That’s my money! Give it back..."
Phoenix Golding struggled desperately, trying to snatch the money back, but she was completely immobile in Verna Golding’s iron grip.
"I never gave a damn about your filthy affair with Storm Xavier. That animal isn’t even human. You want him? You can have him. I couldn’t care less. I don’t even care that you gave birth to that mutt. Phoenix Golding, did you really think I ignored your disgusting behavior because I was afraid of you? I just couldn’t be bothered. But you crossed a line. You should never, ever have gone after my son’s tuition money. You want to die? I’ll be happy to oblige!"
Verna Golding stuffed the money into her pocket and rained down punches on Phoenix Golding, beating her senseless. The wounds that had only just begun to heal split open again, now joined by a host of new ones.
But Verna Golding didn’t stop. How could a few punches ever make up for more than ten years of pent-up rage?
She said she didn’t care, but how could that be true?
She had only given up on Storm Xavier in recent years. Before that, she had still held out hope that he would change his ways and settle down to live a proper life with her. It wouldn’t have mattered if he couldn’t earn work points; she would have supported the family, as long as Storm Xavier stayed home and kept out of trouble.
But he couldn’t even grant her that meager hope. Storm Xavier and Phoenix Golding’s behavior grew more and more shameless, and they even had that little bastard. That was when Verna Golding’s heart finally died. But only today was she able to unleash her rage. She felt like she could beat Phoenix Golding to death.
"Verna, stop hitting her!"
Magnus Golding tried to pull his daughter away, afraid she would actually kill someone. Phoenix Golding was sprawled motionless on the floor. It didn’t look good.
"Let Verna beat her! If she dies, we’ll just throw her on the mountain for the wolves. That stinking bitch has disgraced the Golding family name. She’s better off dead," one of the cousins said hatefully.
Shockingly, none of the other Goldings objected. They were all hoping Verna would beat the stinking bitch to death. ’Her living was a disgrace to the Golding family; it would be better if she were dead!’
